Taxonomy & naming
Chaetostoma lepturum was described by Charles Tate Regan in 1912 in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (part 3, article 36, page 667, plate 75, figure 1), from type specimens collected in the Río Tamana, a tributary of the upper Río San Juan system in Chocó Department, southwestern Colombia. The original publication spelled the genus as Chaetostomus — an orthographic variant later corrected to Chaetostoma. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats the species as valid with no synonyms, citing subsequent revisions by Isbrücker (1980, 1995, 2001, 2002), Burgess (1989), Fisch-Müller et al. (2003), Ferraris (2007), Lujan et al. (2015), and DoNascimiento et al. (2017).
The genus Chaetostoma belongs to subfamily Hypostominae within Loricariidae. The genus name derives from the Greek chaite (hair) and stoma (mouth), referring to the numerous bristle-like odontodes that fringe the snout and give the group its common name, 'bristlenose' or 'rubbernose' plecos. The specific epithet lepturum is from the Greek leptos (thin, slender) and oura (tail), likely referring to the slender caudal peduncle.
At 8.5 in SL, C. lepturum is notably larger than most of its congeners, many of which reach only 3–6 in SL — a distinction that further separates it ecologically from the smaller rubber-nose species commonly encountered in the hobby.
Morphology
Chaetostoma lepturum reaches a maximum recorded size of 8.5 in standard length (SL) — among the largest known species in the genus. As in all Chaetostoma, the body is fully encased in bony scute armour, with the head broad and flattened and the snout bearing an array of bristle-like odontodes. The caudal peduncle is distinctively slender, consistent with the etymology of the specific name.
No detailed morphological redescription of C. lepturum is readily accessible beyond the original 1912 account and its assignment to Chaetostoma. General characters expected for the genus include a ventrally positioned sucker mouth adapted for grazing hard substrates, evertible interopercular odontodes (cheek spines) that function in territorial defence and mate assessment, and strong, flattened pectoral spines. Published morphological data for this species specifically are sparse.
Habitat
Chaetostoma lepturum is known exclusively from the upper Río San Juan basin in Chocó Department, Colombia — a Pacific-slope drainage west of the Andes. The type locality, the Río Tamana, is a fast-moving piedmont river in one of the world's wettest regions (Chocó receives among the highest annual rainfall of any continental landmass). No published water-parameter data exist for this species specifically, but the Chocó Pacific-slope rivers are generally characterised by cool to warm temperatures depending on elevation, soft water, slightly acidic to near-neutral pH, and — critically — high dissolved oxygen maintained by rapid flow over rocky substrates.
This oxygen-rich, fast-moving microhabitat is the ecological niche of Chaetostoma across its range. The genus is obligately rheophilic: its adhesive ventral disc and robust body plan are adaptations for clinging to rock faces and boulders in fast current, and it cannot tolerate the warm, slow, oxygen-poor water that threatens many parts of the Chocó's degraded river network.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study of Chaetostoma lepturum has been published. The genus as a whole is composed of periphyton grazers: the sucker-like mouth and patch of fine teeth are well suited to rasping diatoms, algae, biofilm, and detritus from the surfaces of boulders and bedrock in swift current. Some Chaetostoma are documented as facultative air-breathers, drawing atmospheric oxygen at the water surface when dissolved oxygen falls — an adaptation that reflects the genus's origin in highly oxygenated torrential habitats where any significant reduction in oxygen signals environmental stress.
In common with rheophilic loricariids generally, C. lepturum likely forages intensively in areas of high current over exposed rock, where periphyton productivity is greatest and organic drift (invertebrates, detritus) contributes a supplementary protein fraction.
Mating
No mating observations have been published for Chaetostoma lepturum. Within Chaetostoma, males typically develop larger and more pronounced interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) than females — a sexually dimorphic trait used in rival male displays and presumably in mate attraction. Territorial defence of preferred rock crevices or cavities ahead of spawning is consistent with the broader loricariid reproductive pattern, and likely applies here given the genus's cave-spawning habit.
Breeding
No published captive or field breeding data exist for Chaetostoma lepturum. Given its Endangered status and restricted distribution in a remote, difficult-to-access region of Chocó, the species is extremely unlikely to be in the aquarium trade, and no hobbyist breeding reports have been located. Based on the genus, Chaetostoma is presumed to spawn in rock crevices or under boulders, with male parental care of the egg clutch — a pattern well-established in related genera and documented in captive-bred Chaetostoma species from other parts of the range.
In the aquarium
Chaetostoma lepturum is not known to be established in the aquarium hobby, and no import records or husbandry accounts have been located. Its Endangered status and restricted origin in a Colombian river system subject to intense environmental pressures make collection for trade highly problematic from both practical and ethical standpoints.
In the hypothetical context of aquarium care, the species' rheophilic ecology would demand conditions unlike those of most commonly kept plecos: high dissolved oxygen (ideally above 7 mg/L), vigorous water movement, cool temperatures appropriate to montane Pacific-slope rivers, and a diet centred on algae and periphyton from rocky surfaces. The large adult size (over 8.5 in SL) would require a substantial aquarium. Until captive-bred specimens are available from legitimate sources, this species is best regarded as a subject of conservation attention rather than a candidate for home aquaria.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Chaetostoma lepturum as Endangered (EN) in October 2014. The assessment reflects the species' extremely restricted range — confined to the upper Río San Juan basin in a single department of Colombia — and the severe and ongoing threats to its habitat in the Chocó region.
The Chocó is globally recognised as a biodiversity hotspot and one of the most biodiverse terrestrial and freshwater regions on Earth, yet it faces devastating rates of deforestation for cattle ranching, palm oil, and smallholder agriculture, alongside illegal artisanal gold mining that involves both mechanised river dredging and the use of mercury, which poisons aquatic food webs. The clear, fast-flowing, rocky-substrated rivers that Chaetostoma depend on are transformed by these activities into warm, silted, low-oxygen channels. For a rheophile with a restricted range and specialised habitat requirements, such degradation is existential.
No recovery plan or targeted conservation action for C. lepturum specifically is documented in accessible sources. The species' fate is tied to the broader conservation trajectory of the Chocó's river systems — one of the most urgent freshwater conservation challenges in South America.
