Taxonomy & naming

Rhytiodus lauzannei was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1987. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Rhytiodus, a small group of elongate, oblique-grazing characins that the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as distinct from the better-known Leporinus and Anostomus lineages in the same family.

The genus Rhytiodus currently holds only a handful of valid species — R. lauzannei, R. microlepis and R. argenteofuscus among them — and R. lauzannei is the more narrowly distributed of the group, known from the Tijamuchi and Mamoré river basins in Bolivia, with its type locality on the Rio Mamoré. Its relatives R. microlepis and R. argenteofuscus are somewhat larger-bodied herbivorous headstanders with broadly similar weedy-habitat preferences, and the genus name itself reflects the group's characteristic dentition and grazing habit, discussed further below.

Morphology

Like other members of its genus, Rhytiodus lauzannei has the elongate, laterally compressed, torpedo-like body typical of headstanders — a shape built for holding a steady, angled position against current while grazing rather than for sudden bursts of speed. FishBase records a maximum size of 10 in standard length for the species, a modest figure compared to some of its bulkier anostomid cousins, but still a fish that needs real swimming room as an adult.
