Taxonomy & naming
Saccodon terminalis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Arthur W. Henn in 1914, part of the wave of Ecuadorian and Peruvian freshwater fish descriptions Eigenmann produced from Indiana University's Pacific-coast survey expeditions in the early twentieth century. It belongs to the genus Saccodon, one of a small handful of genera in the family Parodontidae — the "scrapetooth" or "scraper" characins — a family recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) as distinct from the pacus, silver dollars and true piranhas of Serrasalmidae that dominate the rest of this "Hemiodus & minor characins" grouping.
Parodontidae is a small, specialised family of algae-grazing characins restricted to Andean and Neotropical piedmont streams, and Saccodon terminalis is one of the more range-restricted members, known only from Pacific-slope river systems in Ecuador. As with much of this genus, the species has attracted little taxonomic revision since its original description, and no synonyms or major nomenclatural disputes are documented in the sources consulted for this article.
Morphology
Saccodon terminalis is a genuinely small fish: FishBase records a maximum size of only about 1.5 in standard length, making it one of the smallest characins covered anywhere in this atlas. Like other Parodontidae, it has an elongated, subcylindrical body built for holding position against current rather than for open-water cruising, and a distinctive underslung, spoon-shaped mouth adapted for scraping algae and biofilm from rock surfaces rather than for grasping prey or fruit.
The genus name Saccodon and the broader family trait of a specialised scraping dentition set it apart from every other genus in this group — it shares none of the deep-bodied, blade-toothed build of a piranha, the barrel shape of a pacu, or the laterally flattened disc of a silver dollar. Habitat
Saccodon terminalis is endemic to Ecuador, restricted to Pacific-slope drainages that run from the Andes down toward the Pacific coast — part of a broader Saccodon distribution that spans Pacific-slope rivers from southern Panama to northwestern Peru, of which this species occupies the Ecuadorian portion. It lives in fast-current, rocky streams, the classic habitat for scraping Parodontidae, where it uses its pectoral fins to help hold station on the substrate while it grazes.
Specific temperature and pH readings for this species were not captured in the sources reviewed here. Ecuadorian Andean foothill and piedmont streams of the kind Saccodon inhabits typically run cool to warm and soft to moderately mineralised with a near-neutral to slightly acidic pH, but that is a regional generalisation rather than a measured value for this species, and it should be treated as indicative only.

Saccodon terminalis is an algae-and-biofilm grazer, not a predator, an omnivore, or a fruit-and-seed feeder like many of its larger relatives in this group. Its biology nonetheless gives some clues to what it would need if ever offered: given its wild habitat, a would-be keeper should expect this to be a small, current-loving rock-grazer rather than a community fish in the conventional sense, needing strong flow, well-oxygenated water and algae-covered hardscape to graze — closer in spirit to a hillstream loach or an otocinclus than to anything else in this "Piranhas & Pacus" atlas.
Because husbandry data is genuinely absent, this section should not be read as a care guide; it is a statement of what is known (very little) rather than a recommendation. There is no legal-restriction concern here as there is with true piranhas, and no size-outgrowing risk as there is with pacus — at 1.5 in this is among the smallest fish in the entire characin order — but the flip side is that nobody has documented how to keep it well.
