Taxonomy & naming
Potamorhina latior was described by Johann Baptist von Spix and Louis Agassiz in 1829, part of the wave of Amazonian fish species Agassiz worked up from Spix's Brazilian collections in the early nineteenth century. It sits in the genus Potamorhina, one of several toothless, deep-bodied genera within the family Curimatidae — the curimatas — inside the order Characiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name and combination; nothing in the available sources suggests a recent reclassification of this particular species, unlike the much more heavily revised silver-dollar and pacu lineages elsewhere in the characin order.
Curimatidae as a family is defined largely by what its members lack: none of the roughly 100 described curimatid species have jaw teeth, relying instead on pharyngeal teeth further back in the throat and on mobile, fleshy lips to process food. Potamorhina is one of the more common genera encountered in Amazon fish-community surveys, and P. latior is one of several similar-looking congeners that are best told apart by fin-ray counts and proportions rather than by colour or overall shape.
