Taxonomy & naming
Hydrolycus armatus was described by the Scottish naturalist William Jardine in 1841. It belongs to the family Cynodontidae — historically often folded into Characidae, but recognised as its own family in modern classifications — within the subfamily Cynodontinae, alongside the related genera Cynodon and Rhaphiodon. A phylogenetic revision of the Cynodontinae confirms Hydrolycus as a distinct, valid genus, and there are no valid historical records of this species under a "Cynodon armatus" or "Rhaphiodon armatus" combination — it has consistently stood as Hydrolycus armatus since Jardine's description.
The genus Hydrolycus currently holds several recognised species (including H. scomberoides and H. tatauaia), all sharing the same basic "payara" body plan and fang arrangement, and field identification between them can be difficult without close examination of dentition and proportions. The common names "payara" (used across much of its South American range) and "vampire fish" or "vampire tetra" (used in the aquarium trade) both refer to the same striking lower-jaw fangs described below.
Morphology
The payara has an elongated, laterally compressed, streamlined body built for sustained fast swimming, with a deeply forked tail, a small adipose fin typical of characins, and large eyes suited to hunting in open water. Its most famous feature is the pair of greatly elongated fangs on the lower jaw, which can reach several centimetres in length; when the mouth closes, these fangs pass through corresponding sockets in the upper jaw and skull rather than being hidden inside the mouth. The rest of the jaw carries additional smaller sharp teeth adapted for gripping slippery, fast-moving prey.
FishBase records a maximum length of roughly 35–37.5 in total length for the species, with unverified reports of individuals exceeding a metre in Brazilian waters; SeriouslyFish gives a more conservative maximum of around 26 in TL for aquarium-relevant specimens. Either figure describes a large, powerful fish — this is not a species that stays small, and any account of the payara that quotes only the low end of that range is giving an incomplete picture. Colouration is countershaded silver with a faint metallic sheen, unremarkable next to the dramatic dentition, which is the fish's real calling card.
Habitat
Hydrolycus armatus is native to tropical South America, recorded across the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraná-Paraguay river systems. It is a fish of open water in large river channels rather than still backwaters — a pursuit predator that relies on speed and space, typically found in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated stretches of major rivers rather than dense vegetation or confined pools.
SeriouslyFish reports a temperature range of roughly 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–8.0, and hardness from soft to moderately hard (roughly 36–268 ppm), reflecting the range of conditions across its wide native distribution rather than a narrow blackwater specialism. High dissolved oxygen and strong water movement are recurring themes in accounts of the species, consistent with its life as an active, fast-swimming predator of large river channels rather than sluggish floodplain water.
Feeding
The payara is an obligate piscivore — FishBase describes it as capable of taking prey up to roughly half its own body length, using its fangs to impale and hold fast-moving fish rather than to shear flesh the way a piranha's teeth do. In the wild it is a pursuit predator of open water, running down other fish in fast currents rather than ambushing from cover.
In the aquarium, payara generally prefer live fish, especially as new arrivals, though some individuals can be weaned onto dead whole fish or strips of fish flesh with patience. Keepers are specifically cautioned against feeding exclusively live feeder fish, which carries disease risk, and against offering mammalian or avian meat, which is nutritionally inappropriate for a fish-eating specialist. Because of its size and predatory nature, any tankmate that fits in its mouth should be assumed to be food.
Mating
Little is documented about courtship behaviour in Hydrolycus armatus specifically. SeriouslyFish notes that wild payara undertake an upstream spawning migration between roughly November and April, timed to the seasonal rise of South American rivers — a pattern typical of large-river characins that spawn in open water rather than on a defended nest site. No reliable external sexual dimorphism has been documented for the species, and sexes cannot be reliably distinguished by colour or body shape from available accounts.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Hydrolycus armatus is not established. SeriouslyFish is explicit on this point: reproduction has not been achieved or documented in aquaria, and everything known about spawning comes from field observation of the wild upstream migration described above. As a large-river, open-water spawner that needs long-distance migration cues, tank space and river-scale flow to trigger reproduction, it sits with the other big-river characins in this atlas — the payara, dorado and flannelmouth migrators — that are simply not home-breeding prospects. Any aquarium payara in the trade is wild-caught or, where farmed at all, produced through hormone-assisted hatchery techniques rather than natural pair spawning in captivity; the cache used for this article does not document commercial-scale propagation for this species, so none is claimed here.
In the aquarium
Hydrolycus armatus is a difficult, specialist fish, and SeriouslyFish states plainly that it "probably should not be considered a home aquarium subject" given its adult size and natural behaviour. SeriouslyFish recommends 300 or more gallons for a single adult, with strong water movement and high oxygenation to mimic the fast river channels it evolved for; a fish that can approach or exceed a metre in length needs swimming room that few home tanks can provide, and this is fundamentally a public-aquarium-scale animal.
The species is described as aggressive, particularly toward conspecifics and similarly shaped fish, and is generally best kept alone or alongside large, dissimilar tankmates such as Potamotrygon stingrays that will not be read as competitors or prey. Its skin and fang arrangement make it delicate to handle and prone to injury against tank glass or hard decor, and it is a noted prodigious jumper, so a secure, weighted lid is essential — an uncovered payara tank is an almost guaranteed loss. Given the combination of size, specialised live-food requirements, aggression and jumping risk, this is a fish for experienced keepers with genuinely oversized systems, not a general community or first-predator choice.
Conservation
Hydrolycus armatus has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List at the time of writing — it is coded Not Evaluated (NE) here rather than assigned a status inferred from incomplete records. Both FishBase and SeriouslyFish list the species' regional data as Data Deficient in places, reflecting how little population-level information exists for a wide-ranging, open-water predator of major South American rivers that is not a major target of directed fisheries or a well-studied fish outside occasional trade and taxonomic literature.
As a species spread across the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraná-Paraguay systems, its long-term outlook is tied to the broader pressures facing those basins — damming that interrupts the upstream spawning migrations it depends on, and water-quality change linked to deforestation and development. Because a formal assessment has not been completed, no specific conservation status or trend can be claimed for this species beyond noting that these basin-scale pressures are relevant watch items.
