Like the rest of the family Crenuchidae, it behaves nothing like its piranha and pacu relatives elsewhere in this atlas: it is a bottom-perching micro-predator that darts a short distance, then settles motionless on a fin and pectoral-fin brace, watching for tiny prey rather than cruising open water. At a maximum recorded 4 in standard length it is a genuinely modest fish, and it is traded only occasionally and in small numbers as part of the wider Melanocharacidium/Characidium darter-characin group prized by blackwater and biotope specialists. Data on this particular species is sparse outside its original description and FishBase's distributional summary, so this account is deliberately conservative about anything not documented for it specifically.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanocharacidium rex was described by the American ichthyologist James E. Böhlke in 1958. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters and sailfin characins — within the order Characiformes, and more specifically to the subfamily Characidiinae, the stream-bed "darter" characins that include the large genus Characidium alongside smaller genera such as Melanocharacidium, Klausewitzia and Odontocharacidium. The genus name Melanocharacidium combines the Greek melan (black) with charax, an old term for a spiny marine fish that gave rise to the family name Characidae/Characidium; the species epithet rex is Latin for "king," though the specific reasoning behind Böhlke's choice is not recorded in the sources available here.

Crenuchidae has had a genuinely unsettled taxonomic history, and Characidiinae in particular has been split and re-split as researchers worked out which small, superficially similar darter genera are natural groups. Melanocharacidium itself is a relatively recently erected genus separating certain dark-pigmented, deep-water Amazonian darters from the broader Characidium. This account keeps the genus as Melanocharacidium per the current Catalog of Fishes treatment and does not attempt to reassign it.

Morphology

As the genus name suggests, Melanocharacidium species tend toward darker, often blackish or heavily melanic body pigmentation compared with the more variably marked Characidium, though detailed colour-pattern description specific to M. rex is not available in the sources consulted for this article. At under 4 in it does not need a large tank, but it does best in a quiet, well-oxygenated setup with sand or fine gravel, leaf litter and some current to mimic its native stream habitat, alongside calm, similarly sized tankmates that will not out-compete it at feeding time.

Because it is a micro-predator that may initially refuse prepared foods, new keepers should be prepared to offer live or frozen micro-foods until the fish settles. As with the family's more famous sailfin members, this is not a fish for a boisterous community tank — its dart-and-perch behaviour and small size make it vulnerable to fast, aggressive tankmates.
