Taxonomy & naming
Phago loricatus was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1865. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae — a largely African family of characiform fishes that also includes the plant-grazing Distichodus — within the small genus Phago, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as holding a handful of valid species, all specialised fin- and scale-feeders restricted to West and Central African river systems.
The genus name Phago derives from the Greek phagein, "to eat," a nod to the fish's aggressive feeding habit, while loricatus is Latin for "armoured" or "clad in mail," likely referencing the fish's elongated, hard-scaled, torpedo-like body. Phago is easily confused by non-specialists with true piranhas or with other nippy characins, but its narrow, pike-like head and tricuspid dentition set it apart; within the genus, species-level identification rests on fine details of tooth count, fin-ray counts and body proportions that are not well documented in aquarium literature.
Morphology
Phago loricatus has an elongated, torpedo-shaped body with a pointed, pike-like head — a build suited to fast, precise strikes rather than sustained pursuit. FishBase records a maximum length of 6.5 in standard length for the species, and aquarium literature confirms wild adults reach roughly 6.5 in. It is a modestly sized fish for a specialist predator, but its size is not the source of its danger to tankmates — its dentition is.
The jaws carry a single row of tricuspid, blade-like teeth adapted for shearing fin membrane and scraping scales in a single quick pass rather than for gripping and swallowing prey. No reliable external sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species; males and females are not reported to differ consistently in colour, fin shape or body proportion.
Habitat
Phago loricatus is native to West Africa, with confirmed records from the lower Niger Delta, the Bénoué, Ouémé, Ogun and Cross river systems, spanning Nigeria, Benin and Cameroon; the type locality is given simply as the western coast of Africa (Niger). There are no confirmed records from the Congo basin, so the species should be treated as a West African endemic rather than a broadly Central African one.
It inhabits warm, typically soft, often tannin-influenced lowland river and floodplain habitat characteristic of West African drainages, with recorded aquarium-relevant water temperatures of roughly 72–82 °F. Detailed water-chemistry data (pH, hardness) from wild populations is not available in the cache and should not be assumed to match South American blackwater extremes; keepers should treat the numbers above as the best-documented range rather than a precise wild profile.
Feeding
Phago loricatus is a specialised fin-biter, using its tricuspid teeth to cut chunks from the fins — and, in the wider genus, scales — of other fish, sometimes targeting fish considerably larger than itself. In the wild its diet also includes large insects and whole small fish, so it is not purely a fin-and-scale grazer; it will take prey outright when the opportunity allows.
In the aquarium, Phago loricatus is reported to require live food essentially exclusively and to decline rapidly in condition if not kept consistently well fed — this is not a fish that adapts readily to prepared foods. That dependence on live prey, combined with its fin-biting habit, is the central husbandry challenge with this species and the main reason it is considered unsuitable for beginners.
Mating
No courtship or pairing behaviour has been documented for Phago loricatus in the sources consulted. As with most Distichodontidae, detailed reproductive biology — including any pre-spawning behaviour, pairing cues or sexual signalling — has not been recorded either in the field or in aquarium accounts. This is genuinely sparse data rather than an oversight in this article: the species is essentially unstudied on this point.
Breeding
Phago loricatus has not been documented as bred in the home aquarium, and no aquaculture or commercial breeding program is known for the species. Like Distichodus and the other distichodontids and citharinids, egg-scattering is the presumed reproductive mode for the family, but no spawning account, egg description or fry-rearing report exists for this species specifically in the available literature.
Given its dependence on live food and its solitary, aggressive disposition even toward conspecifics, it is reasonable to expect that captive breeding would be very difficult even if attempted — but this is inference from its biology, not a documented breeding failure. Prospective keepers should not expect to breed this species and should source specimens as wild-collected or trade imports rather than tank-bred stock.
In the aquarium
Phago loricatus is a specialist fish for experienced keepers only. Because it rasps fins and scales from other fish using precise, blade-like teeth, it is a genuine hazard to essentially any tankmate, including fish much larger than itself; the strong hobby consensus, echoed in the cache, is that it is best kept alone as a single-species specimen rather than in a community of any kind. A single Phago loricatus in a modestly sized, well-covered aquarium — with structure to patrol and hide around — is the standard recommendation.
The larger husbandry challenge is diet: this species is reported to require live food essentially exclusively and to starve or decline quickly if not consistently well fed, which makes it a demanding, high-maintenance fish rather than a "set and forget" oddball. Water should be kept warm, in the roughly 72–82 °F range documented for the species. There is no record of the fish being kept for looks or temperament — hobbyists who keep Phago do so specifically for its specialised, predatory feeding behaviour, and it should be acquired with that reality, and the live-food commitment it demands, clearly understood.
Conservation
Phago loricatus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, reflecting its presence across multiple West African river systems (the Niger Delta, Bénoué, Ouémé, Ogun and Cross basins) rather than a single vulnerable population. It is not a species of particular conservation concern at present.
The species is not a significant part of the ornamental trade at any commercial scale — it turns up occasionally as a specialist import rather than a staple — so aquarium collection pressure is minimal. As with many West African river fish, broader regional pressures such as damming, water-quality change and habitat degradation are the more relevant long-term watch items for the rivers it inhabits, even though the species itself is not currently classified as threatened.
