Taxonomy & naming
Hoplias misionera was formally described in 2016 by Rosso, Mabragaña, González-Castro, Delpiani, Avigliano, Schenone and Díaz de Astarloa in the journal Cybium (40(3):199–208), carved out of the long-standing Hoplias malabaricus complex — a species long suspected by ichthyologists to actually comprise several cryptic species across South America. The type locality is the lower Paraná River in Misiones Province, Argentina, and the specific epithet honours that province.
The species is distinguished from H. malabaricus by a unique Y-shaped margin on the dentary (lower jaw) bone, along with differences in fin-ray and scale counts: 14–16 dorsal rays versus 14 in H. malabaricus, 12–14 pectoral rays versus 11, and 40–43 lateral-line scales versus 38–39. It belongs to the family Erythrinidae — the trahiras or wolf fishes — within the order Characiformes, a family of robust, predatory, facultative air-breathing characins found only in South America. A subsequent integrative-taxonomy study using morphology, DNA barcoding and cytogenetics reported a disjunct distribution for the species, with a first record in the Amazon basin in addition to its original La Plata basin range, suggesting H. misionera may be more widely distributed than the original description indicated. As with many recently split Hoplias lineages, older literature and databases predating 2016 will still lump this species under H. malabaricus.
Morphology
Hoplias misionera shares the unmistakable trahira body plan: a thick-set, cylindrical, only mildly compressed body, a broad flattened head, and a large mouth armed with heavy, conical, dagger-like teeth built for gripping and holding prey rather than shearing it. The most reliable way to distinguish it from its close relative H. malabaricus is internal — the Y-shaped dentary margin identified in the original description — though the elevated fin-ray and scale counts (14–16 dorsal rays, 12–14 pectoral rays, 40–43 lateral-line scales) offer external clues to a trained eye.
Published maximum-size data specific to H. misionera was not located in available sources. Other Hoplias species vary enormously by taxon — some Erythrinus and Hoplerythrinus relatives stay under 8 in, while large Hoplias such as H. aimara exceed a metre — so no size figure should be assumed for this species without confirmation; treat it as data sparse and expect a substantial, heavy-bodied adult typical of the genus.
Habitat
Hoplias misionera is native to the subtropical Paraná–Paraguay–Uruguay river system of Argentina, with its type locality in the lower Paraná River in Misiones Province — a region of warm-temperate to subtropical climate, distinctly cooler on average than the equatorial Amazon basin. A later molecular survey additionally reported the species, or a very closely related lineage, in the Amazon basin, pointing to a disjunct range that spans both subtropical and tropical South American drainages.
As a trahira, it is expected to favour the sluggish, structurally complex habitats typical of the genus — backwaters, flooded margins, and dense cover of submerged wood and vegetation — where it can lie in ambush. Like other Erythrinidae, Hoplias are facultative air-breathers, tolerating the low-oxygen conditions of stagnant floodplain water that many other fish cannot. Specific water chemistry data (pH, hardness, precise temperature range) for H. misionera was not found in available sources; keepers and researchers should note that its more southerly, subtropical Paraná origin likely means cooler seasonal temperatures than tropical Hoplias populations, rather than assuming the warmer regime typical of Amazonian wolf fish.
Feeding
Hoplias misionera is a piscivorous ambush predator, consistent with every member of its genus: it lies motionless in cover and strikes at passing fish and other prey with a sudden lunge, rather than pursuing prey in open water. Genus-wide, documented Hoplias diets include fish, crustaceans, mussels and other invertebrates, and in captivity relatives are fed fish, prawn, mussel and similar meaty foods; they characteristically resist and often refuse dry, manufactured food entirely.
No species-specific dietary study for H. misionera was located, but its ambush morphology and family membership make an exclusively meaty, live-or-fresh-fish-and-crustacean diet the safe assumption. Any tankmate small enough to be engulfed by that large mouth should be considered prey rather than company.
Mating
No courtship or pairing behaviour specific to Hoplias misionera was found in available sources. In wolf fish generally, spawning is preceded by a male establishing and defending a nest site — typically a cleared pit in the substrate or a patch among plants — and pairing with a female over that site; whether this pattern has been documented for H. misionera specifically is unconfirmed, and the species should be treated as data sparse on this point rather than assumed to follow the pattern exactly.
Breeding
Breeding data specific to Hoplias misionera was not located in available sources. Several Hoplias and related Erythrinus species are documented substrate nest-spawners: the male digs a pit in the substrate, the female deposits a large clutch — cited elsewhere in the genus at anywhere from roughly 2,000 to 10,000 yellowish eggs — and the male alone guards the nest and the resulting fry, driving off intruders. Reported breeding conditions for genus relatives cluster around roughly 79 °F and pH 6–7.5, though these figures come from general Hoplias literature (closely related to the H. malabaricus complex) rather than from H. misionera itself and should be applied with caution.
H. misionera has not been documented as an established aquarium-bred species in the sources reviewed here; as with most wolf fish, captive breeding of this specific taxon should be considered rare to unrecorded rather than assumed achievable.
In the aquarium
Hoplias misionera is not a community fish and should not be treated as one. As a trahira, it is a solitary predator that will attack and attempt to eat any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth, and its heavy conical teeth and powerful bite make careless handling genuinely risky — this is a specialist's fish, kept alone in a large, heavily filtered tank sized for a substantial, thick-bodied predator, not a community or show aquarium. Because confirmed adult-size data for this particular species was not found, keepers should plan for a large, long-lived predator on the assumption that it will need considerably more space than its juvenile size suggests, in keeping with its genus.
Dense cover — driftwood, roots, robust plants — lets the fish express its natural ambush behaviour and reduces stress, and as a facultative air-breather it will make regular trips to the surface, so a lid is essential to prevent escape. Feed only appropriately sized meaty foods (fish, prawn, mussel); this species is unlikely to accept dry food. Given how recently it was described and how little is documented about it in captivity, prospective keepers should treat husbandry parameters as provisional, based on the wider Hoplias/H. malabaricus-complex literature, rather than established for this species specifically.
Conservation
Hoplias misionera has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; no assessment was located in available sources, consistent with its status as a species described only in 2016. It is therefore listed here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a status inferred from relatives.
As a subtropical Paraná-basin endemic (with a possible additional Amazon-basin presence reported by molecular work), any conservation picture for the species would need to weigh the same pressures facing La Plata-basin fish generally — damming, water-quality change and fisheries pressure — but no species-specific population or threat data was found.
