Taxonomy & naming
Poecilocharax rhizophilus was formally described by Ohara, Pastana & Camelier, with the species first reported in the popular and scientific press in May 2022 and the formal taxonomic publication dated 2023. It was described alongside a second new species, P. callipterus, as part of a revision of the genus Poecilocharax within the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters — in the order Characiformes. The genus is placed in the subfamily Crenuchinae together with Crenuchus, the sailfin characin; both genera are miniature, bottom-associated micropredators quite unlike the free-swimming tetras most aquarists picture when they hear "characin."
The species epithet rhizophilus ("root-loving") describes its habitat rather than any anatomical feature: type specimens were collected from tangled root masses along the margins of a small blackwater stream in the Apuí region of Amazonas, Brazil, and the fish appears to depend on this root-tangle microhabitat. As a very recently described, single-locality species, P. rhizophilus has not yet been assessed by the IUCN Red List, and essentially nothing has been published on it beyond the original description and subsequent news coverage of the discovery.
Morphology
Poecilocharax rhizophilus is a true miniature: reported standard length is only about 0.5–1 in, making it one of the smallest known members of Crenuchidae and notably smaller than its congener P. weitzmani (1.5–2 in SL) or P. bovalii (up to 2 in total length). Like other Poecilocharax, it has the characteristic slim, faintly torpedo-shaped darter body built for perching on the substrate and short, quick dashes rather than sustained swimming.
Males carry the genus's signature ornamentation in miniature form: dark streaking on the dorsal and anal fins set against an amber-to-yellow body, a pattern used in species-recognition and likely in courtship display. Females are plainer and smaller-finned, consistent with the modest sexual dimorphism reported across the genus; see "Mating" below.
Habitat
The species is known only from its type locality in the Apuí region of Amazonas state, Brazil — a small, muddy-bottomed blackwater stream where the fish shelters in dense, tangled root masses along the margins rather than in open water. This root-associated microhabitat, reflected directly in the species name, appears to be a defining feature of its ecology rather than an incidental collecting site.
No water-chemistry data specific to P. rhizophilus has been published, but its congener P. weitzmani — used here as the closest available ecological model — occupies soft, strongly acidic Amazonian blackwater (roughly pH 4.0–5.0, very low hardness and conductivity, 70–82 °F), and P. rhizophilus, sharing the same blackwater-stream, root-tangle habitat type in the same drainage, most likely experiences broadly similar conditions. This should be treated as an informed inference from a sister species, not a confirmed reading for P. rhizophilus itself.
Feeding
Crenuchid darters in Poecilocharax and Crenuchus are micropredators that pick aquatic insect larvae and small crustaceans from the substrate and root tangles rather than foraging in open water, and P. rhizophilus's tiny adult size (under 1 in) points to correspondingly tiny prey — micro-invertebrates rather than anything resembling a typical tetra's diet. No dedicated dietary study of P. rhizophilus exists, so this is inferred from the genus and family.
Its congener P. weitzmani is documented as an obligate live-food feeder in captivity, generally refusing flake and taking only live or frozen micro-foods; a fish as small as P. rhizophilus would need foods sized accordingly, such as microworm, vinegar eels or newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii, well below what most community-tank foods provide.
Mating
No courtship behaviour has been published for Poecilocharax rhizophilus specifically — the species has only just been described and has not been documented breeding in the aquarium or in the field beyond its type collection. Drawing on P. weitzmani as the closest studied relative, courtship in this genus is associated with cave- or leaf-surface display by the male, whose streaked dorsal and anal fins are likely used to signal to females in the confined, shaded spaces the fish favours.
Sexual dimorphism in the genus is subtle: males carry the dark fin streaking described under "Morphology," while females are plainer-finned and, in mature condition, may appear slightly fuller-bodied. No dimorphism data specific to P. rhizophilus has been documented.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for Poecilocharax rhizophilus itself — it is too recently described, and no aquarium or field spawning account has been published. What is known comes entirely from its congener P. weitzmani, a cave/leaf-surface spawner in which the male selects and tends a small clutch of eggs, laid in a sheltered site such as a cave, root crevice or the underside of a broad leaf, and provides brief but active parental care: fanning the clutch, removing infertile eggs, and tending newly hatched fry with tail-flicking movements. Eggs in P. weitzmani hatch in roughly four to five days.
If P. rhizophilus follows the same crenuchid-darter pattern — plausible given its shared genus, habitat type and root/cave-associated lifestyle — it would be a genuinely breedable nano species with male parental care, rather than an egg-scatterer with no care. That said, this is inference from a relative, not an observed fact for this species, and prospective breeders should treat it as promising but unconfirmed.
In the aquarium
Poecilocharax rhizophilus has not established itself in the aquarium trade — it was only described in 2022–2023 from a single stream, and there is no record of it being kept, imported or bred by hobbyists. Everything here is therefore projection from its biology and from its congener P. weitzmani, which is occasionally kept as a true nano blackwater specialist: a shy, bottom-perching fish for a quiet, densely planted or leaf-littered species tank with soft, acidic, warm water, dim lighting and minimal current, fed exclusively on small live or frozen foods.
Given its extreme miniature size (under 1 in), any future aquarium care would need to scale down accordingly — a true nano setup with correspondingly small tankmates, if any, and no larger or more boisterous fish that could out-compete it for the tiny live foods it likely requires. As a single-locality, only-just-described species with a stated conservation concern in its own type description, any wild-collected specimens reaching the trade would carry real sustainability questions; this is a fish to watch rather than one to seek out for a tank at present.
Conservation
Poecilocharax rhizophilus has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and currently carries no status (Not Evaluated). However, the species' own describing team and subsequent press coverage flagged it as already vulnerable: it is known from a single small stream in the Apuí region of Amazonas, Brazil, and researchers noted concern over habitat loss in the area alongside the possibility that aquarium-hobby interest in a newly described, highly distinctive nano species could add collecting pressure on top of habitat threats.
As a single-locality endemic with no formal protection status, P. rhizophilus is a clear case where the lack of an IUCN listing reflects recency of discovery rather than any evidence of security — the kind of species conservation-minded aquarists and researchers flag as a watch item pending a proper assessment and, ideally, engagement with Brazilian conservation authorities as suggested in the original coverage of its discovery.
