Ichthyborus quadrilineatus was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1904. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae, a strictly African characin family that also contains the plant-grazing Distichodus, and sits within the small genus Ichthyborus alongside a handful of other specialised fin- and scale-feeders. The genus name comes from the Greek ichthys (fish) and bora/-borus (devouring), i.e. "fish-devourer" — an apt label for an animal that targets the fins and scales of other fish rather than whole prey.
The species epithet quadrilineatus ("four-lined") refers to the longitudinal stripe pattern along the flanks. Ichthyborus and its relative Phago are frequently discussed together in the ichthyological literature on pterygophagy (fin-eating), a specialised feeding strategy documented in a handful of African and South American lineages independently.
Morphology
Ichthyborus quadrilineatus reaches a maximum recorded length of 8 in standard length, a moderate size for the genus. As in other pterygophagous distichodontids, the mouth and jaw are adapted for quick, precise strikes at the fins and scales of other fish rather than for engulfing prey whole — the body plan is that of an agile, fast-darting predator rather than a heavy-bodied ambush hunter. The four dark longitudinal lines along the body that give the species its name are the most reliable field character distinguishing it from congeners.
