Taxonomy & naming
Saccodon wagneri was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1863. It sits in the genus Saccodon within the family Parodontidae, a small Neotropical family of streamlined, algae-grazing characiforms that is only distantly related to the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars of Serrasalmidae covered elsewhere in this group — the two families share the broader characin order (Characiformes) but little else in body plan, diet or behaviour.
GBIF records the species' taxonomic placement as Saccodon wagneri Kner, 1863 within Characiformes, and current usage (FishBase, GBIF) treats the combination as valid with no indication of a recent generic transfer. As with many small, range-restricted Andean and coastal-Ecuadorian characins, published taxonomic and biological data on S. wagneri are sparse compared with its larger, more economically or aquaristically prominent relatives.
Morphology
Saccodon wagneri is a modestly sized, elongate characin. FishBase gives a maximum size of 4 in standard length for males and unsexed individuals, while a regional account of the fishes of western Ecuador records a maximum total length of about 6 in — a reasonable spread once the SL/TL conversion and typical tail-fin length are accounted for. Either figure describes a small fish, well short of the aquarium-notable serrasalmids in this group.
The species carries a black-tipped adipose fin, a useful field mark, and shows an ontogenetic colour shift: juveniles display a midlateral stripe with dark blotches along the flank, while older fish darken overall and the juvenile pattern becomes less distinct. Most distinctively, Saccodon wagneri shows dental polymorphism — variation in tooth form within the species — that is understood as an adaptation for its specialised diet of algae scraped from rock surfaces, a feeding mode shared with other parodontids.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Guayas River drainage of western Ecuador, a coastal Pacific-slope system, and does not range into the Amazon basin. A dedicated regional account (Freshwater Fishes of Western Ecuador, DePaul University) places it in fast-flowing, rocky rivers above roughly 328 ft elevation, where it forms tight schools — behaviour consistent with a fish adapted to hold position and forage in current rather than the sluggish floodplain habitats favoured by many lowland characins.
Detailed water-chemistry data (pH, hardness, precise temperature range) were not captured in the sources reviewed for this article; broadly, fast, well-oxygenated, rocky Andean-foothill and coastal-Ecuadorian streams run cooler and harder than classic Amazon blackwater, but specific figures for this species should be treated as data sparse pending a dedicated source.
Feeding
Saccodon wagneri is a specialised algae grazer, not an omnivore or predator. The DePaul University account describes it feeding on algae attached to rocks in its fast-flowing home rivers, and links this directly to the species' polymorphic, scraper-adapted dentition — teeth shaped to rasp a biofilm layer from hard substrate rather than to seize prey or crush seeds and fruit.
This diet places Saccodon squarely with the other Parodontidae, a family whose whole ecological niche is built around grazing periphyton in fast water, and sets it apart from the omnivorous or outright predatory feeding strategies seen elsewhere in this "Piranhas & Pacus" group.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour for Saccodon wagneri was found in the sources reviewed for this article. Data sparse: nothing in the cached FishBase, GBIF, IUCN or regional-account material describes pairing, spawning triggers or site selection for this species, and no claim is made here beyond what those sources report.
Breeding
Saccodon wagneri is not known to be bred in the aquarium hobby, and no description of its reproductive mode — egg-scattering, nest-building or otherwise — was found in the available sources. Given its placement in Parodontidae, a family with no history of aquarium propagation and little dedicated reproductive research, the honest position is that its breeding biology is effectively undocumented in the material reviewed here; this article does not assign it a breeding mode it cannot support.
In the aquarium
Saccodon wagneri is not an aquarium fish in any meaningful sense — it does not appear in the ornamental trade, and no hobby husbandry accounts were found. Its known ecology nonetheless suggests what a hypothetical keeper would need to replicate: a large, well-oxygenated, current-swept, rocky-bottomed setup with cool-to-moderate temperatures and a school of tankmates, functioning more like a hillstream-loach or fast-water algae-eater setup than a typical characin tank.
Because it is a specialised rock-algae grazer rather than a flake- or pellet-feeder, and because so little is documented about it in captivity, this species should be regarded as unsuitable for the general hobby and is included here for taxonomic completeness rather than as a care recommendation.
Conservation
Saccodon wagneri is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. As a range-restricted endemic of the Guayas River drainage, its conservation outlook is nonetheless tied closely to the health of that single coastal-Ecuadorian system — deforestation, water abstraction and pollution pressures affecting western Ecuadorian rivers are the relevant long-term watch items for a species with nowhere else to go, even though it is not currently classified as threatened.
The species is not targeted by the aquarium trade or documented fisheries in the sources reviewed here, so collection pressure does not appear to be a driver of its status.
