Phago intermedius was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1899. It sits in the genus Phago within the family Distichodontidae, order Characiformes — the same family that holds the far more numerous, mostly plant-grazing Distichodus, but Phago diverged into a specialised fin- and scale-eating niche instead. The genus Phago is small and confined to Africa, and its species are frequently confused with one another and with juvenile Distichodus in both the scientific literature and the aquarium trade, since all share the elongated, predatory-looking body plan that sets them apart from their blunter, herbivorous relatives.
