Taxonomy & naming
Chaetostoma leucomelas was described by Carl Eigenmann in 1918 in the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society (volume 56, number 7, p. 681), from specimens taken in the Río Patía drainage in Colombia. Eigenmann redescribed it more fully from types in 1922 (plate 12, figs. 5–6). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Chaetostoma leucomelas as the valid name; the earlier combination Chaetostomus leucomelas is a synonym.
Chaetostoma belongs to the tribe Chaetostomini within subfamily Hypostominae and encompasses a large group of rheophilic, dorsoventrally flattened loricariids commonly called rubber-nose or rubber-lip plecos. The genus name derives from Greek chaite (bristle or mane) and stoma (mouth), alluding to the fleshy papillae or odontode-bearing structures around the snout.
The species epithet leucomelas combines Greek leukos (white) and melas (black), describing the contrasting pale-and-dark coloration pattern. In the aquarium trade, this fish circulates under the common name Magdalena Tiger Chaetostoma, referencing the Magdalena-Cauca drainage where part of its range lies.
Morphology
Chaetostoma leucomelas is one of the larger members of its genus, reaching a reported maximum of 8 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase data, with a maximum recorded weight of approximately 310 g. PlanetCatfish records a maximum of 5.5 in SL, suggesting that the 8 in figure likely reflects total length or exceptionally large individuals; most specimens in the hobby reach 4–5.5 in.
The body conforms to the classic Chaetostoma plan: strongly depressed, broad, and heavily armoured with keeled scutes. The snout is flattened and spatulate, adapted for pressing firmly against rocky substrates in current. The mouth is large and ventrally placed, equipped with robust rasping teeth suited for scraping algae and biofilm from hard surfaces. Unlike Ancistrus, the genus lacks fleshy branched tentacles on the snout — the rostral margin is instead studded with short, stiff odontodes.
Coloration is a dark brown to blackish ground overlaid with an irregular pattern of pale cream to yellowish blotches and vermiculations, producing the tiger or marbled appearance referenced in its common name. Fin margins may show pale edging.
Sexual dimorphism is typical for Chaetostoma: males develop a larger and broader head, a slimmer ventral profile, and disproportionately large pelvic fins compared with females. The enlarged pelvic fins in males are thought to function in clutch guarding, helping anchor the male over adhesive eggs in fast-flowing water.
Habitat
Chaetostoma leucomelas is known from two distinct drainage systems in Colombia: the Río Patía on the Pacific slope, and the Magdalena-Cauca system draining to the Caribbean. This trans-Andean distribution across both the Pacific and Caribbean slopes makes it unusual among Chaetostoma, most of which are restricted to a single drainage.
In both systems, the species inhabits the fast-flowing, rocky, well-oxygenated reaches typical of Andean foothill and montane rivers. Chaetostoma as a group are quintessential rheophiles: they are adapted for life in current, using their depressed body and large pectoral and pelvic fins as hydrofoils to maintain position on exposed rock surfaces where algal mats develop. Water is typically clear, cool, and well-oxygenated, with rocky substrates — boulders, cobbles, and flat bedrock — providing both grazing surface and shelter.
Specific water chemistry data for this species in the wild are not documented in the cached sources, but conditions in Andean rivers flowing from Colombia's western cordillera are generally soft to moderately hard, circumneutral to slightly acidic, and cool (approximately 64–75 °F at altitude, warmer in lower foothill reaches).
Feeding
Like other Chaetostoma, C. leucomelas is a periphyton and algae grazer. In fast-flowing rivers, it presses its broad, ventrally placed mouth against exposed rock surfaces and rasps the attached algal films, diatom mats, and associated organic detritus — the periphyton community that develops wherever light and current combine on hard substrates. The robust teeth and strong sucker-mouth anatomy allow efficient grazing even against significant water movement.
In the aquarium, the diet should be anchored in plant-based foods: high-quality algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and fresh vegetables such as blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and spinach. Some biofilm grazing from rocks and tank glass will occur naturally. Occasional small amounts of sinking meaty foods (e.g., sinking shrimp pellets) can be offered but are not a dietary priority. A diet overly rich in protein is not appropriate for this grazing catfish.
Mating
Courtship behaviour in Chaetostoma leucomelas has not been formally documented, but general observations of the genus indicate that males establish and defend territories around suitable spawning sites — flat rock surfaces or overhangs with moderate current, where eggs can be attached and oxygenated. The sexually dimorphic characters in males (broader head, large pelvic fins) are likely relevant to mate assessment and spawning-site competition.
Males are reported to be territorial with conspecifics, particularly other males, and adequate space and multiple shelters should be provided if more than one specimen is kept.
Breeding
PlanetCatfish records that Chaetostoma leucomelas spawns in shallow, fast-flowing water, depositing an adhesive clutch of eggs on the underside of a flat object — a flat stone, slate, or cave roof. The male, positioned upside down, guards the clutch by covering it with his body, a posture that also allows his pelvic fins to assist in water movement across the eggs.
This guarding behaviour — male attached to a substrate overhead, clutch beneath him — is characteristic of Chaetostoma and reflects the need to maintain egg oxygenation in the turbulent, high-oxygen environment these fish naturally occupy. Breeding in the aquarium requires replication of this environment: strong water movement, smooth flat stones or cave furnishings, and clean, well-oxygenated water.
Detailed aquarium breeding reports for this specific species are sparse; the genus is generally considered more challenging to breed in captivity than cave-spawning Ancistrus, partly due to its requirement for robust current and relatively cool temperatures.
In the aquarium
Chaetostoma leucomelas is an occasionally imported Colombian pleco that appeals to hobbyists seeking a larger, more robust rubber-nose species. Given a potential maximum size of around 5.5–8 in, it requires a more spacious aquarium than the small Chaetostoma commonly sold as 'rubber-lipped plecos' — a tank of at least 40–55 US gal is advisable for an adult.
The essential setup requirement is strong water movement. A powerful external filter, powerheads, or a spray bar directed along the base of the aquarium will help replicate the rheophilic conditions this fish needs. Substrate should include smooth, rounded cobbles and flat stones that can be colonised by algae and biofilm; pieces of flat slate angled to create sheltered undersides provide spawning surfaces if breeding is attempted.
Temperature should be kept on the cooler side of tropical: approximately 68–77 °F is appropriate, with higher temperatures causing stress over time. Water quality must be excellent — Chaetostoma are sensitive to accumulated waste, and heavy weekly water changes are recommended.
This species is reported to be relatively peaceful toward other fish but may show territorial behaviour toward conspecifics or other plecos competing for prime grazing positions. Tankmates should be robust, current-tolerant species that share the rheophilic preference — hillstream loaches, gobies adapted to current, and robust barbs are good candidates.
Conservation
Chaetostoma leucomelas was assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern on 6 October 2014. The species occurs across two river systems in Colombia — the Pacific-draining Río Patía and the Caribbean-draining Magdalena-Cauca — giving it a broader range than many Chaetostoma. No major threats were identified at the time of assessment, and the wide distribution was considered sufficient to buffer against localised habitat degradation.
The montane rivers of Colombia face ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and water abstraction, which can increase sedimentation and reduce the clear-water, rocky-substrate conditions on which rheophilic species like Chaetostoma depend. As an Andean foothill species occurring in two separate drainage basins, C. leucomelas may be relatively resilient, but localised populations in degraded catchments are likely vulnerable.
