Melanocharacidium blennioides is a small, bottom-perching characin from the Essequibo River basin and coastal streams of the Guianas, a member of the darter-characin family Crenuchidae that lives up to its common name by resting propped on its pectoral and pelvic fins against the substrate and darting in short bursts rather than swimming continuously in open water. It rarely tops 2 in and is easy to mistake for a small goby at a glance, but the resemblance is purely behavioural convergence — this is a true characin with a reduced swim bladder, adapted to hold station in flowing water. Taxonomy & naming

It sits in the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters, including the sailfin characins Crenuchus and Poecilocharax as well as the stream-bed darters of Characidium and its allies — within the order Characiformes. The genus Melanocharacidium was erected to hold a group of darter characins distinguished from Characidium proper by details of squamation and colour pattern; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid combination Melanocharacidium blennioides (Eigenmann, 1909).

The species epithet "blennioides" ("blenny-like") reflects the same visual impression that gives the whole darter-characid group its common name: a small, elongate fish that perches and darts along the substrate in a goby- or blenny-like manner rather than swimming in open water. This is convergent behaviour rather than relationship — blennies are a wholly unrelated marine and brackish lineage — but the name has stuck as an apt descriptor of how the fish actually moves and holds station.
