Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus villasboasorum was formally described in 2017 by Burns, Chatfield, Birindelli and Sidlauskas, part of a broader taxonomic effort that has continued to resolve species boundaries within the large and historically confused genus Leporinus. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family characterised by an elongated body, a small subterminal or angled mouth adapted for grazing, and the distinctive oblique, head-down feeding posture that gives the family its common name.
The species epithet villasboasorum honours the Villas-Bôas brothers — Orlando, Cláudio and Leonardo — Brazilian activists and explorers who spent decades working to protect indigenous peoples and their lands in the upper Xingu region during the twentieth century, and who were instrumental in founding the Xingu Indigenous Park in 1961, the first indigenous reserve of its kind in South America. Naming the fish after them ties the species directly to the river system it inhabits and to the conservation history of that region. As a recently described, single-river-system species, it is not yet widely documented outside the primary literature and a handful of aggregator databases.
Morphology
Leporinus villasboasorum has the classic elongated, torpedo-shaped body typical of the genus, with a small, tough, subterminal mouth positioned for grazing hard surfaces rather than midwater feeding. FishBase records a maximum size of 5 in standard length, making it a comparatively modest member of a genus that includes species reaching well over twice that length — a useful data point for stocking, since many Leporinus sold in the trade are far larger as adults than they appear as juveniles.
Detailed colour-pattern and fin-count data distinguishing L. villasboasorum from its closest relatives are part of the original 2017 description and are not repeated here in the absence of a primary-source citation in hand; prospective keepers relying on photographs should be aware that Leporinus and Anostomus species are frequently confused in the aquarium trade, and positive identification of any individual fish should rest on locality data and expert comparison rather than pattern alone.
Habitat
The species is known from the Xingu and Tapajós river systems in the Brazilian Amazon, both major clearwater tributaries of the lower Amazon characterised by rocky and sandy stretches, rapids, and areas of fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water — classic habitat for a grazing, current-adapted headstander that spends its time rasping algae and biofilm from submerged rock and wood.
Specific water chemistry data for this species was not available in the sources reviewed for this article. As a general guide for Amazonian clearwater rheophilic characins, warm tropical temperatures and soft, slightly acidic to neutral water are typical, but keepers should treat any precise figures as approximate until better documentation becomes available rather than assume extreme blackwater conditions.
Feeding
Leporinus villasboasorum is a grazer, or aufwuchs feeder — it forages over rock, wood and other hard substrates in its characteristic oblique, head-down posture, rasping off algae and the biofilm layer of microorganisms and detritus that grows on it, and picking at small invertebrates in the process. Like other headstanders it is broadly herbivorous-leaning but not a strict vegetarian, and wild diets in the genus typically include some incidental animal matter.
In the aquarium, related Leporinus species are unfussy eaters that take a varied diet readily: flake and pellet foods, green/vegetable-based flake, blanched vegetables and algae wafers, along with occasional frozen foods such as mosquito larvae, bloodworm and brine shrimp. A diet weighted toward vegetable matter is appropriate, and keepers should expect the fish to graze on soft-leaved live plants if kept in a planted tank.
Mating
No species-specific courtship or spawning-behaviour data for Leporinus villasboasorum was found in the sources reviewed. Across the genus generally, Leporinus headstanders pair off as open-water spawners, with courtship and spawning reported to occur among densely grown vegetation and, in some accounts, at night. Reliable external sexual dimorphism has not been documented for this species.
Breeding
Leporinus headstanders as a group are egg-scatterers rather than nest-builders, mouthbrooders or bubble-nest species. Pairs are reported in hobby literature to spawn in densely planted or weedy areas, releasing eggs into a hidden spot rather than guarding an open nest, and the parents will eat their own eggs if the eggs are not removed or protected. There is no parental care once spawning is complete.
Breeding is rarely documented in home aquaria for this genus as a whole, and no dedicated captive-breeding account for Leporinus villasboasorum specifically was found in the sources reviewed. Prospective breeders should treat this as an essentially unbred aquarium fish rather than expect a reliable home-spawning protocol.
In the aquarium
Leporinus villasboasorum stays relatively modest for the genus at a recorded maximum of 5 in SL, but the caution that applies to headstanders generally still applies here: many Leporinus and Anostomus species are sharp-toothed fin-nippers that grow more territorial with age, and they are a poor match for long-finned or slow-moving tankmates such as bettas or angelfish. A tank of at least several feet in length with open swimming space, sturdy driftwood and rockwork, and a sand or smooth-gravel substrate suits the fish's grazing, current-loving habits well.
Given the species' clearwater, rocky-river origin, keepers should prioritise strong filtration and good oxygenation, and should be prepared for the fish to graze on soft-leaved plants — hardy, tough-leaved or artificial planting is a safer bet than a delicate aquascape. As with any Leporinus, it is best kept with robust tankmates that can hold their own and are not likely targets for nipping.
Conservation
Leporinus villasboasorum has not yet been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. As a species restricted to the Xingu and Tapajós river system, it falls within a region under significant and well-documented anthropogenic pressure, most notably the Belo Monte Dam complex on the Xingu River, which has altered flow regimes and habitat within part of the species' range. As with many recently described, single-river-system Amazonian fish, a lack of formal assessment reflects limited data rather than confirmed safety, and the species is a reasonable candidate for future conservation attention given its restricted range and the scale of hydrological change in the Xingu basin.
