Taxonomy & naming
Chaetostoma marmorescens was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and William Ray Allen in 1942, in their monograph on the fishes of western South America. The type material includes syntypes collected from Huanacachupa Creek near Huánuco, and from the Tingo area, at elevations around 1,2723 ft (approximately 6,000 ft) in the río Huallaga drainage of central Peru. Additional specimens forming part of the original series were taken from río Rondos and the rivers near Tingo María.
The species belongs to the genus Chaetostoma within subfamily Hypostominae (Loricariidae). Chaetostoma is the dominant genus of loricariid suckermouth catfishes in Andean fast-water environments, and the Huallaga River basin has been identified as a centre of genus-level diversity, with at least seven Chaetostoma species known from that drainage alone.
The specific epithet marmorescens derives from the Latin marmoreus (marble-like) with a participial suffix, alluding to the mottled or marbled body patterning typical of the species. No L-number has been assigned.
Morphology
Chaetostoma marmorescens reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 5.5 in SL (FishBase; Eigenmann & Allen, 1942). Secondary sources list an approximate total length of around 6 in, consistent with the ratio between SL and TL typical in Chaetostoma.
The body is strongly depressed and dorsoventrally flattened — the hallmark morphology of a loricariid specialised for life in fast-flowing rocky streams. Bony scutes cover the dorsal and lateral surfaces, providing both protection and purchase on current-swept rock. The suckermouth is broad and ventrally positioned, armed with numerous fine odontodes adapted for scraping periphyton.
Coloration, as suggested by the specific epithet, is a marbled or mottled pattern — dark brown or grey tones overlaid with irregular lighter marks giving a marble-like appearance. This cryptic patterning blends with the algae-encrusted rock surfaces of the species' natural habitat. Syntype specimens ranged from 1–2 in SL at collection, indicating that the species was represented across a range of size classes in the original type series.
Sexual dimorphism has not been formally characterised for this species in the available literature.
Habitat
Chaetostoma marmorescens is known from the upper Huallaga River basin within the broader Marañón River drainage of central Peru. The type localities — Huanacachupa Creek near Huánuco and the Tingo María area — sit in the eastern Andean montane zone at approximately 1,2625 ft elevation. Additional material has been recorded from the río Monzón drainage within the same basin.
At these elevations, streams are characteristically cold to cool, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated, and clarity-rich. The riverbed substrate is dominated by exposed rock, cobble, and boulder — surfaces that support the periphyton and biofilm communities on which Chaetostoma feeds. Current velocities in headwater streams of this type are considerable, and the strongly depressed body of Chaetostoma is an adaptation for maintaining position against the flow.
The Huallaga basin is one of the most species-rich drainages for this genus anywhere in the Andes, suggesting that local ecological conditions have favoured the diversification of these rheophilic suckermouth catfishes over geological time.
Feeding
Chaetostoma marmorescens is a periphyton grazer, scraping algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and associated biofilm from rock surfaces using its broad, muscular suckermouth. This feeding mode is shared across the genus and is tightly coupled to the fast-water habitat: high current velocities promote algal growth on exposed rock surfaces by delivering nutrients and preventing sediment smothering, and the species' flattened body and sucker allow it to feed on current-exposed surfaces where few other fish can maintain position.
No specific dietary data beyond the genus-level feeding guild have been published for this species. In aquarium settings, Chaetostoma are known to accept algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking foods, and blanched vegetables, with periphyton and algae grazing from tank surfaces supplementing the provided diet.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been observed or documented specifically for Chaetostoma marmorescens. No captive breeding reports are available in the literature or hobbyist databases.
By analogy with other Chaetostoma and with loricariids more broadly, males are expected to defend crevice or cavity sites in rocky fast-water habitat during the reproductive season, with courtship involving territorial display and, in some species, production of sounds or vibrations. The interopercular odontodes present in Chaetostoma males may play a role in male-male competition or mate assessment, as documented in related genera.
Breeding
No breeding records for Chaetostoma marmorescens in captivity or in the wild have been published. The species is not present in the ornamental trade and has not been maintained in aquaria by hobbyists to any reported degree.
FishBase notes that 'no recent work' has been conducted on this species — a statement that encapsulates the degree of post-description neglect it has received. Given the Vulnerable status and the environmental pressures documented in the Huallaga basin, basic biological information including reproductive parameters remains entirely undocumented, representing a significant gap in knowledge.
In the aquarium
Chaetostoma marmorescens is not available in the ornamental trade and should not be expected in standard hobbyist channels. The Welsfans Loricariidae database lists a minimum tank size of 39.5 in for this species — appropriate for a fish reaching around 6 in TL.
Should specimens become available through specialist sources, care would follow the general Chaetostoma framework: strong water movement replicating Andean stream conditions, a rocky scape with surfaces for algal growth, cool to moderate temperatures consistent with high-altitude origin (~1,2625 ft), and a diet centred on algae wafers and plant matter. Elevated water temperatures typical of tropical community tanks would likely be stressful for a species from Andean headwaters.
Conservation
Chaetostoma marmorescens is listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 23 April 2014. This is the most significant conservation status of the three species covered here and warrants careful attention.
The Vulnerable designation reflects the species' restricted range in the upper Huallaga headwaters and the suite of documented threats facing the Huallaga basin. Research into related Chaetostoma species from the same drainage has identified three principal pressures: dam construction, which alters hydrology and destroys fast-water habitat on which rheophilic species depend; mining operations that introduce heavy metals, sediment, and pollutants into streams; and erosion resulting from illegal crop cultivation on steep slopes, which degrades riparian vegetation and smothers rocky stream substrates with sediment — directly impacting the periphyton communities on which Chaetostoma feed.
The absence of any assessment update since 2014, combined with FishBase's note that 'no recent work' has been done on the species, suggests that the scientific community lacks current population data. Given continued development pressure in the Huallaga valley — one of Peru's most impacted high-Andean drainages — reassessment of this species is overdue. Conservation of the headwater streams where C. marmorescens occurs, through protection of riparian forest and regulation of mining and agricultural runoff, would be the most direct intervention available.
