One of the oldest-described members of its genus, Chaetostoma guairense has clung to the fast, oxygen-rich streams draining the Cordillera de la Costa toward Venezuela's Caribbean coast since Steindachner named it from the Río Guaire in 1881. A classic rubber-nose grazer built for current, it belongs to a group of rheophilic loricariids whose entire biology — flattened body, sucker mouth, and tolerance for cool highland temperatures — is an answer to life on wave-washed rock.

Taxonomy & naming

Chaetostoma guairense was formally described by Franz Steindachner in 1881, based on material from the Río Guaire near Caracas, Venezuela, published in the Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe (volume 43, page 121, plate 3). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Chaetostoma guairense Steindachner, 1881; the variant spelling Chaetostomus guairensis is treated as an alternate original spelling and synonym.

The species sits within the large, taxonomically complex genus Chaetostoma, the rubber-nose plecos, in subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae. Some earlier sources conflated C. guairense with C. dupouii, another Venezuelan Chaetostoma; both names are currently maintained as valid by the Catalog of Fishes, but the two taxa share overlapping distributions in northern Venezuelan drainages and the limits of each have not always been rigorously applied in the literature. Researchers and hobbyists should treat distributional and morphological records associated with either name from this region with some caution until a formal revision resolves the boundary between them.

At species level, C. guairense is one of the more biogeographically distinctive members of the genus, being restricted to the coastal drainage system north of the Orinoco — a distribution that connects it faunistically with the endemic fauna of Lake Valencia rather than with the vast Orinoco basin to the south.

Morphology

Adults reach a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 3 in SL, a size typical for the smaller Chaetostoma. The body follows the strongly depressed, dorsoventrally flattened plan that characterises rheophilic loricariids: the ventral surface is broad and flat, optimised for grip against current-swept rock. The snout is rounded and fleshy — hence the 'rubber-nose' vernacular applied to the entire genus — and carries the large, inferior sucker-mouth armed with fine, bicuspid teeth suited to scraping algal biofilm from hard substrates.

As in all Chaetostoma, the body is encased in overlapping bony scutes. The odontode-bearing plates on the cheeks and flanks are conspicuous in life. Precise colour pattern data are not well documented for C. guairense in the published literature, but the genus generally shows cryptic brownish-olive tones with variable spotting or marbling that provides camouflage against the algae-covered rock of fast-water habitats.

Sexual dimorphism in Chaetostoma follows a pattern consistent across the genus: males typically develop broader heads, a slimmer ventral profile, and disproportionately large pelvic fins relative to females. Interopercular odontodes become more pronounced in breeding males. Females are visibly fuller-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

Chaetostoma guairense is known from the Tuy-Guaire drainage and the Lake Valencia basin in northern Venezuela — a biogeographically distinct region isolated from the Orinoco system by the Cordillera de la Costa. The Río Guaire flows through Caracas before emptying into the Río Tuy, which drains northeast to the Caribbean coast. Lake Valencia is an endorheic basin situated in an inter-Andean valley at roughly 1312 ft elevation, whose unique fauna includes several endemic species.

The coastal mountain streams inhabited by C. guairense are characterised by fast current, high dissolved oxygen, rocky substrate, and relatively cool temperatures. Recorded water parameters from hobbyist sources indicate a pH range of 6.6–7.6 and temperatures of 70–75 °F, consistent with foothill and premontane stream conditions under cloud-forest influence. The lower end of this temperature range is notably cool for a South American catfish and reflects the altitude and southern-facing cloud-forest catchments that feed these rivers.

Microhabitat is rock and gravel in fast-flowing sections, where the fish grazes algal mats and biofilm directly from smooth stone surfaces. Habitat imagery from the Río Aragua, a similar coastal Venezuelan stream, confirms the characteristic shallow, fast, boulder-strewn stream type occupied by this species.

