Roestes molossus is a pike-shaped, night-hunting characin of the upper Madeira River basin in Brazil, built for pursuing prey through submerged litter banks rather than for life behind glass. It reaches a modest 8.5 in standard length — far short of the giant payara (Hydrolycus) it is sometimes lumped with in the trade — but it shares the family's fragile skin, nervous temperament and strictly piscivorous appetite. Almost nothing has been documented about keeping or breeding this species in captivity; what follows is a species that is well described taxonomically and ecologically, and almost entirely undescribed as an aquarium fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Roestes molossus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858. It belongs to the genus Roestes, a small group of slender, predatory characins historically placed in the family Cynodontidae but currently recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) within Acestrorhynchidae, the pike-characin family, alongside the more familiar Acestrorhynchus and the true cynodontids such as Hydrolycus and Rhaphiodon. Older literature — including some ecological papers on this species — refers to it under the earlier family placement, Cynodontidae; that combination should be read as historical rather than current.

The species is distinguished from its congeners by fin-ray and vertebral counts: an anal fin of 43–47 soft rays, 11 dorsal soft rays and 40 vertebrae are the characters cited in the taxonomic literature to separate it from other Roestes. It is a poorly known fish outside specialist ichthyology and the aquarium trade essentially does not carry it, so there is no established common or trade name to report.

Roestes molossus has the streamlined, laterally compact, torpedo-like body typical of the pike-characin lineage: an elongated profile built for a fast pursuit strike rather than for manoeuvring, with a pointed head and a mouth armed with the sharp, interlocking dentition characteristic of predatory characiforms. The species is native to South America and is documented from the upper Madeira River basin in Brazil, a major tributary system of the Amazon. Given its confirmed adult size of roughly 8.5 in and piscivorous, nocturnal hunting habit, any tankmates would need to be robust, too large to be eaten, and comfortable with a fish that feeds after dark. Absent real husbandry data, this species is best regarded as one for specialist or research collections rather than the general trade.
