Rhytiodus microlepis is a slender, silver headstander from the Amazon basin that spends much of its day tilted nose-down, grazing algae and biofilm off submerged wood and leaves at a steep, almost vertical angle. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the true headstanders, whose members occupy the same aufwuchs-grazing niche that Chilodus and the true "spotted headstanders" fill at a smaller scale, but Rhytiodus itself grows to a real adult size — a foot or more — that outstrips the tank most first-time keepers have in mind. It is a peaceable, plant-nibbling grazer rather than a fin-nipper, and its story in the aquarium is less about danger and more about giving an active, herbivorous shoaler enough room and enough greens.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhytiodus microlepis was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858. It sits in the genus Rhytiodus, a small group of headstanders within the family Anostomidae (order Characiformes), which also contains the well-known Leporinus and Anostomus lineages as well as the smaller-bodied Chilodus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name and combination; nothing in the available sources suggests a pending revision for this species, and it is consistently treated under Rhytiodus microlepis in the modern literature.

The species epithet microlepis is Greek for "small scale," a reference to the fine, small scales covering the body — a useful field character separating Rhytiodus from coarser-scaled anostomids. Within the aquarium trade the fish is generally sold simply as the silver headstander, and it is far less commonly seen than the popular striped Anostomus or banded Leporinus species.

Morphology

Rhytiodus microlepis has an elongated, laterally compressed body typical of the headstander group, with a small, downward-angled mouth adapted for grazing rather than gripping prey. FishBase records a maximum size of 13 in standard length, making this a substantially larger fish than the diminutive Chilodus species often marketed alongside it — a distinction worth stating plainly, since "headstander" in the trade covers everything from a 2.5 in nano grazer to a fish approaching a foot long.

Colouration is understated: a silvery body, often with a faint golden or olive cast along the back, and fins that are typically clear to lightly dusky. The small scales referenced in the species name give the flanks a fine, even texture rather than the bold banding seen in Anostomus. As in most anostomids, the fish is usually seen holding an oblique, head-down posture in the water column while grazing, righting itself to a more normal orientation when swimming actively.

Habitat

The species is native to the Amazon River basin, where it has been documented in floodplain lakes and river channels; ontogeny and digestive-morphology studies specifically describe Amazonian floodplain-lake populations. Data on the exact countries and sub-drainages within the vast Amazon system are sparse in the sources reviewed here, so the range given below should be read as "Amazon basin" broadly rather than a precise checklist of countries.

Digestive-morphology research on this species found a gut clearly built for a bulky plant-based diet: an oesophagus adapted to lubricate and resist friction from fibrous vegetable matter, a U-shaped stomach rich in gastric glands capable of handling a large volume of food, and an intestine that makes up more than 70% of the total length of the digestive tract — a classic herbivore's gut architecture.

In the aquarium this translates directly to diet: the fish should get a vegetable-forward menu — blanched vegetables, spirulina-based flakes or pellets, and algae wafers — supplemented with only modest amounts of protein. Soft-leaved aquarium plants are at real risk from a hungry Rhytiodus, so keepers who want a planted setup should choose tough, unpalatable species (Anubias, Java fern, Vallisneria) over anything soft and fast-growing.

Mating

FishBase notes that Rhytiodus microlepis breeds in distinct pairs in densely vegetated, weedy areas, but detailed courtship behaviour — colour changes, chasing, site selection specifics — is not documented in the sources reviewed here. As with most anostomids, there is no reported external sexual dimorphism that reliably distinguishes males from females outside of spawning condition, where a gravid female may simply appear fuller-bodied.

Breeding

Like most headstanders, Rhytiodus microlepis is understood to be an egg-scatterer that pairs off over dense vegetation to spawn, based on the pairing behaviour FishBase describes, rather than a nest-guarder or mouthbrooder. It is rarely, if ever, bred in home aquaria — the available sources describe wild reproductive ecology and early ontogeny (a 2024 study followed larvae and juveniles from 0.5–3 in SL in Amazon basin populations) rather than any hobbyist or commercial breeding protocol, and no parental care beyond egg deposition in cover is reported. Prospective keepers should treat this as a species that is essentially wild-collected or wild-farmed for the trade rather than tank-bred.

In the aquarium

The headline fact for a keeper is size: at up to roughly 13 in SL, Rhytiodus microlepis is a substantially larger, more active fish than the small "spotted headstanders" (Chilodus) it sometimes shares a shelf with, and it needs a long, spacious aquarium — think several hundred litres for a full-grown specimen — not a standard community tank. It is an active midwater-to-bottom grazer, often seen at its characteristic head-down angle picking at wood, rocks and leaf litter, and it does best kept in a small group rather than alone, since solitary anostomids can become skittish or, less often, territorial toward tankmates.

Because it is fundamentally a grazer with a gut built for bulk vegetable matter, offer it a diet dominated by blanched greens, spirulina and algae-based foods, and expect it to sample soft aquarium plants — plan the planting scheme accordingly. It is not reported as a notable fin-nipper in the way some Leporinus can be, but as with any large, active shoaling characin, undercrowding, undersized tanks or an all-protein diet are the more realistic risks to watch for rather than aggression.

Conservation

Rhytiodus microlepis is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, consistent with FishBase's record of a 2020 assessment. This reflects its broad occurrence across Amazon basin floodplain and river habitats and the absence of documented range-wide population decline. As with many Amazonian floodplain fish, the longer-term watch items are the general pressures on that system — damming, deforestation-driven sedimentation and floodplain habitat change — rather than any species-specific threat identified in the available sources.
