Taxonomy & naming
Chaetostoma formosae was described by the Colombian ichthyologist Gustavo A. Ballen in 2011 in the journal Papéis Avulsos de Zoologia (São Paulo), in a paper entitled 'A new species of Chaetostoma Tschudi (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from Colombia, with a definition of the C. anale species group.' The holotype (ICNMHN 17114) was collected from Caño Chuy, an affluent of the río Upía on the Boyacá–Casanare border, in the upper río Meta basin (Orinoco drainage) near San Luis de Gaceno, department of Boyacá, eastern Colombia.
The species had already been in the ornamental fish trade for some years before its formal description, exported from the Villavicencio area of Meta department under the L-numbers L444 and L187b (and historically under L146 and L146a, which are now largely accepted as the same fish). It was routinely misidentified as Chaetostoma thomsoni Regan, 1904, a species from the upper Magdalena drainage on the opposite (western) side of the Andes, or as C. milesi from Venezuela — errors attributable to the general similarity of rubbernose plecos and inadequate taxonomic treatment of the group.
Ballen placed C. formosae in the C. anale species group, characterised by an enlarged second unbranched anal-fin ray bearing two distinct posterior dermal folds in mature males, a feature distinguishing it from the C. thomsoni group. The genus Chaetostoma Tschudi, 1846 belongs to subfamily Hypostominae of family Loricariidae (order Siluriformes). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Chaetostoma formosae Ballen, 2011 as a valid species.
Morphology
Chaetostoma formosae is a small to medium-sized loricariid, with males reaching approximately 4 in SL and females somewhat smaller (around 3 in SL); FishBase records a maximum of 4 in SL. ScotCat and hobby sources typically cite 4 in (approximately 4 inches).
The body form is characteristic of the genus: broader and more depressed than a typical Hypostomus or Ancistrus, with a distinctly blunt, rounded snout lacking plates, odontodes, or fleshy tentacles on the anterior and anterolateral portions — the diagnostic 'rubbernose' or 'bulldog' profile that gives the common names. This soft, flexible snout is an adaptation for pressing tightly against and conforming to irregular rock surfaces in strong current. The rest of the body is fully armoured in bony scutes.
Colour is brown to grey-brown dorsally, with a pattern of darker spots, streaks, or reticulations that can vary between individuals and populations; the Seriously Fish account and its L444 designation describe a striped bulldog pattern with darker saddle markings. The underside is pale to whitish. Males develop more pronounced odontodes on the pectoral spines and along the body flanks than females; females are fuller-bodied when gravid.
The mouth is large and adapted for powerful suction, allowing the fish to remain stationary in fast current while grazing biofilm from rock surfaces. Dentition is multicuspid, suited to scraping aufwuchs rather than the reduced dentition of carnivorous Hypancistrus.
Habitat
Chaetostoma formosae is an obligate inhabitant of fast-flowing, high-gradient headwater streams in the western piedmont foothills of the Eastern Andes of Colombia, within the upper Río Meta and upper Río Guaviare drainages (both part of the larger Orinoco basin). The type locality, Caño Chuy in the río Upía system, exemplifies the species' preferred environment: a clear, cold-to-cool, turbulent torrent running over exposed bedrock, boulders, and cobbles, with little suspended sediment and a very high ambient dissolved-oxygen concentration.
Water temperatures in these piedmont streams typically range from approximately 68–75 °F — cooler than lowland Amazonian habitats and significantly cooler than the blackwater environments favoured by Hypancistrus. The water is relatively clear and moderately hard to hard compared with Amazonian standards (conductivity of piedmont streams can be moderate, pH often near neutral to slightly acidic at 6.5–7.8). Seriously Fish records hardness values of 143–447 ppm from collection sites — reflecting the mineral-rich substrate of the Andean foothills.
C. formosae occupies the same rock surfaces and biofilm as the currents that maintain them: it is fundamentally a clinging, grazing fish shaped by selection for high-current adhesion and efficient aufwuchs exploitation. It does not inhabit slow, silted, or heavily vegetated areas.
The commercial export hub for this species is the city of Villavicencio, the gateway city of the Meta department, from which ornamental fish have been exported for decades.
Feeding
Chaetostoma formosae is primarily an aufwuchs grazer: its multicuspid teeth and powerful suction-disc mouth are adapted for rasping the thin but diverse layer of algae, diatoms, microinvertebrates, and organic detritus that coats rock surfaces in turbulent, well-lit piedmont streams. In the wild, this biofilm constitutes the bulk of the diet, supplemented by small insect larvae, copepods, and other benthic invertebrates encountered during grazing.
In the aquarium, this dietary preference translates to a strong requirement for readily available algae — the Seriously Fish account is clear that algae must be constantly present, whether growing naturally in the tank under strong lighting, or supplied as fresh algae wafers, fresh vegetables (blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach, kale), or spirulina-based sinking preparations. A bare, algae-free tank will leave this species underfed even if it eats sinking pellets.
While primarily herbivorous-to-omnivorous in the aufwuchs sense, C. formosae will also accept and benefit from occasional meaty supplements: frozen bloodworm, daphnia, Artemia, and similar live or frozen invertebrate fare. A varied diet covering both plant and animal components is recommended for long-term health and conditioning prior to breeding.
