Named for the Caxarar people who once inhabited the lowlands of the Rio Guaporé, Otocinclus caxarari is a thumb-sized grazer from the upper Madeira basin — one of the dwarf loricariids that earns its keep through tireless microalgae patrol rather than impressive stature.

Taxonomy & naming

Otocinclus caxarari was described by Scott A. Schaefer in 1997 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 148, pp. 71, figs. 44 and 49b). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Otocinclus caxarari Schaefer, 1997 as a valid species. The type locality is given as between Guajará-Mirim and Mato Grosso, at approximately 10°48′S, 65°23′W, in the upper Madeira / Rio Guaporé basin on the Brazil–Bolivia border.

The genus name Otocinclus combines the Greek ous/otos (ear) with the Latin cinclus (latticework), referring to the perforated or latticed bones of the head near the ear region — a structural character of the subfamily. The species epithet caxarari honours the Caxarar, an indigenous people who historically inhabited lowland regions of the Rio Guaporé southwest of Porto Velho, Brazil.

The hobbyist community knows this species under the common name 'Wave Striped Oto', reflecting the undulating mid-lateral stripe. In Danish it circulates as Bølgestribet Dværgsugemalle ('wave-striped dwarf sucker catfish').

Otocinclus belongs to the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, the most speciose of the small, armoured sucker catfish lineages within Loricariidae. The genus comprises more than twenty valid species of diminutive grazers distributed widely across South America.

Morphology

Otocinclus caxarari is a tiny catfish, reaching only about 1 in standard length (SL) — making it one of the smallest members of an already small genus. The body is slender, somewhat cylindrical, and covered in the lightweight bony scutes characteristic of the subfamily, though these are less massive than those of the larger Hypostominae. The ventral sucker mouth is small and finely toothed, adapted for scraping thin biofilm and soft algae from plant leaves, rocks, and other smooth surfaces rather than rasping hard wood.

Coloration is characterised by a bold mid-lateral stripe that runs from behind the eye to the base of the caudal fin with a wave or undulating edge — the feature behind the 'wave striped' common name. A pale ventral surface contrasts with the darker dorsal and lateral ground colour. The caudal fin often bears dark spotting or a caudal spot.

Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern typical of Otocinclus: females are visibly larger and broader-bodied than males, particularly when viewed from above, and this difference becomes most pronounced when females are carrying eggs. Males are more slender.

Habitat

The type locality — between Guajará-Mirim and the Mato Grosso state border, in the vicinity of 10°48′S, 65°23′W — places O. caxarari in the upper Madeira River basin, specifically within the Rio Guaporé drainage along the Brazil–Bolivia border. This is a lowland Amazonian region of warm, seasonally flooded rivers and associated gallery forest.

Otocinclus species are characteristically found in shallow, well-lit, vegetated marginal habitats: the inner bends of slow-moving streams, flooded meadow edges, and backwaters where aquatic macrophytes, submerged stems, and overhanging bank vegetation provide both food (biofilm, periphyton, soft algae) and shelter from predators. Water in the upper Madeira basin is typically warm and soft to moderately soft, with slightly acidic to neutral pH, though the Guaporé drainage carries relatively clear, dark water in drier periods.

No direct water-parameter measurements from O. caxarari collection localities have been published.

Feeding

Otocinclus caxarari is a specialised micro-grazer — an aufwuchs feeder that lives on the thin films of microalgae, diatoms, and biofilm that coat plant leaves, rock surfaces, and fine substrate. The small, finely toothed mouth is precisely adapted to this niche: it can clean the soft green and brown algae from the surfaces of delicate plant leaves without damaging them, a trait that has made the genus popular in planted aquariums.

Unlike the wood-rasping loricariids (Panaque, Panaqolus) or the heavier algae-scrapers (Hypostomus), Otocinclus cannot efficiently process hard algae films, tough vegetable matter, or protein-rich foods as a dietary staple. In the aquarium, supplementary feeding with high-quality algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched soft vegetables (zucchini, cucumber) helps prevent nutritional deficiencies, particularly when tank algae is sparse. The species grazes almost constantly during active periods.

