Myloplus torquatus, the orangefin pacu, is a deep-bodied, disc-shaped silver dollar from the Amazon, Rio Negro and Orinoco basins of South America — a mirror-flanked schooler, not a predator, that spends its days grazing algae, leaf litter and fallen fruit rather than hunting. Reaching close to 12 in as an adult, it is a genuinely large aquarium fish that needs both open swimming room and the company of its own kind to settle. Its other defining trait is appetite: this is a committed plant-shredder, and a well-planted tank in its path will not survive intact. Kept in a robust, hard-scaped setup with a real group and vegetable-forward feeding, it is a striking, peaceful centrepiece fish; kept alone in a delicate aquascape, it is a disappointment for both the fish and the plants.

Taxonomy & naming

Myloplus torquatus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858, in the same era and often from the same expedition material as many of the Serrasalmidae species named from Brazilian collections. It belongs to the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Myloplus, one of several silver-dollar lineages carved out of the old, catch-all genus Myleus as the family's taxonomy has been revised using dentition and skeletal characters.

Older literature and some hobby sources still list this species under its historical combination, Myleus torquatus; per the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) and the modern Serrasalmidae revision reflected in current taxonomic databases, the valid combination is Myloplus torquatus (Kner, 1858), and that is the name used throughout this article. The common names "orangefin pacu" and "silver dollar" both describe the fish in the trade; "silver dollar" is a generic term shared with several related Myloplus and Metynnis species and is not unique to this one.

Morphology

Myloplus torquatus shows the classic silver dollar profile: a strongly laterally compressed, disc-shaped body, a small terminal mouth suited to grazing rather than seizing prey, and a mirror-bright silver flank that catches light as the fish moves through open water. FishBase records a maximum size of 11.5 in standard length for males and unsexed individuals, and 11 in SL for females, with a maximum recorded weight of 1.3 kg — figures that make clear this is a substantially larger fish at maturity than its coin-like juvenile appearance suggests.

The common name "orangefin" points to the species' most distinctive field mark: an orange to reddish wash across the fins, most often the anal and caudal fins, set against the silver body. As in other Myloplus and Myleus-group silver dollars, the teeth are broad, flattened and multicuspid, built for shearing plant material and cracking seeds rather than piercing flesh — a dental architecture entirely different from the blade-like teeth of true piranhas in the same family.

Habitat

The species is native to the Amazon basin, the Rio Negro and the Orinoco basin of South America, occurring across a broad swath of these river systems rather than being confined to a single tributary. Within that range it is associated with the flooded-forest and open-channel habitats typical of Amazonian silver dollars, where seasonal inundation brings the fish into contact with submerged terrestrial vegetation, fallen fruit and algae-covered wood and roots that make up much of its diet.

The cache does not provide detailed water-chemistry figures specific to this species; broadly, Amazon and Rio Negro silver dollars of this kind are found in warm, soft, acidic-to-neutral water typical of blackwater and mixed clearwater tributaries, though local conditions vary considerably across such a wide native range. Keepers should treat the aquarium water parameters below as a reasonable, conservative starting point rather than a precisely documented figure for this exact species.

Feeding

Myloplus torquatus is an omnivore with a strong lean toward plant material, consistent with the broader silver dollar group. In the wild it grazes algae, submerged and waterlogged leaf matter, and fruit and seeds that fall into the water from the flooded forest canopy, supplementing this with some insects and other small invertebrate material. FishBase notes the species is capable of a serious bite despite its herbivorous leanings — a reminder that the shearing dentition built for tough plant fibre and seed coats is not a delicate mouth.

In the aquarium, this translates directly into a fish that needs a vegetable-forward diet: blanched greens (courgette, cucumber, spinach), spirulina-based flake or pellet, and algae wafers should form the bulk of feeding, with occasional protein such as quality pellets or frozen foods offered alongside. Keepers who feed a meat-heavy diet and expect the fish to leave live plants alone are consistently disappointed — see "In the aquarium" below.

Mating

The cache does not document species-specific courtship behaviour for Myloplus torquatus, and no reliable external sexual dimorphism is recorded — males and females are not readily distinguished by colour or fin shape from the available sources. As in other egg-scattering silver dollars, spawning in aquaria and aquaculture settings is generally associated with a period of active shoaling and chasing among a conditioned group rather than the fixed pair-bonding and nest-defence seen in true piranhas of the same family.

Given the lack of species-specific data, keepers attempting to breed this fish should rely on the general silver dollar approach described in "Breeding" below rather than expect documented, species-specific courtship cues.

Breeding

Myloplus torquatus is an egg-scatterer, not a nest-builder, mouthbrooder or substrate guarder. Following the pattern documented for silver dollars generally, spawning is triggered by soft, warm, slightly acidic water and typically takes place over fine-leaved plants or plant-like spawning mops, with the female releasing large numbers of adhesive eggs that scatter and settle rather than being placed in a defended nest.

Parental care is absent: once eggs are released, neither parent guards or fans them, and both the eggs and the resulting fry are vulnerable to predation by other fish in the tank, including the parents themselves. This is occasionally achieved in the hobby with dedicated silver dollar breeders using a bare or sparsely furnished spawning tank, soft acidic water and dim lighting, but it is not a routine or frequent home-aquarium event for this species, and the cache records no confirmed captive-breeding reports specific to Myloplus torquatus.

In the aquarium

The single most important planning fact for this species is its adult size: at up to roughly 11.5 in SL and 1.3 kg, Myloplus torquatus is a genuinely large, deep-bodied fish that needs a large aquarium — hobbyist care sources recommend a minimum of around 100 US gallons (roughly 100 US gal) to give a group room for active, open swimming. It is a schooling fish and should be kept in a group of six or more; a lone specimen or pair in a small tank is a recipe for a stressed, poorly coloured fish.

The second essential fact is that this is a committed plant-shredder. Live plants in reach of a group of adult silver dollars will be stripped, shredded or uprooted; keepers who want live vegetation should either accept it as a standing food source, use only tough, unpalatable species, or forgo live plants altogether in favour of driftwood, rockwork and other hardscape. Robust filtration is needed to handle the bioload of a group of large, active fish, and tankmates should be chosen for size and temperament compatible with a big, boisterous shoaling omnivore rather than delicate nano species.

Conservation

Myloplus torquatus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, and no assessment for the species could be located; its conservation status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE) rather than a documented category such as Least Concern or threatened. This is a common situation among Amazonian Serrasalmidae that are neither high-profile aquarium staples nor primary subjects of dedicated conservation assessment, and Not Evaluated should not be read as evidence the species is secure — only that a formal assessment has not been carried out.

FishBase notes the species is used as a commercial food fish in Brazil, indicating at least local fisheries pressure within part of its Amazon, Rio Negro and Orinoco range, alongside collection for the aquarium trade. No specific population trend or habitat-threat data for this species was found in the cache.
