Taxonomy & naming
Melanocharacidium melanopteron was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Paulo Buckup in 1993, in the same paper that erected the genus Melanocharacidium itself. The genus sits in the subfamily Characidiinae within the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters and sailfin characins — a group that the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as distinct from the open-water tetras (Characidae) on the strength of a suite of skeletal and fin characters, including the placement and structure of the adipose fin in many genera.
Melanocharacidium is one of several genera split out of the old, broadly defined Characidium as characidiin taxonomy was revised through the 1990s and 2000s, alongside genera such as Ammocryptocharax, Elachocharax and Klausewitzia. As with much of this revision, species-level identification within the genus rests on fin-ray counts, squamation and colour-pattern details that are difficult to confirm without a specimen in hand, so field and trade identifications of Melanocharacidium species should be treated cautiously.

Like its Crenuchid relatives it likely needs small live or frozen foods rather than flake, and, as a species with essentially no aquarium track record, should not be assumed hardy or easy without direct evidence.
