Taxonomy & naming
Pseudanos gracilis was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858 as part of his survey of Neotropical characins, based on material collected in the Rio Guaporé system of the Amazon basin; the holotype is held at the Natural History Museum Vienna (NMW 57119). It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family whose members are recognisable by their upward-pointing snouts and habit of feeding at a steep, often near-vertical angle to the substrate.
The genus Pseudanos is a small one, currently holding only a handful of valid species according to the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), distinguished from the larger and better-known headstander genera Leporinus and Anostomus by details of dentition and body proportions. Pseudanos gracilis is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade under a common English name; where dealers do list it, "slender headstander" reflects both the genus's feeding posture and this species' notably elongate build relative to its relatives.
Morphology
True to its species epithet, Pseudanos gracilis has a slender, elongate, torpedo-like body compared with the deeper-bodied headstanders in genera such as Chilodus or Leporinus. FishBase records a maximum size of 7 in standard length, with a more typical total length around 5.5 in — a modest, manageable size within the Anostomidae. The head carries the family's characteristic upturned mouth and steep facial profile, an adaptation for grazing at an oblique, head-down angle rather than feeding horizontally in the water column.
Colouration in the genus is generally a muted silver-to-olive base with darker mottling or banding along the flanks, in keeping with camouflage against submerged wood and leaf litter in fast-flowing forest streams; detailed colour-pattern descriptions and any sexual differences are not well documented for this species and are not asserted here.
Habitat
Pseudanos gracilis is known from the Rio Guaporé, Rio Negro and Orinoco River basins of South America, with its type locality in the Rio Guaporé downstream of Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade, Brazil. Across this range it favours fast-flowing creeks and river margins with crevices among rocks, roots and submerged wood — structure that offers both grazing surface and cover.
FishBase describes the species as tropical, with a temperature range of roughly 75–79 °F, pH up to 7.0, and soft water in the range of 2–8 dH. That combination of moving water, submerged structure and soft, mildly acidic-to-neutral chemistry is consistent with the blackwater and clearwater tributary habitats typical of the wider Rio Negro and Guaporé systems, though detailed site-specific water data for this species specifically is sparse.
Feeding
Pseudanos gracilis is primarily herbivorous, grazing algae and biofilm from submerged wood and rock in its characteristic head-down posture, with occasional invertebrates taken opportunistically. This aufwuchs-grazing lifestyle is shared broadly across the headstanders, though the balance of plant versus animal material varies by genus and species.
In the aquarium, this diet translates to a need for vegetable-forward foods — algae wafers, blanched vegetables, spirulina-based flake or pellet — supplemented with some protein such as small live or frozen invertebrates. As with other grazing Anostomidae, a tank without enough grazing surface or greenery on offer may see a Pseudanos turn its attention to soft-leaved aquarium plants.
Mating
Courtship and pairing behaviour for Pseudanos gracilis is not documented in the sources available for this article. Data is sparse for this species specifically, and no claim is made here about pair formation, spawning triggers or external sexual dimorphism beyond noting that none has been reliably recorded.
Breeding
FishBase notes that pairs of Pseudanos gracilis are reported to spawn over densely vegetated areas, consistent with the egg-scattering strategy seen more broadly across the headstanders — the female releases eggs among plants or fine root mats with no nest construction and no parental care afterward. As with several of its Anostomidae relatives (a few Leporinus and Anostomus species are farmed commercially, though rarely bred by home aquarists), Pseudanos gracilis should be treated as essentially unbred in the hobby; anyone acquiring the species is almost certainly buying a wild-collected fish rather than a captive-bred one.
In the aquarium
At a maximum of around 7 in, Pseudanos gracilis is a manageable size for a dedicated species or community tank, but it should be given plenty of grazing surface — driftwood, rockwork and a healthy biofilm/algae layer — plus vegetable-forward foods to keep it from turning to tender aquarium plants. Strong, oxygenated flow reflecting its fast-flowing native creeks is a sensible target, along with soft, mildly acidic-to-neutral water.
The species is rare in the aquarium trade with limited husbandry documentation, and the honest caveat that applies across its family is worth repeating here: many Anostomidae, including congeners of Pseudanos, are known to be nippy and territorial, especially as they mature, so tankmates should be chosen with that possibility in mind even though Pseudanos gracilis itself is reported as being kept successfully in groups or singly. Given how little is documented, a cautious, watch-and-adjust approach to stocking is warranted rather than assuming the calm behaviour of a typical nano grazer.
Conservation
Pseudanos gracilis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so its conservation status is formally Not Evaluated rather than assessed as safe or threatened. Its known range across the Rio Guaporé, Rio Negro and Orinoco systems spans several countries and a mix of relatively intact and increasingly pressured Amazonian and Orinoco watersheds.
