Taxonomy & naming
Poecilocharax bovalii was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909 and placed in its own genus, Poecilocharax, within the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters, which also includes the single-species sailfin characin genus Crenuchus and the widespread stream-bed darters of the genus Characidium. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists the valid name as Poecilocharax bovalii, though the epithet is technically bovaliorum under strict ICZN grammar; bovalii is the name in current usage and the one carried on FishBase and GBIF.
The genus name combines the Greek poikilos, "many-coloured" or "variable", with charax, a general term for a spiny or armoured fish used widely across Characiformes genus names. The species is confined to the Potaro River drainage in Guyana, and Eigenmann's type locality — a creek at Savannah Landing — sits in the same watershed as the far better-known Kaieteur Falls. The name Poecilocharax bovaliorum is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Poecilocharax bovalii is a genuinely tiny fish, reaching a maximum recorded length of just 2 in total length, which places it firmly in nano-fish territory alongside its relative Crenuchus spilurus. Like other crenuchid darters it has a slender, elongated body built for short, controlled bursts of movement rather than sustained cruising, and males in particular are noted in aquarist accounts as showing extended, sail-like fins — a family trait shared with the sailfin characin — used in display and in disputes between rival males.
Detailed published descriptions of colouration and fin structure are sparse for this species; most of what is known comes from the original description and the handful of aquarist reports of live specimens, which describe a dark, understated body pattern suited to camouflage against the fine sand and leaf litter of its home streams rather than the bright colours seen in many other small characins.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Potaro River drainage in Guyana, in the vicinity of Kaieteur Falls, and is known from forest creeks such as the type locality at Savannah Landing. These are blackwater to clearwater streams running over fine, dark sand or a mix of sand and earth, thickly carpeted with leaf litter and fallen wood — structurally similar to the leaf-litter creeks favoured by many small, secretive Neotropical characins.
FishBase records water conditions of roughly 73–81 °F, a circumneutral pH around 7.0, and moderate hardness of about 5–10 dH, which is softer and less acidic than the extreme blackwater sometimes assumed for Guiana Shield fish. Water movement in these creeks is generally moderate, and the fish is associated with cover — leaf litter, submerged wood and fine substrate — rather than open water.
Feeding
Poecilocharax bovalii is a micro-predator in the mould of most crenuchid darters, taking tiny invertebrates rather than grazing or scavenging broadly. Aquarist accounts are consistent and specific on this point: the species will not take non-moving foods such as flake and needs live or convincingly moving prey to feed at all.
In practice this means small live foods — brine shrimp, bloodworm and similarly sized live or frozen invertebrates — are reported as the only reliable diet in captivity. This is a meaningful barrier to keeping the species, since a keeper needs an ongoing live- or frozen-food culture rather than a simple prepared-food routine.
Mating
Very little is documented about courtship in Poecilocharax bovalii specifically. Aquarist sources describe the males as shy but pugnacious toward one another, suggesting the kind of male-male rivalry and display seen in its relative Crenuchus spilurus, in which males use extended fins to court females and to contest space with rival males. No detailed account of pairing, courtship display or spawning site selection in this species has been published.
Given the near-total absence of the species from the hobby and the lack of research attention on its reproductive biology, it is honest to say that its courtship behaviour is essentially undocumented rather than to extrapolate confidently from its better-known relatives.
Breeding
Breeding in Poecilocharax bovalii has not been documented in the aquarium literature available for this species — aquarist sources explicitly state that nothing is known about how it reproduces, and it is not known to have been bred in captivity. This stands in contrast to its relative Crenuchus spilurus, the sailfin characin, which is a known cave/leaf spawner with brief male care of a small clutch; by family pattern, Poecilocharax likely breeds in a broadly similar way, but that inference has not been confirmed for this species and should not be presented as established fact.
Given the species' rarity in the trade and the tiny size of the fish, any successful spawning would be a notable first for the hobby. Prospective keepers should treat breeding as an open question rather than a routine expectation.
In the aquarium
Poecilocharax bovalii is exceptionally rare in the aquarium trade — aquarist sources describe it as almost never available — so most keepers will encounter it only as a description rather than a fish to buy. Where it does appear, care guidance calls for a large, densely planted tank with abundant hiding places, since the species is shy and needs cover to feel secure; a fine dark sand substrate with leaf litter and driftwood, moderate water movement and warm, near-neutral water (roughly 73–81 °F, pH around 7.0) replicate its native creeks.
The most important practical constraint is diet: because this species will not eat non-moving food, keeping it means committing to a steady supply of small live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworm. Males are reported as pugnacious toward each other, so stocking should allow enough space and cover for rival males to avoid constant confrontation. Given its small adult size, this is a nano-fish suited to a quiet, specialist setup rather than a general community tank.
Conservation
Poecilocharax bovalii is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable, an assessment dated 29 December 2020, reflecting a genuinely tiny natural range restricted to the Potaro River drainage around Kaieteur Falls in Guyana. The listing cites both a declining population trend and an area of occupancy small enough to meet IUCN's criteria for the Vulnerable category.
Because its entire known distribution sits within a single, relatively well-protected watershed centred on Kaieteur National Park, the species is somewhat insulated from the broad deforestation and mining pressures affecting other Guiana Shield rivers, but its narrow range means it has essentially no buffer against any localised habitat disturbance. Its near-absence from the aquarium trade means collection pressure is not a meaningful threat; the conservation story here is almost entirely about the fragility of a single-watershed endemic.
