A small, snow-white-named rubber-nose pleco restricted to the clear rivers of Colombia's Pacific slope, Chaetostoma niveum is one of the lesser-known members of a diverse Andean genus — a fast-water aufwuchs grazer whose narrow endemic range and sparse aquarium records make it more a species for the collector's record than the community tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Chaetostoma niveum was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1944 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 96, pages 238, figures 14–16). The type locality is the clear waters of the Río Jurubidá at Nuquí, on the Pacific slope of Colombia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Chaetostoma niveum Fowler, 1944 as the valid name; no synonyms are listed.

The genus Chaetostoma belongs to the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae within Loricariidae, the armoured suckermouth catfishes. Its members are distinguished from the closely related Ancistrus by the complete absence of fleshy tentacles on the snout, by lacking plates on the snout margin, and by the absence of abdominal plates. Interopercular odontodes are present. The genus as a whole is adapted to fast, oxygen-rich Andean and Pacific-slope rivers.

The genus name Chaetostoma derives from the Greek chaite (hair or bristle) and stoma (mouth), a reference to the numerous small teeth arranged around the oral disc. The species epithet niveum is Latin for 'snow-white', most likely alluding to pale or whitish coloration noted in the specimens Fowler examined — a characteristic that may be more or less distinct depending on preservation state or life coloration.

Morphology

Chaetostoma niveum is a small species, reaching approximately 3.5 in standard length (SL). Body form follows the typical Chaetostoma pattern: strongly depressed, broadest across the head, narrowing toward the caudal peduncle, with a flat venter adapted to clinging to rocks in current. The dorsal and lateral surfaces are armoured with bony scutes; the belly is unplated.

The mouth is ventral and broadly arched, bordered by fleshy lips forming a suction disc. Numerous fine bicuspid teeth line the oral arc, suited for rasping algae and biofilm from hard substrates. The pectoral spines are robust — a characteristic of rheophilic loricariids that must brace against current.

Sexual dimorphism follows genus-wide patterns: males develop a larger, broader head relative to body size, a slimmer ventral profile, and disproportionately enlarged pelvic fins thought to assist fertilisation in fast-flowing water. Beyond these points the morphological data available in consulted sources is sparse; detailed published morphometrics for this species are limited.

Habitat

Chaetostoma niveum is known only from the Río Jurubidá drainage on the Pacific slope of Colombia, a narrow, high-rainfall coastal system draining the western Andes into the Pacific Ocean near Nuquí (Chocó Department). The type locality was described as clear water — consistent with the clean, fast, well-oxygenated streams that Chaetostoma species occupy across their range.

Pacific-slope Colombian rivers in this region are short, steep, and fast-flowing, with cobble and boulder substrates and near-saturation dissolved oxygen. Seasonal rainfall in the Chocó bioregion is among the highest in the world, and river levels fluctuate considerably with wet and dry periods. No quantitative water chemistry data for this specific drainage or species are available in the sources consulted.

Feeding

Like all Chaetostoma, C. niveum is an aufwuchs and algae grazer in the wild, using the broad sucker mouth to rasp the biofilm of diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, and associated micro-invertebrates from hard rock and cobble surfaces. This type of feeding is highly adapted to the stable, sun-lit rocky surfaces of fast Andean and Pacific-slope rivers.

No species-specific feeding data are available from field studies or captive reports. In the aquarium, the species can be expected to behave as other small Chaetostoma: grazing algae from glass and hard surfaces, accepting sinking algae wafers and spirulina-based foods, and benefiting from blanched vegetables. A largely vegetable-based diet is appropriate.

Mating

No mating observations specific to C. niveum have been recorded in the sources consulted. Genus-level biology indicates that males defend rock crevice territories and use interopercular odontodes in contests with rivals. The enlarged pelvic fins seen in male Chaetostoma are hypothesised to assist sperm delivery in the high-current conditions where this genus spawns, by cupping over the egg clutch during fertilisation.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Chaetostoma niveum have been reported in the sources consulted. Based on genus-level biology, breeding is expected to involve adhesive eggs deposited on the underside of a flat rock or within a crevice in fast-flowing water, with the male remaining upside-down to guard and fan the clutch.

Given the species' narrow endemic range and limited presence in the hobby — no registered keepers or spotters are on record — captive breeding has not been documented. Aquarists attempting to work with this species should treat all husbandry details as extrapolated from congeners.

In the aquarium

Chaetostoma niveum is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. No registered keeper or spotter records exist for this species, and no captive breeding or husbandry accounts have been published. Its narrow endemic range on the Colombian Pacific coast means it is rarely if ever encountered in commercial fish exports.

For aquarists who do obtain specimens — likely as bycatch in Colombian catfish shipments — care should follow the principles established for small Chaetostoma more broadly: strong filtration and surface agitation to ensure high dissolved oxygen, a water temperature appropriate for a tropical Pacific-slope river, smooth river cobbles and flat stones as substrate and resting sites, and a primarily vegetable-based diet. Tank size appropriate for a 3.5 in loricariid is modest (25–40 US gal is a reasonable minimum), but water quality and flow are more important than raw volume. Specific water parameter preferences are not known from field or captive data.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Chaetostoma niveum as Least Concern in October 2014 (coordinated by Sonia Fisch-Müller), noting that no major threats were documented at the time of assessment. However, the species is endemic to a single drainage system — the Río Jurubidá on the Pacific slope of Colombia — which inherently limits its resilience to localised threats.

The Chocó bioregion, while one of the most biodiverse and rainfall-rich areas in the Americas, faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and mining. Any significant degradation of the Jurubidá watershed's water clarity or channel structure could disproportionately affect a species with no known alternative range. The 2014 assessment is now more than a decade old; given the pace of environmental change in the Colombian Pacific, reassessment with updated survey data would be valuable.
