Heterocharax macrolepis was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912, from material collected at Rockstone, Guyana, on the Essequibo River. It is placed in the subfamily Heterocharacinae within Acestrorhynchidae, the pike-characin family — a family better known in the hobby for the much larger, elongate Acestrorhynchus species, alongside which H. macrolepis looks like a completely different kind of fish despite the shared lineage.
The genus Heterocharax itself is small and poorly known outside specialist ichthyological literature, and species-level identification within it rests on details of scalation, fin-ray counts and the absence of a dark pigment band above the anal-fin base, distinguishing H. macrolepis from close relatives. The valid combination for this species is unchanged since its original description; no synonymy or generic transfer affecting the name is noted in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
Heterocharax macrolepis is a small, laterally compressed characin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of just 2 in — a genuinely diminutive fish, and far smaller than the payara, barracuda and pike characins that dominate the popular image of "predatory characins." As the species name macrolepis ("large-scaled") suggests, it carries conspicuously large scales relative to its body size, a useful field character within the genus.
The head carries a small, slightly upturned mouth with a prognathous (protruding) lower jaw, an adaptation for snapping small prey items from above or ahead rather than the fang-lined, gape-and-grab jaws of its larger relatives. It lacks the dark pigment band dorsal to the anal-fin base seen in some congeners, a detail used to separate it from similar species in the genus. Overall body form is slender and streamlined, consistent with a fish that hunts by short, quick pursuit in open water rather than by ambush from cover.
Habitat
The species has a fairly wide distribution across northern South America: the Essequibo and Demerara river basins of Guyana, the Amazon basin (recorded from tributaries between the Tapajós and Tefé), and the Orinoco basin, spanning Guyana, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. Within that range it is specifically associated with igarapés — the small, often shaded forest streams that thread through Amazonian and Guianan lowland rainforest — where it occupies mid-water as a diurnal, actively swimming predator rather than a bottom- or surface-oriented species.
Water in these habitats is warm and tropical; one source reports a temperature range of roughly 75–82 °F for the species, consistent with the broader igarapé environment of clear-to-tea-stained, soft, acidic blackwater interspersed with clearer stretches. Specific pH and hardness data for this species were not found in the sources reviewed here, and none should be assumed beyond the general igarapé pattern.
Feeding
Heterocharax macrolepis is a predatory, fish-eating characin — its upturned mouth and jaw structure point to a diet of small fish and likely aquatic invertebrates taken in mid-water, in keeping with the diurnal hunting behaviour recorded for the species. No detailed stomach-content study was found in the sources consulted, so the specific proportions of its diet in the wild are not documented here.
Because the species is only very rarely kept, aquarium feeding accounts are essentially absent from the available sources. Heterocharax macrolepis is very rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and is maintained, when at all, only by knowledgeable specialist and biotope aquarists working from wild-collected igarapé stock — this is not a species available through ordinary retail channels. Its small adult size (under 2 in) makes it far more tractable than the large predatory characins that dominate this group's reputation, but it should not be assumed easy: as an active, diurnal predator it likely needs a well-planted or structured biotope tank with open swimming space, warm water in the mid-to-upper 20s °C, and tankmates too large to be viewed as prey while being unlikely to bully a small, unfamiliar species.
One source lists the species' care difficulty as beginner-friendly, but flags that its underlying data are incomplete; given the predatory habits, small size and near-total absence of hobbyist experience reports, this article treats that beginner rating with caution rather than repeating it as settled fact.
