It belongs to Parodontidae, the parodontid "scrapers," a family built around a distinctive underslung, sucker-like mouth adapted for rasping algae and biofilm off rocks in current. Reaching under 6.5 in, it is a modest, unglamorous fish next to its piranha and pacu relatives, but it is a genuinely interesting example of how varied the non-tetra characins are: not every fish in this group is a predator or a giant. Taxonomy & naming

Saccodon dariensis was described by Seth Eugene Meek and Samuel Frederick Hildebrand in 1913, from material collected in the Darién region of eastern Panama that gives the species its epithet. It sits in the genus Saccodon within the family Parodontidae — the parodontids, a small family of South and Central American characins characterised by a highly modified, ventrally positioned mouth used for scraping algae and periphyton from stones in flowing water, a niche broadly comparable to the algae-eating loaches and plecos of other continents' rivers, though the two groups are not closely related.

Parodontidae sits within the order Characiformes, well outside the piranha-and-pacu family Serrasalmidae that dominates this group's more famous members; parodontids are grouped here editorially among the "Hemiodus & minor characins" because, like the hemiodontids and curimatids, they are small-to-medium, algae- and detritus-grazing river characins rather than predators or food fish. Morphology

Saccodon dariensis is a small, elongate, laterally compressed characin, reaching a documented maximum of 6.5 in standard length. Like other parodontids it carries the family's signature feature: a subterminal, underslung mouth with a hardened, spatulate lower jaw edge used to scrape algae and biofilm from submerged rock surfaces, an adaptation that gives the fish a distinctly different head profile from the blunt, jawed mouths of piranhas or the small terminal mouths of tetras.

Habitat

Diet in captivity should lean heavily on algae — its dominant wild food — supplemented with vegetable matter, dry foods and occasional insect larvae; this is an algae-scraper first, and it should not be treated as an omnivorous scavenger like many piranhas or pacus. At under 6.5 in it poses none of the outgrowing-the-tank problems that plague pacus or wolf fish, but its need for strong current, a real group and a long, open aquascape make it a specialist rather than a beginner fish, and its scarcity in the trade means suitable specimens may be hard to source at all.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Saccodon dariensis as Least Concern, most recently reflected in the 2022 Red List update, consistent with FishBase's Least Concern classification. This reflects a moderately wide native range spanning eastern Panama and the Atrato and Magdalena basins of Colombia, without evidence in the sources reviewed of the population declines or major localized threats that would elevate its risk category.