Mating

Mating behaviour in Otocinclus follows the pattern documented for other members of the genus, particularly the well-studied O. affinis and O. vittatus. Males pursue and follow females closely in the period leading up to spawning, repeatedly nudging the female's abdomen and flanks in what has been described as a T-position courtship. The male's slender body and comparative agility make prolonged following possible even in planted aquariums with obstacles.

Gravid females in breeding condition are conspicuously wider than males when viewed from above. No specific mating behaviour observations have been published for O. caxarari itself, but given the conservative reproductive biology of the genus, the general Otocinclus pattern is the appropriate reference.

Breeding

Otocinclus are scatter-spawners, depositing small adhesive eggs individually or in small clusters on plant leaves, the aquarium glass, fine-leaved vegetation, or other smooth surfaces — a mode quite different from the cave-brooding loricariids. Parental care is absent after spawning; eggs are left to develop without guarding.

No specific breeding reports for O. caxarari are on record at PlanetCatfish. The genus as a whole is considered one of the more challenging loricariids to breed in captivity, largely because the small, scattered eggs and larvae are difficult to raise, and because the adults require excellent water quality and stable conditions to come into breeding condition. In species where captive breeding has been achieved, slight temperature variation (a modest cooling followed by warming to simulate seasonal change), combined with regular water changes and a biofilm-rich environment, has been used to condition fish.

Fry of Otocinclus are very small at hatching and require the finest foods — infusoria, commercial first-fry foods, or dense biofilm — to survive the first weeks.

In the aquarium

Otocinclus caxarari is part of a genus that has become a staple of the planted aquarium hobby, valued for its small size and gentle grazing habits. At a maximum of 1 in SL, it is among the tiniest loricariids, and must be kept with this in mind: all tankmates should be of a size and temperament that pose no threat to a fish under 1 in.

Otocinclus are shoaling fish by nature and should not be kept singly. A group of six or more is the minimum for good welfare; the fish are visibly more active, confident, and display natural foraging behaviour when in a group. A well-established planted tank of 10 US gal or more, with a healthy covering of soft green algae on plant leaves and glass, is an ideal environment. Bare or sterile tanks are stressful: the species depends on continuous access to biofilm and soft algae.

Water quality must be high. Otocinclus are sensitive to ammonia, nitrite, and elevated nitrate, and they are among the fish most commonly lost in the first days after purchase due to the combined stress of collection, transport, and introduction to a new tank. Established, stable tanks with mature biological filtration, good oxygenation, and regular partial water changes (approximately 20–30% weekly) suit them well. Temperature in the range of approximately 72–81 °F, soft to moderately hard water, and neutral to slightly acidic pH reflects their origin in the upper Madeira basin.

Compatible tankmates include small, peaceful mid-water fish (small tetras, rasboras, pygmy Corydoras) and invertebrates (dwarf shrimp are generally safe). Aggressive or fin-nipping species must be avoided. The species is an excellent companion for Corydoras in planted community tanks.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Otocinclus caxarari as Least Concern in October 2020, citing no evidence of major declines. The species' range within the upper Madeira / Guaporé basin does not appear to be under immediate targeted pressure.

The upper Madeira drainage and Rio Guaporé basin have faced pressures from deforestation and agricultural expansion in parts of the Mato Grosso and Rondônia states of Brazil. Otocinclus more broadly are collected in significant numbers for the ornamental trade across South America — the genus represents one of the most widely exported groups of loricariids — though no specific export pressure data for O. caxarari is available. The species is not known to be captive-bred at commercial scale.

The Caxarar indigenous people, for whom the species was named, are associated with the Guaporé valley, a region of significant cultural and ecological importance in southwest Amazonia.
