Taxonomy & naming
Chaetostoma orientale was described in 2022 by Vidal Meza-Vargas, Marcelo Calegari, Nathan K. Lujan, Julian Andres Ballen, Osvaldo T. Oyakawa, Luciano F. de Sousa, Lúcia H. Rapp Py-Daniel, and Roberto E. Reis, in Ichthyology & Herpetology 110(2): 364–377, under the title "A New Species of Chaetostoma (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) Expands the Distribution of Rubbernose Plecos Eastward into the Lower Amazon Basin of Brazil." The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognizes it as a valid species and the type genus authority.
The epithet orientale is Latin for "eastern," a direct reference to the paper's headline finding: every other Chaetostoma species then known came from the Andes, the Orinoco basin, or the upper/western Amazon, and C. orientale is the easternmost representative of the genus on record, discovered in Guiana Shield drainages of the lower Amazon rather than anywhere near the mountains. The description also revised the phylogeny of the Chaetostoma anale species group, the informal cluster to which C. orientale belongs based on a shared modified anal-fin ray.
In the aquarium hobby the species circulates under the L-number L413 (and specimens matching the same distinctive coloration have also been traded as L416); L-numbers were assigned to wild-caught rubbernose plecos years before formal description gave the fish a scientific name, which is typical for Chaetostoma — a genus where the trade name usually arrives well ahead of the taxonomy.
Morphology
The holotype (MCP 54585, a mature male) measures 5 in standard length, and the type series indicates the species tops out at roughly this size — modest for the genus, which ranges from dwarf rheophiles under 4 in SL to robust species approaching 8 in SL. Like all Chaetostoma, C. orientale has the genus's signature fleshy, bristled snout (the source of the "rubbernose" name), a depressed, heavily plated body, and a ventral sucker-mouth adapted for clinging to rock in current.
The original description diagnoses C. orientale by an enlarged second unbranched anal-fin ray bearing posterior paired dermal flaps in mature males — the character that places it in the Chaetostoma anale group. Within that group, and specifically among the only other Chaetostoma known from the Guiana Shield (C. jegui and C. vasquezi), C. orientale is distinguished by a smaller opercle and an undeveloped supraoccipital excrescence (crest) even in adult males, where its Guiana Shield relatives develop a more pronounced bony ridge on the skull roof.
Sexual dimorphism follows the typical Chaetostoma pattern: mature males carry the enlarged, flap-bearing anal-fin ray used diagnostically above, plus the genus-typical cheek odontodes (bristle-like hooked spines) that thicken and lengthen with maturity, most visibly in breeding males. Females lack the enlarged anal ray and generally show more modest cheek odontode development.
Habitat
Chaetostoma orientale is known from the rio Maicuru — a northern (left-bank) tributary that enters the Amazon mainstem from the Guiana Shield — and the rio Seiko, a tributary of the lower rio Xingu, both in Pará State, Brazil. These are shield-fed rivers: clear, mineral-poor water running off ancient Precambrian rock, characterized by rapids, cataracts, and boulder-and-cobble stream beds rather than the whitewater or blackwater floodplain habitats more typical of the Amazon lowlands.
As with essentially every Chaetostoma, the genus is a rheophile — restricted to flowing, well-oxygenated water over hard substrate, not still or silty habitat. The description does not report measured water chemistry (temperature, pH, conductivity) for the type localities; shield-drainage rivers in this part of Pará typically run soft and slightly acidic to circumneutral, but no site-specific figures have been published for C. orientale, so none are asserted here.
The discovery is notable precisely because it extends the genus's known range far to the east of its previously documented Andean, Orinoco, and western/upper Amazon strongholds, into Guiana Shield rivers draining toward the lower Amazon — a biogeographic gap the original authors highlight as unexpected.
Feeding
No dietary study specific to Chaetostoma orientale has been published. By analogy with the genus as a whole — and consistent with its ventral sucker-mouth and rheophilic, hard-substrate habitat — C. orientale almost certainly grazes periphyton: the algae, diatoms, and biofilm layer ('aufwuchs') that coats submerged rock in fast, sunlit, well-oxygenated streams. Chaetostoma species use fine, spoon-shaped teeth to rasp this film from stone rather than to browse on wood or soft vegetation, distinguishing their feeding ecology from wood-scraping loricariids such as Panaque or Panaqolus.
Gut-content or stable-isotope data that would confirm the balance of algae versus associated invertebrate material in the diet of C. orientale specifically have not been published. Data sparse.
Mating
No field or captive observations of courtship or spawning behavior have been published for Chaetostoma orientale. The presence of an enlarged, dermal-flap-bearing anal-fin ray and enlarged cheek odontodes in mature males — both structures typical of rheophilic loricariid mating systems used in male-male contests and cave-entrance defense — implies a breeding system broadly like that documented in better-studied Chaetostoma and related Hypostominae: males defend a rock crevice or cavity against rivals and court females to spawn inside it. This is inference by analogy with the genus, not a direct observation of C. orientale. Data sparse.
Breeding
Chaetostoma orientale has not been bred in captivity, and no clutch size, incubation period, or fry-rearing data exist for the species. By analogy with other Chaetostoma and with cave-spawning Hypostominae generally, reproduction likely follows the pattern of egg-laying inside a rock crevice or excavated cavity, with the male guarding and fanning the clutch until the fry become free-swimming — but no aquarium breeding reports or field nest observations specific to C. orientale have been published. In the aquarium
Chaetostoma orientale is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade under its scientific name; its L-number designation (L413, with L416 also associated with the same distinctive color form) indicates it has been exported at least occasionally as part of the general rubbernose/bulldog pleco trade out of Brazil, but detailed husbandry accounts specific to this species have not been published.
What can be said honestly follows directly from the genus and the species' known habitat: Chaetostoma are cool-to-moderate-temperature, high-oxygen rheophiles from clear, fast Andean and shield rivers, and they consistently do poorly in the warm, still, low-flow conditions that suit many other South American plecos. Aquarists who succeed with rubbernose plecos generally provide strong current (powerheads or high-turnover filtration), cooler water than a typical tropical community tank (often mid-to-high teens through low-20s °C for genuinely Andean species; shield-river species such as this one may tolerate slightly warmer conditions but data are lacking), very high dissolved oxygen, and smooth rounded river-stone substrate rather than driftwood. A well-established algae/biofilm supply on hardscape is important since the fish grazes it continuously; supplemental blanched vegetables and algae-based sinking foods are commonly offered by keepers of the genus. Given the total absence of species-specific husbandry data for C. orientale, none of the above should be read as tested parameters for this species — it is a reasonable, honest extrapolation from its relatives and its known wild habitat, not a verified aquarium record.
Conservation
Chaetostoma orientale has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (status: Not Evaluated) — unsurprising for a species described only in 2022 and known from a small number of collecting sites in the rio Maicuru and rio Seiko. No population trend, abundance estimate, or formal threat assessment has been published.
The rivers it inhabits — Guiana Shield tributaries of the lower Amazon and lower Xingu — sit in a region of Brazil under ongoing pressure from mining, deforestation, and hydroelectric development, threats that generically affect rheophilic, hard-substrate specialists by altering flow regimes and siltation even where a specific study of this species has not been conducted. In the absence of a targeted assessment, its conservation status should be treated as data-deficient in practice, even though it has not been formally reviewed under the DD category.
