Taxonomy & naming
Schizodon trivittatus was formally described in 2021 by Garavello, Ramirez, Oliveira, Britski, Birindelli and Galetti in Neotropical Ichthyology, based on specimens from a tributary of the Culuene River (itself part of the upper Xingu system) in Mato Grosso, Brazil. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family whose genus-level and species-level boundaries the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) continues to actively revise; Schizodon remains the accepted genus for this species.
The species epithet trivittatus is Latin for "three-striped," referring to the three dark vertical bars on the trunk that the describing authors used, together with meristic and morphometric characters, to separate it from its closest relative, S. vittatus. The description paper places the split between the two species at roughly one million years ago, consistent with a pattern of river-drainage-driven speciation seen elsewhere in Schizodon. Because the description is only a few years old, S. trivittatus has not yet been picked up by FishBase or by hobby literature, and no aquarium care profile for it currently exists — a gap this article does not attempt to paper over.
Morphology
Schizodon trivittatus reaches a maximum recorded size of about 13 in (13 in standard length) in the type material, placing it among the larger headstanders rather than the small nano-grazers sometimes associated with the group's popular image — this is a substantial river fish, not a compact aquarium dwarf. Its silhouette follows the classic headstander plan: an elongated, moderately compressed body and a small, terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth adapted for grazing rather than grasping prey.
The species' most obvious field mark, and the source of its name, is a pattern of three dark vertical bars crossing the silvery flanks, which distinguish it from the similar S. vittatus. Beyond size, colour pattern and the fine anatomical details used in the original description (fin-ray counts, scale counts, and skeletal characters), detailed morphological data for the species is sparse, and this account does not extend beyond what the type description documents.
Habitat
The species is known from the Xingu and Tapajós river drainages and their tributaries in Mato Grosso and Pará states, Brazil, with the type locality on a tributary of the Culuene River (part of the upper Xingu system) at roughly 13°49'S, 53°14'W. The description paper characterises it as widely distributed within these drainages and common, though not abundant, wherever it occurs — a fish that turns up reliably across a broad swath of habitat without ever dominating it.
No water-chemistry data (temperature, pH or hardness) was reported in the original description. Like other Xingu/Tapajós basin fishes it can be expected to come from warm, clearwater-to-slightly-tinted Amazonian river habitat, but stating specific parameters here would go beyond what the source material documents, so none are asserted.
Feeding
Schizodon, like other headstanders, is characteristically a grazer or aufwuchs feeder: it adopts an oblique, head-down posture against submerged wood, rocks and plant surfaces and rasps algae and biofilm from them, supplementing this with soft plant material and, opportunistically, small invertebrates picked from the same surfaces. This feeding mode is well documented for the genus as a whole, even though the 2021 description of S. trivittatus itself did not include dietary or stomach-content data specific to this species.
In practice this means the species should be treated as a herbivore-leaning grazer: a keeper would need to offer vegetable-forward foods (blanched greens, algae wafers, spirulina-based foods) alongside some protein, in line with the diet documented for its close relatives, while recognising that no feeding study has been published for S. trivittatus specifically.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schizodon trivittatus; the 2021 description paper is a taxonomic account focused on distinguishing the species from S. vittatus and contains no reproductive-biology data. Headstanders in general are egg-scatterers with no elaborate courtship display on record, and it is reasonable to expect S. trivittatus follows the same broad pattern, but this is an inference from the genus rather than a documented observation for this species.
Breeding
As with other headstanders, Schizodon trivittatus can be expected to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care, a mode documented across Anostomidae more broadly; a few Leporinus and Anostomus species are occasionally reported spawning in aquaria or are farmed commercially, but breeding within this group as a whole remains uncommon in the hobby. No spawning has been recorded for S. trivittatus specifically — it is a very recently described species with essentially no aquarium history — so this section should be read as an expectation drawn from its relatives rather than an established fact.
In the aquarium
Schizodon trivittatus has no established aquarium history: it was described in 2021, is not listed on FishBase, and has no care profile in the hobby literature consulted for this article. Any care recommendations therefore have to be drawn cautiously from its genus. At a documented maximum of around 13 in, a mature individual would need a large, long aquarium with robust filtration and open swimming space along with wood or rock surfaces to graze — this is not a fish that stays small.
Prospective keepers should also weigh the wider reputation of its family: while Schizodon itself is primarily a grazer rather than a fin-nipper, several related headstanders (particularly some Leporinus and Anostomus) are known to become nippy and territorial with age, and soft-leaved aquarium plants are at risk from any grazing anostomid. Given the complete absence of documented aquarium experience with this specific species, anyone keeping it should expect to be working largely from first principles and from what is known of the wider genus, not from an established care template.
Conservation
The original description characterises Schizodon trivittatus as widely distributed across the Xingu and Tapajós drainages and common, though not abundant, which is consistent with a Least Concern status; no dedicated IUCN Red List assessment for the species was located, so this status should be read as inferred from the description rather than as a formal IUCN determination. The Xingu basin in particular has been reshaped by large hydroelectric development (notably the Belo Monte dam) over the past decade, and while S. trivittatus is not flagged as threatened, dam-driven changes to flow regime and habitat connectivity are a relevant long-term watch item for fishes across this drainage.
