Taxonomy & naming
Rhytiodus elongatus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1908, originally as Leporinus elongatus. It was later transferred to Rhytiodus, a small genus of headstanders within the family Anostomidae (order Characiformes) that the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as the current valid placement for the species. The historical Leporinus combination still turns up in older literature and in some genetic and fisheries papers discussing economically important characins of the Paraná and La Plata basins, so readers may encounter both names depending on the source's age.
Anostomidae is a family defined largely by its head-down, oblique grazing posture — the family name itself references the upturned mouth many members share — and Rhytiodus is one of several genera in that family, alongside Leporinus, Leporellus and Anostomus, that share this distinctive feeding stance. As with much of this family, taxonomic revisions have moved species between genera more than once, and the current Rhytiodus placement should be treated as the standing valid combination per Catalog of Fishes rather than a fixed, uncontested fact.
Morphology
True to its species name, Rhytiodus elongatus has a notably elongated, torpedo-shaped body compared to the deeper-bodied Leporinus species it is sometimes confused with historically. A measured museum specimen (MZUSP 87883, from the Rio Pardo) reached 6 in standard length, consistent with an adult size in the range of roughly 6 in SL — modest for the family, and far short of the sizes some of its Anostomidae relatives attain. FishBase does not give a confirmed maximum length for this species specifically, though a close congener, Rhytiodus argenteofuscus, is recorded at around 12.5 in, so some individuals of R. elongatus may run larger than the single measured specimen suggests.
Like other Rhytiodus and Leporinus species, it has a slightly subterminal, oblique mouth suited to grazing at an angle rather than a forward-facing predatory mouth, and a streamlined, laterally compact body built for steady cruising over algae-covered surfaces rather than bursts of predatory speed.
Habitat
FishBase places Rhytiodus elongatus in the Purus River basin of Brazil, a major Amazon tributary, describing the species as freshwater and benthopelagic — occupying the water column near the bottom rather than lying flat on the substrate or ranging into open water. A separate genetic study references the historical name "Leporinus elongatus" as an economically important species in the Paraná and La Plata river basins, a considerably different part of South America from the Purus; whether this reflects a genuinely wide range, a taxonomic mix-up with a similarly named species, or simply patchy sampling of the true distribution is not resolved in the available sources, and this account is deliberately non-committal about the full extent of its range.
FishBase also describes the species as subtropical, which fits the cooler-running Paraná connection better than a purely equatorial Amazon distribution. Feeding

As with its relatives in Anostomidae — several Leporinus and Anostomus species are well known as nippy, territorial fish that can damage the fins of tankmates as they mature — a prospective keeper should be cautious about mixing this species with slow-moving or long-finned tankmates until its temperament is better documented. Because it is herbivore-leaning, it may also graze on soft aquarium plants. This is not a piranha-family predator and should not be marketed or expected to behave like one; it is a grazing characin whose day-to-day biology in captivity remains largely unrecorded.
