A high-altitude rubber-nose pleco from the Pacific slope of southwestern Colombia, Chaetostoma patiae inhabits the swift, oxygen-saturated tributaries of the Río Patía at elevations approaching 900 metres — water that is cold, clear, and in near-constant motion. In the aquarium its demands reflect that origin: brisk flow, pristine water quality, and the grazing surfaces of smooth rounded stones replicate the boulder riffles it calls home.

Taxonomy & naming

Chaetostoma patiae was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1945 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 97, pages 118, figures 25–28). The type locality is the Río Patía on the Pacific slope of southwestern Colombia, at an elevation of approximately 3,000 feet (roughly 2953 ft). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Chaetostoma patiae Fowler, 1945 as the valid combination.

The genus Chaetostoma belongs to the tribe Chaetostomini within subfamily Hypostominae, one of the five major subfamilial groupings of the family Loricariidae. Chaetostomini species are collectively known as rubber-nose or rubbernose plecos — a reference to the fleshy, flexible snout that allows them to grip smooth, fast-moving boulder surfaces while feeding. The genus is large and diverse, distributed across Pacific-slope and Andean rivers from Ecuador through Colombia and into Venezuela.

Chaetostoma patiae is diagnosed by the interopercular odontodes characteristic of the genus, the absence of abdominal plates, the absence of snout-edge plates, and the lack of fleshy tentacles — the last character distinguishing it immediately from the superficially similar Ancistrus. Its isolation on the Pacific slope rather than the Atlantic-draining Orinoco or Amazon systems makes it one of a smaller group of Pacific-coast Chaetostoma.

Morphology

Adults of Chaetostoma patiae reach approximately 6 in standard length (SL), making it a mid-sized member of its genus — larger than many of the 'dwarf' rubber-nose species but not as bulky as some large Andean Chaetostoma. The body follows the typical loricariid armour-plated form: broad and flattened ventrally, with overlapping bony scutes covering the flanks and dorsum. The head is wide and depressed, with the ventrally placed suckermouth surrounded by fleshy tissue that acts as a pad for adhesion to current-swept rock surfaces.

The snout is broad and somewhat mobile, a hallmark of rheophilic algae-grazing loricariids. Odontodes — small, hook-like spines — are present on the interopercular region; these are especially prominent in males. Coloration in the genus is typically a mottled or reticulated brown-and-cream pattern that provides excellent camouflage against algae-covered cobble.

Sexual dimorphism follows the broader Chaetostoma pattern: males are typically larger and broader-headed, with a slimmer ventral profile, and develop disproportionately large pelvic fins. This pelvic fin enlargement is understood functionally — when a male inverts over a spawned egg clutch in fast current, the oversized fins help prevent sperm dispersal before fertilisation can occur. Females tend to be broader-bodied in the mid-section when viewed from above.

Habitat

Chaetostoma patiae is endemic to the Río Patía basin, a major Pacific-draining river system of southwestern Colombia. The type locality sits at roughly 2953 ft elevation on the Pacific slope — upland, swift, and cool compared with the lowland Amazonian rivers more familiar to the ornamental trade. At such altitude, water temperatures are lower than typical tropical averages, and the broken riffles and cascades maintain dissolved oxygen at near-saturation levels throughout the day.

The microhabitat is almost certainly cobble and boulder riffles where epilithic algae (periphyton) coats rock surfaces continuously irrigated by current. This is the defining ecological niche of the rubbernose plecos: the suckermouth and flexible snout allow them to maintain adhesion to smooth, fast-moving surfaces inaccessible to most other benthic fish, while the scraping dentition harvests the biofilm efficiently.

The Pacific slope of southwestern Colombia receives heavy orographic rainfall from Pacific weather systems and maintains relatively stable high flows compared with more seasonal Andean systems. The isolation of the Patía drainage from Atlantic-slope river systems contributes to the species' range restriction and its low connectivity with congeners in the Amazon and Orinoco basins.

Feeding

Like all Chaetostoma, C. patiae is a rheophilic periphyton grazer — an algae and biofilm specialist adapted to foraging on the surfaces of current-swept rocks. The scraping teeth are well-suited to harvesting epilithic algae (diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria) along with associated invertebrates and organic detritus that accumulate in the biofilm matrix. In the wild this diet is continuous: the fish graze for much of the day and night, rasping across boulder and cobble surfaces.

