Taxonomy & naming
Pseudanos irinae was described by Winterbottom in 1980 from a holotype collected in Venezuela's Amazonas state, at the point where the Río Orinoco bifurcates into the Río Casiquiare — the famous natural canal that links the Orinoco and Amazon drainages. It sits in the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes, in the small genus Pseudanos alongside species such as P. trimaculatus, P. winterbottomi, P. gracilis and P. varii.
A 2012 taxonomic revision of the genus (published in Zootaxa) treated P. irinae as a junior synonym of P. trimaculatus, on the basis that the two share the same overall body plan and range overlap, though the revision itself notes they remain morphologically distinguishable — P. irinae carries a dark spot on each scale where P. trimaculatus shows a lighter one. Because the Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority on valid names and treatments of this kind can be revisited, this article keeps the name Pseudanos irinae as given, while flagging the synonymy for readers who encounter the fish under either name in the literature or the trade.
Morphology
Like other Pseudanos headstanders, P. irinae has an elongated, only moderately compressed body built for grazing rather than open-water swimming, a small subterminal mouth adapted for scraping algae and biofilm from hard surfaces, and the family's characteristic oblique, head-down feeding posture that gives headstanders their common name. FishBase's holotype record lists a standard length of 3 in for the type specimen, and hobby sources give a maximum size of about 5 in standard length for the closely related P. trimaculatus, a reasonable size ceiling for this species as well.
Colouration is the main field character separating P. irinae from its close relatives: each scale carries a dark spot, producing a stippled, speckled pattern along the flanks, in contrast to the lighter scale spots described for P. trimaculatus. Beyond that distinction, detailed morphological data specific to P. irinae is sparse in the available literature.
Habitat
Pseudanos irinae is known from the upper and middle Orinoco basin and the Essequibo River in Guyana, placing it within the Orinoco-Guiana Shield ecoregion complex. This is a landscape of clear and blackwater streams and rivers running through the Guiana Shield, including morichales (palm-lined blackwater streams) and reaches with rapids, cataracts and waterfalls at moderate gradient — fast, well-oxygenated water over rock and submerged wood, exactly the kind of surface a grazing headstander depends on for algae and biofilm.
Specific water-chemistry data for P. irinae itself was not found in the sources consulted; the closely related and better-documented P. trimaculatus is kept and reported around pH 6.0–7.5 and roughly 73–81 °F, figures reasonable to use as a general guide for this species given their shared range and biology, though they should not be taken as a direct field measurement for P. irinae.
Feeding
Pseudanos irinae is a grazer, feeding in the head-down posture typical of headstanders as it works over submerged wood, rock and plant surfaces for algae and biofilm (aufwuchs). Related Pseudanos species are described as primarily herbivorous omnivores that also take small invertebrates picked off the same surfaces, rounding out an otherwise plant-heavy diet.
In the aquarium, closely related Pseudanos are fed a mix of blanched vegetables — spinach, lettuce, cucumber, courgette — alongside algae wafers and occasional live or frozen foods, and the same regime is a sound starting point for P. irinae. Because this genus grazes on soft aquatic plants as readily as it grazes algae, a heavily planted tank should expect some browsing damage unless the fish is well supplied with alternative greens.
Mating
No courtship or spawning description specific to Pseudanos irinae was found in the sources consulted, and breeding of the closely related P. trimaculatus is likewise not reported in the aquarium literature. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented for the genus. Given the sparse data, this account does not speculate on courtship behaviour beyond what other egg-scattering headstanders in the family Anostomidae are known to do — release eggs in open water or over vegetation without pair bonding or nest preparation.
Breeding
As with headstanders generally, Pseudanos irinae is presumed to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care, based on the breeding mode documented across the wider Anostomidae. It is not reported as bred in the aquarium — for the closely related and better-known P. trimaculatus, breeding accounts are absent from the hobby literature, and the same appears true here. Prospective keepers should treat this as a species that is not realistically bred at home and is sustained in the trade through wild collection rather than captive propagation, though direct confirmation of trade sourcing for P. irinae specifically was not found.
In the aquarium
Pseudanos irinae stays a modest size for a characin — around 5 in standard length at most, based on figures for its close relative P. trimaculatus — but it is not an easy community fish. It needs a tank of at least 59 in in length once full grown, sandy substrate, driftwood and rockwork to graze, and strong water flow that mimics the rapids and moderate-gradient streams of its native Orinoco and Essequibo range. Excellent water quality is essential, and a tight-fitting lid is not optional: like other Pseudanos, it is a strong jumper.
Socially, this genus does best kept solitary or in a real group of six or more; small numbers of two to five tend to produce sustained aggression as a hierarchy gets fought out. It will graze soft aquatic plants, so keepers wanting a planted display should stick to tougher, less palatable species or accept some browsing. Given the taxonomic overlap with P. trimaculatus, a keeper shopping for this fish in the trade should expect it may be sold, and may arrive, under either name.
Conservation
Pseudanos irinae has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation status. Its documented range — the upper and middle Orinoco and the Essequibo River in Guyana — lies within the Guiana Shield, a region with comparatively low human disturbance relative to much of South America's tropical lowlands, but the 2012 synonymy with P. trimaculatus complicates any independent assessment of its population trend or trade pressure, since records for the two names have likely been merged or confused in surveys and export data alike. No specific threats were identified in the sources consulted; this is a data-sparse species where the honest position is simply that its status is unknown rather than presumed secure.