Mating
Mating behaviour in Chaetostoma formosae has been observed in captivity but is not extensively documented in the primary literature. The species is a cave- or crevice-spawner (eggs are deposited on the underside or interior of a hard surface, typically a cave roof or sheltered flat rock), with the male taking responsibility for brood care.
Males defend territories within the aquarium, typically centred on a preferred spawning site. Courtship involves the male cleaning and occupying the chosen cave and displaying to females. Once a female is receptive, spawning occurs inside the cave — or, in the absence of a suitable enclosed space, on a sheltered flat surface. The female departs after egg deposition and the male remains to guard and fan the clutch.
The Seriously Fish account notes that captive spawning records are few and far between, suggesting that this species has more specific conditioning or environmental requirements than some other loricariids. The cooler temperature preference of the species (68–75 °F) relative to most aquarium-room temperatures may be a factor; maintaining conditions that genuinely replicate the cool, highly oxygenated piedmont stream environment is key.
Breeding
Breeding reports for Chaetostoma formosae in captivity are relatively uncommon compared with more frequently bred loricariids such as Ancistrus or Rineloricaria. The few successful accounts describe a pattern consistent with other cave-spawning hypostomines: eggs deposited in batches inside a suitable cavity or on a sheltered rock surface, guarded and fanned by the male, hatching in approximately 5–7 days at the species' preferred temperature range.
Conditioning fish for breeding requires excellent water quality — particularly high dissolved oxygen, strong current simulation, and cool temperatures (around 72–75 °F). Regular large water changes with slightly cooler water can help trigger spawning readiness, mimicking seasonal rainfall patterns in the Colombian piedmont. A diet high in algae and occasional live or frozen invertebrate foods is important for bringing fish into good reproductive condition.
Fry require a constant supply of algae and fine vegetable matter from first feeding. Baby brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered sinking foods can supplement the algae diet in the first weeks. Like other loricariids, the fry are miniature adults in body form and are relatively self-sufficient once free-swimming.
For hobbyists interested in breeding this species, the most important investments are a robust current-generating setup (powerhead or strong canister return), strong illumination to encourage algae growth, and temperatures maintained on the cooler end of the acceptable range.
In the aquarium
Chaetostoma formosae is a moderately demanding aquarium fish whose needs differ meaningfully from those of the lowland tropical plecos most hobbyists encounter. The defining care requirements are: high current, high dissolved oxygen, cooler temperatures, and abundant algae.
Seriously Fish recommends a minimum tank base of 120 × 12 in for a small group, with filtration providing 4–5× hourly turnover. The temperature range of 68–75 °F is lower than standard tropical-tank temperature and should be actively maintained; heating may be needed in winter in cool rooms, but the aim is the lower end of the tropical range, not the upper. New driftwood should be avoided, as the tannins released can depress pH and alter water chemistry in ways the species may not tolerate well; Seriously Fish specifically cautions against it.
Strong lighting to encourage algae growth on tank walls and décor is important, as is a rocky hardscape with hiding places. Hardy plants such as Microsorum, Crinum, and Anubias can be included; fine-leaved, soft plants may be nibbled.
The species is peaceful toward other fish and appropriate for a community tank of similarly sized, non-aggressive species. It is not aggressive toward conspecifics, though males may display to each other. It should not be expected to provide meaningful algae control in a heavily planted tank, but will diligently clean rock surfaces and glass.
The aquarium trade markets this fish widely as a 'rubbernose pleco' or 'bulldog pleco' and it is frequently sold to general hobbyists as an easy algae eater. While reasonably adaptable, keepers should be aware that its cool-water, high-oxygen, fast-current requirements mean it will not thrive in a standard warm tropical tank run at 81–82 °F with minimal water movement — a mismatch that accounts for many quiet failures with this species.
Conservation
Chaetostoma formosae is assessed as Vulnerable (VU, criterion B2ab(iii)) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 2 November 2020. The assessment is based on an estimated area of occupancy of approximately 1,194 mi² — well below the 2,0 mi² threshold for the criterion — combined with inferred continuing decline in the quality of stream habitat across the species' range in the piedmont departments of Meta and Casanare.
The principal threats are those affecting almost all eastern Andean foothill streams in Colombia: deforestation and conversion of riparian and watershed land to agriculture (particularly cattle ranching and oil palm cultivation), which increases sedimentation and nutrient loading; agrochemical runoff; and urban and peri-urban development around Villavicencio and other Meta towns. These pressures directly degrade the clean, swift-flowing, low-sediment habitat that Chaetostoma formosae requires.
Ornamental fish collection represents an additional stressor. The fish has been exported commercially from the Villavicencio area for decades and is a staple of the Colombian ornamental fish trade. While individual collection volumes are not precisely quantified, the combination of restricted range, specific habitat requirements, and ongoing collection pressure informed the Vulnerable assessment.
No formal conservation measures specifically targeting C. formosae are in place. The species occurs within Colombia's natural protected-area network to some extent, but enforcement of aquatic habitat protections in the piedmont region remains inconsistent. The ongoing loss and degradation of Andean piedmont stream habitat represents a long-term threat to Chaetostoma formosae and the broader fish assemblage of these rivers.
