Taxonomy & naming
Ichthyborus ornatus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1899 from material collected in the Congo basin. It sits in the family Distichodontidae, a large African characiform family whose best-known members — the genus Distichodus — are algae- and plant-grazers, but which also contains a small, distinctive lineage of predatory fin- and scale-eaters built around the genus Ichthyborus and its relatives. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Ichthyborus ornatus as a valid species and the combination cited above as current; this article keeps that genus assignment rather than substituting an older or newer combination.
The genus name Ichthyborus is widely rendered in the hobby literature as alluding to a voracious, fish-eating habit, and the specific epithet ornatus (Latin for "ornamented" or "adorned") points to the species' patterned finnage and body markings relative to its plainer relatives. In the aquarium trade it is most often sold under the English common name "ornate fin nipper," a name that is as much a warning label as an identifier.
Morphology
Ichthyborus ornatus has the elongated, laterally compressed, torpedo-like body typical of the genus, built for quick bursts of speed rather than sustained cruising. The head is pointed with a distinctly underslung, beak-like lower jaw — the physical toolkit behind its fin- and scale-rasping habit — and the mouth carries small, sharp teeth adapted for shearing rather than crushing.
