Ichthyborus monodi is an African characin with a genuinely unsettling feeding habit: rather than swallowing whole prey, it specialises in rasping fins and scales off other living fish, leaving its victim to swim away wounded rather than eaten. It belongs to Distichodontidae, the family that also holds the plant-grazing Distichodus, but Ichthyborus and its relatives took the opposite evolutionary path toward piscivory and fin-eating. Growing to a real adult size of around 8.5 in standard length (up to roughly 9 in total length), it is a solitary-to-loosely-social predator from West and Central African rivers, not a peaceful community fish, and anyone keeping it needs to plan tankmates and space around that fact rather than around its comparatively modest size.

Taxonomy & naming

Ichthyborus monodi was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1927. It sits in the genus Ichthyborus, within the family Distichodontidae — a large African freshwater family of roughly 16 genera and around 110 valid species that the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as the authority for valid names in this group. The genus name Ichthyborus derives from Greek roots meaning, roughly, "that eats fishes," a fitting label for a lineage that includes both whole-fish predators and specialised fin-eaters.

Distichodontidae is unusual in containing this split personality: well-known genera like Distichodus are herbivorous grazers, while Ichthyborus, along with genera such as Belonophago, Eugnathichthys and Phago, evolved toward piscivory, with some species becoming pterygophagous — fin-eating — specialists. Ichthyborus monodi itself is treated as a mixed feeder within that spectrum (see Feeding). No taxonomic synonymy or genus reassignment is noted in the sources consulted; the species remains in Ichthyborus.

Morphology

Ichthyborus monodi reaches a documented maximum of 8 in standard length, with a total length figure of about 9 in reported for the species — a moderately large, elongate characin rather than a small nano fish. Like other members of its genus it has a distinctive beak-shaped, protruding mouth adapted for its predatory feeding style, an adaptation shared across the fin- and fish-eating Distichodontidae even though the genus is not a single-diet specialist.

Detailed morphometric data beyond size and general body form is sparse in the sources available; the species is most reliably distinguished from its congeners and from similar distichodontids by a combination of jaw structure, fin placement and meristic counts documented in the original 1927 description and subsequent regional ichthyological surveys, which were not available in full for this account.

Habitat

Ichthyborus monodi is native to West and Central African river systems, with FishBase distribution records citing the Niger Delta in Nigeria, the lower Ouémé River in Benin, the Cross River spanning the Nigeria–Cameroon border, and the Wouri River in Cameroon. Hobby-source accounts describe it favouring calm, sheltered waters — marshes, lake margins and slow, well-vegetated stretches — consistent with an ambush-oriented predator rather than a fish of fast open channels.

Water conditions across this range run warm and tend toward soft to moderately hard, roughly neutral pH, typical of tropical West African lowland rivers. FishBase reports a temperature range of about 75–81 °F, while an aquarium-guide source gives a slightly broader captive range of 73–82 °F with pH around 6.9–7.2 — figures consistent with warm, subtropical-to-tropical African river conditions rather than the extreme soft blackwater sometimes assumed for African species.

Feeding

Ichthyborus monodi is a carnivore built around a specialised and, for a community aquarium, hazardous feeding strategy. A DNA-barcoding study of pterygophagy (fin-eating) in Distichodontidae identifies Ichthyborus as feeding opportunistically on the fins of a remarkably broad range of other fish — documented prey spans nine families across four orders, including cichlids, mochokid and claroteid catfishes, and alestid characins — biting a fin or patch of scales from a living fish rather than killing and consuming it outright. The same study found that at least one congener, I. ornatus, also takes whole fish on occasion, indicating the genus is a facultative rather than strictly obligate fin-eater, and the genus is additionally known to engage in cannibalism.

Hobby sources describe I. monodi more specifically as feeding mainly on small invertebrates — crustaceans and insects — taken with its beak-shaped mouth, alongside the piscivorous and fin-rasping behaviour documented in the scientific literature. In practical terms this means the species should be treated as a genuine predator: it will not thrive on flake or vegetable matter, and its presence poses a real, well-documented risk to the fins and scales of tankmates.

Mating

No courtship behaviour, pairing sequence, or sexual dimorphism is documented for Ichthyborus monodi in the sources available. FishBase and the aquarium-hobby accounts consulted describe the species as solitary or loosely social and territorial, which is not conducive to the pair-bonding and shoal-conditioning strategies used to trigger spawning in many other characins, but no direct observations of courtship in the wild or in captivity were found. Breeding

This is consistent with the broader pattern in African distichodontids: Distichodus and the citharinids are egg-scatterers that are rarely bred at home, and Distichodus in particular is considered very difficult to spawn in captivity. In the aquarium

Ichthyborus monodi is not a beginner community fish. At a real adult size of roughly 8–9 in, it needs a large, well-covered tank — hobby sources note it requires space and hiding places and shows aggressive tendencies in captivity, consistent with its territorial, solitary-to-small-group temperament in the wild. Most importantly, its documented fin- and scale-rasping feeding behaviour makes it a genuine hazard to almost any tankmate with fins or scales to lose; this is not an occasional nipper but a species whose feeding ecology is built around exactly that behaviour, targeting prey across a very broad range of other fish families in the wild.

Keepers should provide dense cover (driftwood, roots, robust plants) to give this naturally sheltered-water fish a sense of security, maintain warm water in roughly the 73–82 °F range at a close-to-neutral pH, and think carefully — or simply avoid — housing it with any fish it could realistically injure. It is best suited to a species tank or to very large, fast, thick-bodied tankmates that are poor targets for fin-rasping, and it should not be treated as a docile oddball fish on the strength of its moderate size alone.

Conservation

Ichthyborus monodi is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List, with an assessment dated 11 May 2019. This reflects a species with a documented multi-river distribution across the Niger Delta, lower Ouémé, Cross River and Wouri River systems in Nigeria, Benin and Cameroon, without the narrow single-locality range that typically drives a higher-risk listing in West African freshwater fish.