Feeding

Like all Chaetostoma, C. guairense is a dedicated algae grazer and biofilm scraper. The inferior sucker-mouth, armed with fine multi-cusped teeth, is purpose-built for rasping aufwuchs — the community of algae, diatoms, periphyton, bacteria, and fine detritus that colonises submerged hard surfaces in well-lit, oxygenated streams. In high-current environments, aufwuchs communities are often dense and nutritious, and Chaetostoma have evolved to exploit them with remarkable efficiency.

In the aquarium, the diet should centre on algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables — courgette (zucchini), cucumber, spinach, and sweet potato are all accepted by closely related species. Live aufwuchs on rocks and bogwood supplement prepared foods; a tank with some natural algae growth benefits the fish. Protein-rich foods should be offered only sparingly, as Chaetostoma are principally herbivores and their digestive tracts are not adapted to high-protein loads.

Mating

Courtship behaviour in C. guairense has not been documented in the published literature, but observations from related Chaetostoma in captivity provide a reasonable template. Males are territorial around preferred spawning sites — typically flat rock surfaces or the undersides of smooth stones in areas of good current. Dominant males display to rivals with lateral body posturing and may engage in brief contact using their pectoral spines. A receptive female is courted by the male positioning himself alongside or beneath her as she approaches his site.

Males in breeding condition develop more prominent interopercular and dorsal odontodes. Gravid females are noticeably plumper and wider when viewed from above. The requisite of fast, clean, well-oxygenated water appears to be critical for triggering reproductive behaviour in rheophilic Chaetostoma; stagnant or poorly oxygenated conditions likely inhibit breeding attempts entirely.

Breeding

No breeding records for Chaetostoma guairense in captivity are known from the PlanetCatfish database or the hobbyist literature at the time of writing. The general reproductive mode documented for the genus involves spawning under flat stones or similar sheltered substrates in fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water, with the male remaining to guard and fan the adhesive egg clutch. Fry are typically miniature replicas of the adults and begin grazing almost immediately after yolk absorption.

Successfully breeding any rheophilic Chaetostoma in captivity requires replicating fast current, high dissolved oxygen, and cool temperatures — conditions that are technically achievable with powerheads or a sump system but demand deliberate effort. The cool temperature requirement (70–75 °F) for C. guairense may be an additional challenge in warmer households without active cooling.

In the aquarium

Chaetostoma guairense carries very few records in the hobbyist community; only a handful of spotter records exist on PlanetCatfish, and there are no documented captive breeding reports. The species is not a regular appearance in the ornamental trade and should be considered an uncommon import at best.

For those who do obtain specimens, the husbandry requirements follow those of the genus: a strong water current is non-negotiable, and dissolved oxygen must be kept high. The cool temperature range (70–75 °F) means this species is not compatible with typical tropical community tanks maintained at 79–82 °F; a dedicated setup or a cool-water community is appropriate. Smooth rounded stones, a sandy or fine gravel substrate, and a high-powered filtration system with significant surface agitation are the core requirements.

Water quality should be excellent — low nitrates, zero ammonia and nitrite, and regular partial water changes. The tank should receive moderate to bright lighting to encourage algal growth on rocks as a supplementary food source. Flat stones or slate pieces placed at angles can serve as territories and potential spawning sites. The species is not suited to warm, heavily planted community tanks. Compatible tankmates would ideally share the same cool, fast-water preference — other rheophilic species from similar altitudinal ranges.

Conservation

Chaetostoma guairense has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and currently holds a status of Not Evaluated. No formal population assessments are available.

The species is endemic to a small geographic area — the northern coastal drainages of Venezuela — that faces significant human pressure. The Río Guaire flows through metropolitan Caracas and has historically been heavily affected by urban pollution and channelisation. The Lake Valencia basin is similarly under pressure from agricultural runoff and industrial development around one of Venezuela's most densely populated regions. The cool, fast, oxygen-rich stream habitat required by C. guairense is particularly sensitive to sedimentation, nutrient enrichment, and flow alteration — all of which are ongoing concerns in northern Venezuelan catchments. A formal assessment of this species' conservation status would be a worthwhile undertaking.
