Taxonomy & naming
Rhaphiodon vulpinus was described by the German naturalists Johann Baptist von Spix and Louis Agassiz in 1829, from material collected during Spix's Brazilian expedition of the early nineteenth century, and published in Agassiz's landmark work on the fishes of Brazil. It is the sole species in the genus Rhaphiodon, placed in the family Cynodontidae — the dogtooth or dog characins, a small group of large, predatory, open-water characiforms that also includes the payara genus Hydrolycus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Rhaphiodon vulpinus as the only valid species in its genus, with no subspecies.
The genus and family are often lumped informally with the piranhas and pacus by aquarists because all sit within Characiformes and share a superficial silvery, deep-river look, but Cynodontidae is a distinct, exclusively predatory lineage built around elongate fang-bearing jaws rather than the shearing dentition of Serrasalmidae. The vernacular "peixe cachorro" (Portuguese for "dog fish") and similar names across its range reference the prominent canine-like teeth; English-language sources sometimes call it the freshwater barracuda or pike characin for its shape and hunting style, though it is unrelated to true barracudas or pikes.
Morphology
Rhaphiodon vulpinus has an elongated, laterally compressed, fusiform body built for sustained cruising and bursts of speed — a shape aquarists often compare to a barracuda or a large pike. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 23.5–31.5 in and a maximum published weight of 2.1 kg, and its maturity length (Lm) is recorded at 12.5 in, meaning most individuals encountered are already a substantial size by the time they breed. The head is pointed with a strongly underslung lower jaw carrying long, exposed, dog-like canine teeth in the front of both jaws — the feature behind most of its common names — built for gripping and piercing fast-moving prey rather than shearing chunks from it.
Colouration is countershaded and unremarkable at a glance: bright silver flanks fading to a darker, olive-to-blue-grey back, with a deeply forked, powerful tail fin that marks it as an active, open-water pursuit predator rather than an ambush specialist lurking in cover. The skin and scales are comparatively delicate for the fish's size, a trait repeatedly flagged by hobby sources as a key reason it does poorly outside large, open water — confined spaces and repeated glass contact cause snout and flank damage that the species does not tolerate well.
Habitat
Rhaphiodon vulpinus is native to major river systems across the Amazon basin, with documented occurrences in the Rio Negro, Solimões, Ucayali, Xingu, Tocantins and Rio Capim, among other tributaries and mainstem reaches of the wider Amazon drainage in South America. It is a fish of open, flowing water — main channels and large tributaries rather than still backwaters or heavily vegetated margins — reflecting its role as a pursuit predator that needs room to chase schooling prey fish.
Water across its range runs warm and reflects typical lowland Amazonian river conditions; SeriouslyFish reports a temperature range of roughly 75–82 °F and pH 6.0–8.0 for the species, consistent with the moderately soft-to-neutral, warm water typical of Amazon mainstem and large-tributary habitat. Structurally, what matters most is open swimming space and current — this is not a species associated with dense cover, tight quarters or sluggish, standing water.
Feeding
Rhaphiodon vulpinus is an obligate piscivore — a dedicated fish-eater that pursues and gulps down other fish, often prey of substantial size relative to its own body, using its long canine teeth to seize and hold rather than shear. In the wild it hunts schooling characins and other river fish in open water, relying on speed and a streamlined body to run down prey rather than ambushing from cover.
Where the species is kept in large public-aquarium or research settings, juveniles typically require live fish to begin feeding, and only some individuals can be transitioned onto dead fish or fish flesh with patience; strictly carnivorous, fish-based diets are essential, and any tankmate small enough to be swallowed should be assumed to be food rather than company. Anyone encountering claims of home-bred Rhaphiodon vulpinus should treat them with scepticism absent documented evidence.
In the aquarium
Rhaphiodon vulpinus is, bluntly, not a home aquarium fish. Adults reach up to roughly 31.5 in standard length and need a large volume of genuinely open water to swim in a straight line without turning; even large domestic tanks cannot come close to replicating that. Multiple hobby and retail sources describe it as nervous and prone to injuring its snout and flanks against glass or hard décor when confined, a direct consequence of its thin skin and its instinct to flee in a straight line when startled — behaviour that is fatal or severely damaging in anything short of an enormous, obstruction-free system.
Where the species does appear in captivity, it is almost always in large public aquaria or research facilities with pools large enough to allow sustained swimming, dim lighting to reduce panic reactions, and strictly piscine diets fed as live or fresh fish. It is strictly predatory and will treat any tankmate it can engulf as food. For the overwhelming majority of aquarists, the honest recommendation is to admire this species in its native rivers or in public aquaria rather than attempt to keep it at home.
