Leporellus vittatus is a slender, torpedo-shaped headstander from South America's largest river systems, instantly recognisable by the odd, head-down angle it holds while grazing algae and biofilm off wood and rock. It belongs to Anostomidae, a family whose best-known members — the larger Leporinus and Anostomus species — have a reputation among aquarists as territorial, sometimes fin-nipping fish that grow well past what a modest tank can hold; Leporellus vittatus itself reaches a substantial 12 in and should be planned for on that scale rather than judged by its slim juvenile profile. It is a broadly distributed, mostly herbivorous grazer that does best with real vegetable content in its diet, current to swim against, and room to reach its full adult length.

Taxonomy & naming

Leporellus vittatus was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1850, and its authority is conventionally written in parentheses — (Valenciennes, 1850) — because the species has since been moved out of whatever genus it was originally placed in and into Leporellus. It sits in the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes; the family also contains the much larger and more diverse genera Leporinus and Anostomus, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for how these genera are currently split and for which combination of names is valid at any given time.

The genus name Leporellus is a diminutive built on Leporinus, itself derived from the Latin lepus ("hare"), an old allusion to the family's habit of nibbling and grazing rather than to any real resemblance to a rabbit; the common name "yellow rabbit characin" preserves that same hare imagery in English. The species epithet vittatus is Latin for "banded" or "striped," referring to the dark lateral stripe and spotting pattern running along the flank. Wikispecies lists the authority consistent with Valenciennes's 1850 description.

Morphology

Leporellus vittatus has the classic anostomid build: an elongated, cylindrical-to-slightly-compressed body, a small terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth set low on a pointed head, and small, specialised teeth suited to scraping rather than shearing. FishBase records a maximum size of 12 in standard length for the species (males/unsexed), with a common length around 11.5 in SL — a genuinely large fish for a characin, and one that dwarfs many of the small tetras it is sometimes casually grouped with in the trade.

Colouration follows the "vittatus" (banded) epithet: a dark horizontal stripe runs along the body, typically broken or overlaid with a row of dark blotches or spots, against a paler yellowish-to-silver ground colour, which is also the basis for the common name "spotted headstander." As in other Anostomidae, the swim bladder is reduced and displaced toward the rear of the body — an adaptation FishBase notes is shared across the family and that helps explain the fish's naturally bottom-oriented, head-down posture, discussed further below.

Habitat

Leporellus vittatus has a wide South American range. Seriously Fish describes it as present across the Amazon River system in Brazil and Peru, the Paraná-Paraguay drainage of southern Brazil and Paraguay, and the río São Francisco basin of southern Brazil — three major, largely separate drainage systems, which is an unusually broad distribution for a single anostomid species. Across that range it occupies flowing river channels and associated habitats where hard surfaces — submerged wood, rock and stone — carry the algal and biofilm growth it feeds on.

The aquarium literature in the cache gives the clearest picture of the water it is kept in: pH roughly 6.0–6.5, general hardness up to about 12 dH, and a temperature range of 72–77 °F — soft, mildly acidic, moderate-temperature water consistent with flowing Amazonian and Paraná-Paraguay tributaries rather than a stagnant blackwater extreme. Aquarium Glaser notes the species does best in well-lit tanks with a current, which lets it graze naturally over illuminated, algae-carrying surfaces the way it would over submerged wood or rock in the wild.

Feeding

Leporellus vittatus is a grazer, not a predator. FishBase describes it as a bottom-oriented species with specialised teeth adapted for feeding on plant material, and Aquarium Glaser is explicit that while the fish will accept virtually any aquarium food on offer, it requires a real vegetable component in its diet for proper long-term nutrition — it is not a fish that thrives on protein-heavy flake or pellet alone.

In the aquarium this translates to a diet built around algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach) and vegetable-forward pellets or flake, supplemented with a modest amount of small live or frozen foods. A tank without any algae or biofilm to graze between feedings, or one furnished with prized soft-leaved plants, will likely see the fish sampling both the décor and any tender foliage, in keeping with its natural grazing habit; this is a fish to plan a diet and a hardscape around, not one to treat as an incidental bottom cleaner.

Mating

Aquarium Glaser records that Leporellus vittatus is a hierarchical fish, meaning a group establishes a pecking order, and that breeding pairs form and spawn in densely vegetated areas of the tank. Beyond that, the cache and the broader hobby literature offer little detail on courtship behaviour or how a compatible pair signals readiness to spawn — no distinct courtship display, colour change, or reliable external cue is documented for this species.

No external sexual dimorphism is reported in the available sources; sexes are not reliably told apart by colour or fin shape, and hobbyists who have paired the species appear to rely on behavioural cues — pairing off and increased territoriality around a chosen spawning site — rather than any visible marker.

Breeding

Like most headstanders, Leporellus vittatus is understood to be an egg-scattering species with no parental care, and it is rarely bred in home aquaria. The one breeding note in the available sources — from Aquarium Glaser — describes pairs spawning in densely vegetated areas of the tank, consistent with the broader anostomid pattern of scattering adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or plant-like cover rather than building a nest or guarding a clutch.

Aquarium Glaser recommends a well-lit tank with current, which both suits the species' natural grazing behaviour and keeps it active and displaying its banded pattern to best effect; the fish is described as hierarchical, so a group will sort out a pecking order, and adequate space and sightline breaks help keep that hierarchy from turning into persistent harassment of subordinate fish.

As with many of its Anostomidae relatives — including the notably nippy larger Leporinus and Anostomus species — caution around tankmate choice is warranted even though no aggressive predation is specifically reported for this species. Provide driftwood and rock for it to graze, keep a genuine vegetable component in the diet (see "Feeding"), and expect that ornamental soft-leaved plants may be sampled or shredded given the fish's grazing, herbivore-leaning habits. Given its adult size and current requirement, this is a fish for a large, mature setup rather than a small community tank.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Leporellus vittatus as Least Concern, reflecting a very wide distribution across three major South American drainage systems — the Amazon, the Paraná-Paraguay, and the río São Francisco — and no reported major population decline. This breadth of range, spanning both Brazil and Peru, gives the species considerably more resilience to localised habitat pressure than narrow-range anostomids restricted to a single river system.
