Taxonomy & naming
Hoplias microlepis was described by Albert Günther in 1864, originally as Macrodon microlepis, before later authors placed it in Hoplias, the trahira genus within the family Erythrinidae (order Characiformes). The genus name Hoplias derives from the Greek hoplon, "weapon" or "armour," a nod to the heavy, armoured-looking body and formidable dentition shared across the group; the species epithet microlepis (Greek micro-, small, and lepis, scale) refers to the comparatively small scales that distinguish it from its larger congeners.
Hoplias is a small but taxonomically contested genus of Neotropical wolf fish, with several nominal species — H. malabaricus in particular — long suspected of concealing further cryptic diversity. H. microlepis is the smallest described species in the genus and is geographically distinct from most of its relatives, being restricted to Pacific-slope drainages of Central and northwestern South America rather than the Amazon or Orinoco systems where other Hoplias predominate.
Morphology
Hoplias microlepis has the classic trahira build: a thick, cylindrical, almost torpedo-shaped body, a broad flattened head, and a large mouth armed with heavy conical teeth suited to gripping and piercing prey rather than shearing it. FishBase records a maximum size of 14 in standard length (about 19.5 in total length), which makes it distinctly the smallest member of Hoplias — a genus that includes species such as H. aimara exceeding a metre — though it remains a substantial, powerfully built predator by any ordinary aquarium standard.
As in other Hoplias, the body is covered in relatively small, tough scales (reflected in the species name), and the dorsal and adipose fins sit well back toward a robust caudal peduncle built for a short, explosive strike rather than sustained cruising. Colouration in wild specimens tends toward mottled olive, brown and grey tones that blend into sand and mud substrate, consistent with its life as a stationary ambush predator.
Habitat
The species occurs in Pacific-drainage rivers, creeks and swamps of Panama (type locality: Río Chagres), Costa Rica (Puntarenas province), Colombia, Ecuador (Río Guayas) and Peru (Río Tumbes), typically at low elevations of roughly 20–40 metres. It favours sand-and-mud-bottomed stretches of slow to moderate current, where it lies still against the substrate or amid cover, relying on camouflage and a burst strike rather than active pursuit to take prey.
Water across this range is tropical and warm, broadly in the 79–82 °F range reported by FishBase; detailed pH and hardness data are not well documented for this species specifically, but as with other Hoplias it is tolerant of variable, often poorly oxygenated water, an adaptation underpinned by its ability to breathe air. Precise breeding-season and hardness figures are data sparse for this species.
Feeding
Hoplias microlepis is unambiguously piscivorous, hunting fish as its primary prey via ambush from cover or open substrate. Like other trahiras it likely also takes crustaceans and other aquatic prey opportunistically, but fish form the core of the diet reported for the genus and confirmed for this species by FishBase.
In the aquarium, this translates to a strict meaty diet: whole fish, prawn and other substantial protein sources. Trahiras are notorious for resisting or ignoring dry and flake foods entirely, and any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth should be assumed to be food rather than company.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour for Hoplias microlepis is not documented in the sources reviewed here. Across the genus Hoplias, several species are known to pair off and establish a nest site — a cleared pit in the substrate or a patch cleared amid roots or vegetation — ahead of spawning, with the male taking on guard duties once eggs are laid. Whether H. microlepis follows this same pattern specifically has not been confirmed in the available literature; treat the genus-level pattern as a plausible but unverified guide for this species.
Breeding
No dedicated aquarium or field account of Hoplias microlepis breeding was found in the sources reviewed for this article. Several Hoplias and related Erythrinidae are documented substrate nest-spawners in which the male guards a pit or plant nest and the resulting fry, but captive breeding across the genus is rare, and there is no confirmed record of H. microlepis being bred in aquaria. Prospective keepers should treat this as a wild-collected, essentially unbred aquarium fish rather than expect to reproduce it at home.
In the aquarium
Hoplias microlepis is a specialist's fish, not a community one. Hobbyist reports describe it as more aggressive than the more commonly kept H. malabaricus, and it is uniformly recommended as a single specimen in a dedicated aquarium — a minimum volume around 1,0.5 US gal is cited by aquarists for an adult fish of this build. As an ambush predator with a genuinely powerful bite, it should never be housed with fish small enough to be swallowed, and even larger tankmates risk injury from an unprovoked strike.
Being an air-breather tolerant of lower dissolved oxygen, it is not a demanding fish in terms of water chemistry, but it needs strong filtration for its heavy bioload from a meaty diet, secure tank furnishings it cannot dislodge, and a very securely fitted lid — trahiras are powerful enough to jump. This is a long-term, large-footprint predator-keeping project, not a starter fish, and its size and temperament rule it out for the vast majority of home aquaria.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hoplias microlepis as Least Concern in April 2019, reflecting a wide distribution across Pacific-slope drainages of five countries and a lack of evidence for significant population decline. The species is commercially fished across parts of its range, but this pressure has not been sufficient to raise conservation concern to date.
As with many Neotropical freshwater fish, longer-term pressures on its Pacific-drainage habitat — including water development, deforestation and land-use change in Central America and northwestern South America — are relevant background factors even though the species itself is not currently considered at risk.
