Ceratobranchia binghami was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1927 on the basis of material from the upper Amazon basin. The genus Ceratobranchia belongs to the family Stevardiidae within the broader order Characiformes, though the top-level family designation used here follows Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS), which remains the authority for valid names in the group. The type specimen is deposited at the Harvard University Museum of Comparative Zoology.
The genus Ceratobranchia is characterised by modifications to the gill arches, a feature encoded in the generic name. C. binghami is the best-known member of a small, morphologically similar genus of Amazonian tetras. No subspecies are recognised.
