Taxonomy & naming
Curculionichthys itaim was formally described by Roxo, Dias, Silva, and Oliveira in 2017 in Zootaxa (volume 4341, number 2, pages 258–270), alongside a second new species of the same genus. The type specimens were collected from the Rio Tapajós basin near Itaituba, Pará state, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Curculionichthys itaim with CoF species ID 75116.
The genus Curculionichthys — erected by Roxo and colleagues as part of ongoing revision of the Hypoptopomatinae — takes its name from the Latin curculionem, referring to an elongated snout, combined with the Greek ichthys (fishes), alluding to the pointed, protruding head profile characteristic of the group. The species epithet itaim derives from the Tupi-Guarani words itá (stones) and im (diminutive suffix), related to the name of the nearby city Itaituba — from itá'imtyba, meaning 'gathering of small stones' — and thus referencing both the type locality and the stony, cobble-rich microhabitat typical of Hypoptopomatinae in clear Amazonian tributaries.
C. itaim belongs to the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae within Loricariidae. The genus is characterised by a suite of plate-count and morphometric features that distinguish it from related genera such as Hisonotus and Otcinclus.
Morphology
At a maximum recorded standard length (SL) of 1 in in unsexed adults, C. itaim is among the smallest known loricariids — a micropleco even by the modest standards of the Hypoptopomatinae. The body form follows the general Hypoptopomatinae plan: dorsoventrally flattened, covered in bony scute armour, with a ventrally positioned suckermouth adapted for grazing.
Diagnostic characters established in the original description include: 8–10 plates in the abdominal lateral series (versus the 4–6 plates typical of most congeners); an anterior head profile that is distinctly pointed; papillae distributed randomly across the lower lip (rather than in organised rows); and the absence of large, conspicuous odontodes forming rows on the head and trunk. The body lacks contrasting dark-brown spots. The medial plate series following the lateral line numbers 22–23 plates; the abdominal median series has 2–3 irregular rows. Fin-ray counts include 7 dorsal soft rays and 6 anal soft rays. The dentary bears 11–18 teeth.
Sexual dimorphism has not been described for this species in the available literature.
Habitat
C. itaim is known from the Rio Tapajós basin in Pará and Mato Grosso states, Brazil — specifically from the vicinity of Itaituba (approximately 4°17'S, 55°59'W). The Tapajós is a major southern tributary of the Amazon, draining the central Brazilian shield before joining the main Amazon channel near Santarém. It is a clear-water river, in contrast to the white-water Solimões-Amazon or the black-water Rio Negro, with characteristically low turbidity, moderate current, and a sandy to rocky substrate.
No specific water chemistry parameters (pH, temperature, conductivity) have been published for the type locality of C. itaim. Clear-water Tapajós tributaries typically present soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral conditions, but any specific values for this species' microhabitat would be speculative without field measurements. The species is expected to inhabit benthic microhabitats — likely rocky or cobble-strewn substrates in moderate current, consistent with the Hypoptopomatinae pattern.
Feeding
No dietary studies have been published for C. itaim. Based on subfamily biology and the morphology of the ventral scraping mouth, C. itaim is expected to be a grazer of periphyton, diatoms, and aufwuchs — scraping biofilms from rock and wood surfaces in clear-water streams. The trophic level assigned in FishBase (2.6) is consistent with a predominantly plant/algae-based diet with minimal invertebrate predation.
The tiny adult size of this species suggests it exploits microhabitats and food resources at a scale unavailable to larger loricariids, potentially including the biofilm coatings of fine gravel and root surfaces.
Mating
No mating or courtship observations have been published for C. itaim. The species is essentially unknown outside the scientific description, and its minute adult size would make behavioural observation challenging both in the field and in captivity. General Hypoptopomatinae patterns suggest male territorial behaviour around shelter sites and possible seasonal reproductive timing tied to Amazonian flood pulses.
Given the absence of data, any further detail would be speculative.
Breeding
Reproductive biology has not been documented for C. itaim. The species has not been maintained or bred in captivity, and no field observations of nesting or larval behaviour are available in the literature. Its 2017 description is the primary scientific record.
Data on clutch size, spawning site, incubation period, or parental behaviour are not available.
In the aquarium
Curculionichthys itaim is not present in the ornamental fish trade and has no established aquarium record. Its extremely small adult size (1 in SL) and specialised clear-water habitat would pose significant challenges in captivity — both in terms of the fine-scale feeding requirements of a true micrograzer and the water quality standards expected by clear-water Tapajós species.
No husbandry guidelines exist for this species. It is a scientific specimen rather than an aquarium subject, and is not recommended or available for the hobby.
Conservation
Curculionichthys itaim has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. The species was described in 2017 and remains poorly known; no population surveys or threat assessments have been published. The Rio Tapajós basin, while one of the larger remaining intact Amazonian watersheds, faces growing pressures from hydroelectric development (the Tapajós Dam complex was proposed though contested), deforestation in the upper basin, and expanding agricultural activity in Mato Grosso. The long-term status of small, range-restricted loricariids in such systems depends heavily on the preservation of clear-water, low-turbidity stream conditions.
