Steindachnerina seriata was described by Netto-Ferreira and Vari in 2011, part of a wave of species-level revision within the genus Steindachnerina — a group of small curimatid characins distributed across Neotropical South America and named for the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner. It sits in the family Curimatidae within the order Characiformes, a family characterised by toothless or near-toothless jaws and a detritivorous, algae- and biofilm-grazing habit, distinguishing its members sharply from the predatory or omnivorous reputation of piranhas and pacus in the wider characin order.
The type locality is the Rio Jamanxim, a tributary of the Rio Tapajós in the eastern Amazon basin of Brazil, and the species remains known from only a small number of localities in that drainage.
