Potamorhina laticeps was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1850, originally under a different generic combination before later authors placed it in Potamorhina, a genus of small-mouthed, detritivorous characins in the family Curimatidae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the current valid combination Potamorhina laticeps (Valenciennes, 1850); this article keeps that genus assignment rather than second-guessing it.
Curimatidae — the genus Potamorhina among them — are characiforms that have lost functional jaw teeth entirely, an adaptation tied to their detritivorous, sediment-sifting feeding style. That places P. laticeps well outside the predatory image most people associate with the piranhas and pacus that share this broader "Piranhas & Pacus" grouping; it is a quiet, toothless grazer, not a biter.
Morphology
FishBase lists a maximum published size of 10 in standard length for Potamorhina laticeps, a mid-sized fish by curimatid standards. The body is deep and laterally compressed with a silvery flank typical of open-water Neotropical schooling characins, and — as the species name laticeps ("broad-headed") suggests — a noticeably wide, blunt head relative to its relatives in the genus.
Like other curimatids, its mouth is small, toothless and set for grazing rather than grasping, and the body plan overall reads as a fast-moving shoaling fish built to cover open water in numbers rather than to ambush or wrestle prey.

Potamorhina laticeps is documented from the Maracaibo Lake basin in Venezuela, confirmed by both FishBase and GBIF occurrence records. The Maracaibo basin is a warm, tropical South American lowland system, and lacking direct measurements for P. laticeps, an estimate in the broad range of roughly 72–79 °F and mildly soft-to-neutral pH (roughly 6.0–7.0) is reasonable for the region generally — but this is inferred from regional conditions, not confirmed for the species, and should be treated as an approximation.
Feeding
