Taxonomy & naming
Schizodon fasciatus was described by Johann Baptist von Spix and Louis Agassiz in 1829, part of the same expedition-era body of work that produced many of the first scientific descriptions of Amazonian fishes. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the toothed headstanders, within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Schizodon, a group of elongate, banded headstanders distinguished from the closely related Leporinus by details of dentition and body proportions. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) and GBIF both list Schizodon fasciatus as a currently valid name with no recent synonymy, and taxonomic sources consulted here show no revision to the genus placement.
The genus name Schizodon derives from Greek roots meaning "split tooth," a reference to the distinctive, notched dentition used to scrape algae and plant material from submerged surfaces. The species epithet fasciatus is Latin for "banded" or "striped," describing the dark vertical bars along the flanks that give the fish its common name.
Morphology
Schizodon fasciatus has the classic anostomid body plan: an elongate, laterally compressed, torpedo-like shape with a small, terminal-to-slightly-inferior mouth adapted for grazing rather than seizing prey. The flanks carry a series of dark, oblique bars or bands against a silvery ground colour, which fade and shift somewhat with age and mood but remain the species' most reliable field mark. FishBase records a maximum published length of 15.5 in total length for the species, a size that puts it well beyond the "small tetra-like fish" impression its narrow juvenile profile can give.
The genus name itself points to the animal's most distinctive anatomical feature — a notched, scraper-like dentition suited to rasping algae, biofilm and soft plant tissue from hard surfaces. Fins are unremarkable and characin-typical, without the elaborate extensions seen in some other Anostomidae; the overall impression is of a fast, streamlined, schooling grazer built for moving water.
Habitat
The species is native to the upper Amazon River basin and to coastal river drainages of French Guiana, per FishBase distribution data. Within that range it occupies flowing freshwater habitats — river channels and associated floodplain and vegetated margins — consistent with its gregarious, potamodromous (river-migratory) habits; FishBase notes the species undergoes seasonal migration, a common pattern among Amazonian characins that track the flood pulse to feeding and spawning grounds.
Water across its range runs warm and mildly acidic to neutral: FishBase gives a habitat range of roughly 72–82 °F and pH 5.5–7.5, typical of tropical Amazonian freshwater rather than extreme blackwater conditions. The species is generally found associating with vegetated, weedy margins and structure, which double as feeding grounds for its algae- and plant-grazing habit and as shelter for the shoal.
Feeding
Schizodon fasciatus is predominantly a grazer, feeding head-down at an oblique angle on algae, biofilm, plant debris and leaf material rasped from rocks, wood and submerged vegetation. FishBase describes the species as a strict herbivore in some accounts and as taking a broader omnivorous mix of plant material in others, but the consistent thread across sources is a plant-and-detritus-based diet rather than a predatory one; it will also take fallen fruit and other plant matter typical of Amazonian floodplain feeding during high water.
In the aquarium this translates to a vegetable-forward diet: blanched vegetables, spirulina- or algae-based flake and pellet foods, and softer aquarium plants, which the fish will graze given the chance. Occasional protein — frozen or live invertebrate foods — rounds out the diet but should not dominate it, matching the species' herbivore-leaning biology in the wild.
Mating
FishBase reports that Schizodon fasciatus breeds as distinct pairs in densely vegetated, weedy habitat, with males maturing at around 7 in and females at around 8.5 in. Beyond this pairing behaviour and size-at-maturity data, published detail on courtship displays or sexual dimorphism is sparse; no reliable external colour or fin differences between the sexes are documented in the sources reviewed here.
As with many wild-collected Anostomidae, most individuals in the aquarium trade are unsexed and undifferentiated externally, and hobbyist accounts of deliberate pairing or spawning triggers in home aquaria are limited.
Breeding
Headstanders in this genus are egg-scatterers, and Schizodon fasciatus is rarely, if ever, bred in home aquaria. FishBase's account of paired spawning in dense weedy cover in the wild describes natural reproduction rather than a documented aquarium protocol, and there is no parental care associated with this reproductive mode — eggs are released and fertilised over vegetation and left unguarded. Some related Leporinus and Anostomus species are reported bred occasionally by hobbyists or produced at small commercial scale, but the sources available for Schizodon fasciatus specifically do not document successful home spawns.
Prospective keepers should treat this as a species maintained from wild or farmed juvenile stock rather than one that is realistically bred out in the home aquarium.
In the aquarium
The single most important planning fact for this species is its adult size: 15.5 in total length is a large fish that needs a correspondingly large, long aquarium, not the compact planted setups its slim juvenile shape is sometimes sold for. Like many of its Leporinus and Anostomus relatives, headstanders of this type can become territorial and are capable of fin-nipping as they mature, so tankmates should be robust, similarly sized, and not delicate long-finned fish. Its herbivorous grazing habit also means it will happily browse soft aquarium plants, so keepers wanting a heavily planted tank should either choose tough, unpalatable species or expect grazing damage.
Given its potamodromous, schooling wild behaviour, the species likely does best kept in a small group in a spacious, well-filtered tank with strong water movement mimicking flowing river habitat, warm temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s°C, and mildly acidic to neutral water chemistry per its native range. As with most large, plant-grazing characins, feed a vegetable-heavy diet and expect a long-lived, active, mid-water fish rather than a passive community occupant.
Conservation
Schizodon fasciatus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, consistent with its wide distribution across the upper Amazon basin and French Guiana coastal drainages and the absence of documented major range-wide threats. No specific population trend or localized pressure data were found in the sources reviewed here.
As a widespread Amazonian river fish, it likely faces the same general long-term watch items as other characins in the region — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation and water-quality change along its river systems — though none of these are noted as current threats to the species' overall conservation status.
