Creagrutus hildebrandi is a small, slender characid from the drainages of the Maracaibo Lake basin and the Gulf of Venezuela, originally described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944 from a holotype collected in the Río Tachira near San Antonio. Reaching around 2.5 in standard length, it inhabits fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams at lower elevations and is representative of the speciose genus Creagrutus — a diverse radiation of bottom-associated characids distributed across northern South America and Central America. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2021, the species is rarely encountered in the hobby but is of interest to those studying the remarkable diversity of Venezuelan river systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Creagrutus hildebrandi was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944, with the holotype (USNM 121482, 2 in SL) collected from the Río Tachira approximately 4 mi north of San Antonio in the Maracaibo basin of Venezuela. The species belongs to the family Characidae as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names; some classification schemes have placed genera within this group under the family Stevardiidae, but the top-level family designation used here follows Catalog of Fishes.

The genus Creagrutus is large and taxonomically complex, encompassing dozens of species distributed from Mexico south through much of northern and western South America. The genus name derives from the Greek roots suggesting the act of tearing or ripping flesh, a reference to the dentition common to many characids. Within Creagrutus, C. hildebrandi is distinguished by a combination of meristic and morphometric characters, though the genus as a whole is in ongoing revision and relationships among species are not fully resolved.

The specific epithet hildebrandi honours Dr Samuel Frederick Hildebrand (1883–1949), an American ichthyologist associated with the United States Bureau of Fisheries and the Smithsonian Institution who made extensive contributions to the study of tropical American fishes.

Morphology

Creagrutus hildebrandi is a small, fusiform characid reaching a reported maximum of 2.5 in standard length. Like other members of the genus, the body is moderately elongate and somewhat laterally compressed, adapted for life near the stream bottom in moving water. The head is moderate in size, with the mouth terminal to subterminal and dentition typical of an omnivorous benthic feeder.

Detailed meristic data for this species in the published literature are limited in accessible sources, and the species lacks a dedicated aquarium-hobby profile that might document coloration in live specimens. The general pattern expected for Creagrutus in this drainage is a silvery to tan body with a lateral stripe or band of varying intensity, darker dorsally and paler ventrally, consistent with the cryptic coloration common across the genus. Sexual dimorphism, if present, is likely subtle and similar to that in allied species.

Habitat

Creagrutus hildebrandi is distributed in the Maracaibo Lake basin and the Gulf of Venezuela drainage, a region encompassing river systems in northwestern Venezuela and adjacent Colombia. The type locality is the Río Tachira, a tributary of the Maracaibo system. FishBase records the species as benthopelagic in freshwater, tropical conditions, found in well-oxygenated, fast-flowing waters and not recorded above approximately 1,0 ft elevation.

The Maracaibo basin is one of the most hydrologically distinctive systems in northern South America, draining into the brackish Lake Maracaibo before connecting to the Gulf of Venezuela and the Caribbean. Streams in the piedmont and foothill zones of this basin where Creagrutus species occur tend to be clear to moderately turbid, with rocky or gravelly substrates, swift currents, and high dissolved oxygen — conditions typical of the benthopelagic microhabitats this genus prefers across its range.

Feeding

FishBase classifies Creagrutus hildebrandi as an omnivore, with the diet centred on benthic invertebrates and small seeds. This feeding profile is consistent with what is known from related Creagrutus species, which typically exploit the benthic invertebrate fauna of stream riffles and runs — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other small organisms found on or near the substrate — supplemented by plant material and organic debris carried by the current.

In captivity, small omnivorous characids of this type generally accept a range of prepared and live foods. A diet including small sinking pellets or granules, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and occasional live foods would be appropriate for captive specimens, though husbandry information specific to this species is sparse in the hobby literature.

Mating

No specific observations of mating behaviour in Creagrutus hildebrandi have been published in accessible sources. On the basis of the biology of the genus and of small omnivorous characids in general, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering, open spawner without parental care — the reproductive strategy that characterises the vast majority of the family Characidae.

Male Creagrutus in related species may develop small hooks on the anal-fin rays, a feature associated with contact behaviour during spawning in many characids. If such structures are present in C. hildebrandi, they would serve as a morphological indicator of sexually mature males and a point of physical contact during the spawning embrace, as documented across a wide range of characid genera.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented for Creagrutus hildebrandi in either the scientific or hobby literature available in the research cache. By analogy with small stream-dwelling characids, spawning would be expected to occur over substrate or fine vegetation, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered in riffles or among plant matter and no subsequent parental guarding or care of either eggs or larvae.

Any aquarist wishing to attempt breeding this species should replicate the conditions of its native streams: clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong flow, a temperature in the tropical range consistent with the Maracaibo lowland climate, and fine-leaved plant matter or spawning mops as a spawning target. Removal of adults after spawning and rearing of eggs and fry separately would be the standard approach for an unguarded egg-scattering characid.

In the aquarium

Creagrutus hildebrandi is essentially absent from the international aquarium hobby and is very unlikely to be encountered in trade. The species has no widely used common name and does not appear to have been kept or bred in captivity in any documented way. Its inclusion in an atlas context serves to document the diversity of the Maracaibo basin's characid fauna rather than to guide hobbyists seeking to acquire it.

If specimens were obtained — for example, by specialist importers working with Venezuelan biotope collections — the appropriate setup would mirror the fast-flowing, well-oxygenated piedmont streams of the Río Tachira system: a river-style aquarium with strong filtration and current, smooth or rounded substrate, open swimming space near the bottom, and water quality consistent with tropical South American foothill streams. As a small benthic omnivore it would be best kept in a species group or with similarly sized, non-competitive tankmates.

Conservation

Creagrutus hildebrandi was assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List in January 2021. The LC rating reflects an absence of evidence of rapid population decline or severe range restriction at a level that would trigger a threatened category, and the Maracaibo basin supports a broad freshwater ichthyofauna. The assessment does not imply that the species is free from localised pressures — Venezuelan river systems face ongoing threats from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and changes in water quality across parts of the Maracaibo drainage.

Because C. hildebrandi is not a species of commercial interest to the ornamental trade and attracts limited scientific attention, population trend data are sparse. The Maracaibo basin as a whole is ecologically significant, and the conservation of fast-flowing tributary streams in the piedmont — the habitat type this species appears to occupy — depends on broader watershed management across the region.