In the aquarium, the primary diet should be algae-based: algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and the natural algae growth encouraged by moderate-to-high lighting on the tank glass and rocks. Supplementary vegetable matter — blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and spinach — is accepted. Unlike the wood-eating Panaqolus and Panaque, Chaetostoma species do not require driftwood as a dietary component, though smooth stones are an important grazing and resting surface. Occasional invertebrate-based treats (small live or frozen foods) can supplement the diet but should not dominate it.

Mating

Courtship behaviour in Chaetostoma follows the general pattern documented for the genus. Males establish territories around favoured spawning surfaces — typically the underside of a flat, stable rock or slate — and compete for access to females by displaying their interopercular odontodes and physically contesting territory boundaries. The oversized pelvic fins of males play a direct role in reproduction: when the male inverts to fertilise the adhesive egg clutch deposited on the underside of a stone, the enlarged pelvic fins form a partial seal over the clutch, reducing sperm dispersal in the fast current.

Conditioning adults for spawning in captivity requires replicating the flowing, oxygen-rich, moderately cool conditions of their Andean origin. There are no published breeding reports for C. patiae specifically on PlanetCatfish, and captive breeding of this species remains rarely documented.

Breeding

Chaetostoma patiae is presumed to share the breeding mode documented for the genus: cave or crevice spawning on the underside of flat objects in fast-moving water, with paternal brood care. The male inverts and guards the adhesive egg clutch, covering it with his body and using fin movements to maintain water flow over the eggs. After hatching, the male continues to guard fry until they disperse and begin feeding independently.

In the aquarium, well-rounded flat stones stacked to form natural crevices — replicating the boulder riffles of the Patía drainage — provide suitable spawning structure. Strong directional flow from a powerhead directed across the spawning site helps trigger and sustain breeding behaviour. The scarcity of documented aquarium spawnings reflects both the species' restricted availability in the trade and the specialised flow-and-oxygen requirements of its upland Andean origin.

In the aquarium

Chaetostoma patiae is an infrequently available species in the ornamental trade, reflecting its restricted Pacific-slope range and limited export from Colombia compared with Atlantic-drainage species. Hobbyists who obtain it must be prepared to meet its rheophilic requirements: this is not a tolerant, adaptable fish but a specialist of clean, fast, oxygen-saturated water.

Aquarium setup should prioritise water movement above almost all else. A rated turnover of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour — delivered by one or more powerheads or a strong canister return — is the starting point. The tank should be furnished with smooth rounded stones arranged to form resting places, grazing surfaces, and sheltered crevices, replicating the boulder riffles of the Patía. Substrate can be fine gravel or coarser cobble; open sand areas are acceptable but not the primary habitat feature.

Water temperature should be kept cooler than for most Neotropical fish: the high-altitude origin suggests 68–75 °F as a comfortable range, with 79 °F as an upper ceiling during warmer months. Dissolved oxygen must be high; if surface agitation is limited, an airstone or venturi fitting on the powerhead will help. Water quality must be excellent — elevated nitrate and phosphate will suppress immune function and algae quality simultaneously. Weekly partial water changes of 25–30% are advisable.

Plants are possible in a C. patiae aquarium if species tolerant of strong flow are chosen (Anubias, Bolbitis, Microsorum). Tankmates should be selected from species tolerant of the same cool, fast-water conditions — hillstream loaches, Sewellia, Gastromyzon, and cool-water tetras or barbs are more compatible than typical tropical community fish. The species is peaceful toward dissimilar fish but may show low-level territorial behaviour toward conspecifics; multiple flat-stone territories help reduce conflict.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Chaetostoma patiae as Least Concern (LC) in October 2014, noting no identified major threats at the time of assessment. The Río Patía basin on the Pacific slope of southwestern Colombia is geographically isolated from the large-scale ornamental trade networks centred on the Amazon and Orinoco, which likely reduces collection pressure compared with many other loricariids.

Nonetheless, the species' restricted range within a single Pacific-slope drainage system means that localised threats — watershed deforestation, sedimentation from agricultural expansion, or water extraction from upland tributaries — could have disproportionate effects on populations. The southwestern Pacific slope of Colombia has experienced significant habitat modification in parts of the Patía catchment. The 2014 IUCN assessment did not trigger a threatened listing, but the combination of a restricted range and a single-basin distribution warrants periodic reassessment as land-use pressures on the Colombian Pacific slope evolve.
