Taxonomy & naming
Poecilocharax callipterus was described in 2023 by Willian Ohara, Luiz Peixoto Pastana and Priscila Camelier, alongside a second new species, P. rhizophilus, in a paper in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society that also confirmed the monophyly of the subfamily Crenuchinae using both phenotypic and genetic evidence. It was the first description of a new species in this subfamily in roughly 57 years, and it brought the genus Poecilocharax — previously containing only P. weitzmani — to three species.
The genus sits in the family Crenuchidae, the South American darters, within the order Characiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid combination Poecilocharax callipterus; no synonymy or prior combination is relevant here since the name is newly coined. The species epithet callipterus draws on Greek kallos (beautiful) and pteron (fin/wing), a direct reference to the male's oversized, vividly coloured fins — the single most obvious field character separating it from its plainer-finned relatives.
Morphology
Poecilocharax callipterus is a genuinely tiny fish: the type series of paratypes measured 1 in standard length, putting the species' realistic maximum size at around 1 in. Males are the showier sex, reported at roughly 1 in with a dramatically elongated dorsal fin exceeding half the body length, plus vivid red-orange colouration through the fins; a dark spot sits just before the caudal peduncle, a pattern shared with other darter tetras and useful for field identification.
The body plan follows the crenuchid darter template: a slender, elongate profile with a somewhat flattened underside suited to perching on wood, roots and leaf litter rather than holding position in open water, plus large, forward-set eyes and an upturned mouth typical of a fish that watches the water column above it for drifting prey. As in its congener P. weitzmani, females are almost certainly smaller-finned and less colourful, consistent with the sexually dimorphic display fins typical of the genus.
Habitat
The type locality is a small black-water stream — a tributary of the Rio Juma in the Rio Aripuanã drainage of the Rio Madeira basin, in Apuí Municipality, Amazonas State, Brazil, at roughly 459 ft elevation. The stream itself is modest: 3–10 ft wide and 1–3 ft deep, slow-flowing, over a rocky substrate, and stained with tannins from surrounding leaf litter and forest cover in the classic black-water pattern of Amazonian headwater creeks.
As with its congener P. weitzmani, this genus is associated with soft, acidic, tannin-stained water typical of shaded forest streams, where fish shelter among submerged wood, root tangles and accumulated leaf litter at the margins rather than in open channel. No formal water-chemistry readings were reported at the type locality in the cache used for this article, so specific pH and hardness figures below are drawn from the closely related, better-studied P. weitzmani rather than measured directly for P. callipterus.
Feeding
Poecilocharax callipterus is a micro-predator, in keeping with the rest of the genus and the wider darter-tetra group. In the wild it almost certainly targets small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and micro-crustaceans drifting near the stream bed and margins, picked off in short darting movements rather than pursued in open water.
No species-specific feeding data was captured for P. callipterus in the cache used for this article, but the pattern is consistent across Poecilocharax: these are reluctant feeders on dry foods and do best on a diet of small live or frozen items such as Daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia), grindal worms, microworms and finely chopped bloodworm, offered daily given the fish's small size and correspondingly small energy reserves.
Mating
No courtship or pairing behaviour has been documented specifically for Poecilocharax callipterus; the species was described from preserved type material rather than observed live in the aquarium or in the field. Its markedly enlarged, brightly coloured male fins strongly suggest a sexually selected display used in courtship, paralleling the well-documented behaviour of its congener P. weitzmani, where males posture and flare their fins to attract females and to spar with rival males.
Given the close relationship and shared body plan within Poecilocharax, courtship in this species is reasonably expected to follow a similar pattern — a male displaying near a chosen cave or crevice site to draw in a receptive female — but this should be treated as inference from the genus rather than a confirmed observation of P. callipterus itself.
Breeding
There is no aquarium or field breeding record for Poecilocharax callipterus; the species has only been known to science since 2023 and does not yet appear to be established in the hobby. Extrapolating cautiously from its only well-studied congener, P. weitzmani, Poecilocharax as a genus are cave and leaf spawners: a male tends a small clutch of perhaps 50–100 eggs deposited on the ceiling of a cave, crevice or curled leaf, guarding them through a short incubation of around four to five days and continuing to protect the newly hatched fry for a further couple of days before they disperse.
If P. callipterus follows this pattern — plausible given its shared genus, size class and habitat — it would be a genuinely breedable nano species for a patient specialist keeper, but this remains an inference from its relative rather than a documented fact for this species specifically.
In the aquarium
Poecilocharax callipterus has no established aquarium-keeping record; it is a very recently described species collected from a single Amazonian headwater stream, and the notes here are drawn from its close relative P. weitzmani as a reasonable proxy pending direct experience with this species. On that basis, this is a nano fish through and through: a pair could plausibly be kept in a tank as small as roughly 45×12 in footprint, furnished with soft sand, driftwood, leaf litter and dim lighting to recreate the shaded, tannin-stained margins of its home stream.
As a genuine micro-predator, it is unlikely to accept flake or pellet food reliably and would need daily small live or frozen foods. It should be regarded as shy and best suited to a quiet species tank or a very carefully chosen nano community of similarly small, non-aggressive fish, not a general community tank. Given the total absence of a trade or captive-breeding history, any specimens that do reach the hobby should be assumed wild-collected from a very restricted range, which argues for conservative, careful stewardship by any keeper who acquires one.
Conservation
Poecilocharax callipterus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species described only in 2023, it is too recently named for a Red List evaluation to have been completed, and it is correctly categorised as Not Evaluated rather than assigned any threat category.
The species is known only from its type locality and immediate area — a single black-water tributary of the Rio Juma in the Rio Aripuanã drainage, Amazonas, Brazil — which is a narrow-range pattern common among recently described Amazonian headwater fish and one that typically warrants caution even before a formal assessment exists. Broader pressures on Amazonian headwater streams, including deforestation and associated changes to water quality and flow, are the general long-term watch items for a fish with this restricted a known range; no species-specific trade or habitat data beyond the type description was available in the cache used for this article.
