Taxonomy & naming
Semaprochilodus kneri was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1909 as Prochilodus kneri, honouring the Austrian zoologist Rudolf Kner. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists the valid combination as Semaprochilodus kneri (Pellegrin, 1909), with a lectotype (MNHN 1887-0708) designated by Castro & Vari in 2003 and a type locality in the Orinoco River, Venezuela. It belongs to the family Prochilodontidae — the flagtail or flannelmouth characins — a small group of migratory, detritivorous South American fishes closely related to the larger characin radiation covered elsewhere on this site, but distinct enough from the true tetras, piranhas and pacus to sit in their own family.
The genus Semaprochilodus was split from the older, broader concept of Prochilodus, and older aquarium literature and some trade labels still use "Prochilodus kneri" — that is the pre-split combination and not the currently accepted name. This species is easily confused in the trade with its close relative Semaprochilodus taeniurus, the black-banded leporinus's fin pattern being a common point of misidentification; reliable separation rests on fin colour intensity and banding pattern rather than body shape, which is very similar across the genus.
Morphology
Semaprochilodus kneri has the classic prochilodontid build: a moderately deep, laterally compressed, torpedo-like body with a small, distinctively protrusible, downward-facing mouth adapted for grazing rather than biting. FishBase records a maximum length of 11 in standard length, making this a substantially larger fish than most characins kept in home aquaria — it is closer in scale to a large barb or a small pacu than to a tetra.
The body is bright silver, and the fins are the fish's signature feature: the dorsal, anal and caudal fins carry bold black bands set against a vivid yellow-to-orange ground colour, which is the source of the common trade name "yellow flagtail." The caudal fin in particular is deeply forked and strikingly patterned, and it is held erect and actively flared as the fish swims, giving a shoal of these fish a lively, flag-like display quality that has made the genus popular in large public and hobbyist aquaria despite the fish's size.
Habitat
Semaprochilodus kneri is native to the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela and Colombia, with FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes both citing this basin (and, per the Catalog of Fishes, extending into parts of the Amazon basin) as its native range. It is a benthopelagic, freshwater, tropical fish, typically found in the main river channel and larger tributaries rather than small headwater streams, where it forages over sediment and submerged wood.
Water across its range is warm and mildly acidic to neutral; aquarium-trade sources give recommended keeping conditions of roughly 75–82 °F and pH 6.5–7.2, consistent with the lowland, tropical river conditions of the Orinoco system. As a migratory species, it moves seasonally between main-channel and floodplain habitats, tracking the rise and fall of the flood pulse rather than remaining in one fixed stretch of river year-round.
Feeding
This species is a grazer, not a predator. In the wild it feeds by scraping algae, biofilm and organic detritus from submerged surfaces — wood, rocks and sediment — using its small, specialised, downward-oriented mouth, a feeding style shared across the Prochilodontidae and one of the reasons these fish are ecologically important as nutrient recyclers in South American river systems.
In the aquarium, Semaprochilodus kneri should be fed as the omnivorous grazer it is: a vegetable-forward diet of algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets and fresh vegetables such as spinach, lettuce and zucchini, supplemented with occasional other dry, fresh or frozen foods. It is not a fin-nipper or a hunter, and it does not need — or benefit from — a meat-heavy, carnivore-style diet.
Mating
Little detail on courtship behaviour specific to Semaprochilodus kneri has been documented in the sources available for this article. Semaprochilodus kneri is a large, active, long-lived fish that is frequently underestimated at the size it is sold. Aquarium-trade sources recommend a minimum of roughly 100 gallons (around 100 US gal) for an adult, and given its natural shoaling tendency and 11 in adult size, a single specimen in a small tank is both undersized and socially isolated; keepers with the space do better with a small group in a correspondingly larger system. It is a hardy, adaptable fish for warm, mildly acidic to neutral water (roughly 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.2) and appreciates a current and good oxygenation reflecting its river-channel origins.
Because it is a grazer rather than a predator, it generally coexists well with a wide range of similarly sized tankmates and is not a fin-nipper, though its size means small fish should not be housed alongside it purely on safety-through-scale grounds. Provide driftwood and other grazing surfaces, robust filtration for a large bioload, and vegetable-inclusive feeding as described above.
