Taxonomy & naming
Pseudanos trimaculatus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Pseudanos, a small group of oblique, head-down grazers distinguished from the more numerous Leporinus and Anostomus by details of dentition and body proportion. The common name "threespot headstander" refers to the pattern of dark blotches along the flank described below, and "headstander" describes the characteristic oblique, head-down posture the fish adopts while grazing — a trait shared across several genera in this family (Anostomus, Leporinus, Chilodus) but expressed here in a comparatively small-bodied, slender species.
Morphology
The threespot headstander has the elongated, fusiform body typical of Anostomidae, with a body depth and profile built for steady, angled hovering rather than fast open-water swimming. AquaInfo recommends a minimum aquarium length of around 59 in for a proper group.
The species will nip the fins of slow-moving, long-finned tankmates (Seriously Fish), and AquaInfo specifically advises against combining it with other headstanders or with long-finned fish such as angelfish, which are at nipping risk. Suitable tankmates include other characins, armoured catfish, peaceful cichlids and Corydoras. Furnish the tank with sand or fine smooth gravel and sturdy driftwood for grazing surface and cover, and stick to tough-leaved plants (Anubias, Java fern) since anything soft-leaved will be eaten. At a real adult size in the 5–7.5 in range, this is a mid-sized characin, not a true nano fish, and tank dimensions should be planned accordingly.
