Characidium pellucidum is a small, slender darter characin from the Essequibo and Maroni basins of the Guianas and adjacent Amazon drainages, sold in the trade as the crystal clear tetra or darter tetra. Its species name pellucidum, Latin for "transparent", describes a fish built nothing like the shoaling, mid-water tetras most aquarists picture: it is a bottom-perching micro-predator that rests propped on its pelvic and anal fins over sand or leaf litter and darts in short bursts between ambushes, much like a true freshwater darter. Biology in the wild is poorly documented, but the aquarium literature is consistent on the essentials — this is a hardy, easy-to-overlook nano fish that wants small live or frozen foods, gentle current, and a sand or fine-gravel floor rather than open swimming space. Treated as a benthic specialist instead of a schooling tetra, it is a rewarding, honest little fish for a quiet nano or biotope tank.

Characidium pellucidum was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909, from material collected on Gluck Island in Guyana's Essequibo River. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters and sailfin characins — within the order Characiformes, and specifically to the subfamily Characidiinae, the true darters, which are distinguished from their showier Crenuchinae relatives (such as the sailfin characin, Crenuchus spilurus) by a slim, cylindrical body and a bottom-perching rather than mid-water lifestyle.

The genus Characidium is large and taxonomically difficult, with many superficially similar species distinguished by fine details of squamation, fin-ray counts and colour pattern rather than obvious external differences, and Characidium pellucidum is no exception — field identification within the genus is unreliable without close examination. The specific epithet pellucidum is Latin for "transparent" or "clear", a reference to the fish's pale, translucent live colouration, and it is the basis of the trade name "crystal clear tetra", even though the species is not a true tetra (Characidae) at all but a darter in the separate family Crenuchidae.

Morphology

Characidium pellucidum is a small, elongate, laterally compressed fish reaching a modest maximum of about 1.5 in standard length, among the smaller members of a genus that is itself made up mostly of nano-sized species.
