One of the earlier-described members of its genus, Chaetostoma paucispinis is a compact, rheophilic algae grazer endemic to the Pacific-slope rivers of Colombia's Chocó biogeographic region — a fish whose name speaks directly to the two interopercular spines that set it apart from related species.

Taxonomy & naming

Chaetostoma paucispinis was formally described by Charles Tate Regan in 1912, making it one of the earlier-established members of a genus that now encompasses approximately 51 valid species. The type locality is Río San Juan near Tadó, in Chocó Department, Colombia — a Pacific-drainage river on the western slope of the Andes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Chaetostoma paucispinis Regan, 1912.

The genus Chaetostoma, established in the nineteenth century, takes its name from the Greek chaite (hair or bristle) and stoma (mouth), alluding to the prominent interopercular odontodes — stiff, hair-like spines projecting from the cheek area — that give these fish their rubbernose or bristle-nose colloquial identity. The species epithet paucispinis is Latin: pauci meaning few, and spina meaning spine or thorn. The name directly describes the key diagnostic character — the possession of only two interopercular spines, fewer than in most related congeners. This kind of direct anatomical naming was characteristic of Regan's descriptive work.

The species is endemic to Colombia and is the only Chaetostoma representative confirmed from the San Juan River system. References include Fisch-Muller (2003) in the Loricariidae-Ancistrinae revision and earlier work by Regan.

Morphology

Chaetostoma paucispinis reaches a maximum recorded length of 3.5 in TL (total length) in the FishBase record. Like all Chaetostoma, it has the flattened, depressed body form of a fish adapted to life in fast-flowing rivers: a broad, rounded snout, a ventrally placed suctorial mouth, and a body encased in rows of bony scutes that provide protection without sacrificing the low profile needed to resist strong current.

The diagnostic character is the interopercular spine count: just two interopercular spines (odontodes) on each side, in contrast to the higher counts found in most congeners. In the genus Chaetostoma, these spines are displayed during male-male interactions and develop more prominently in adult males. The reduced spine count in paucispinis was sufficient for Regan to recognise it as a distinct species within the suite of Colombian Chaetostoma he examined.

Colour in life and pattern details are not available from secondary literature examined here; the original 1912 description would contain the full diagnostic comparison. Body size at 3.5 in TL is typical of small- to mid-sized Chaetostoma and consistent with the compact build needed for navigating rocky Andean piedmont rivers.

Habitat

Chaetostoma paucispinis is endemic to the Río San Juan basin, Colombia, a Pacific-drainage river system in the Chocó biogeographic region. The Chocó is one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth, with exceptionally high levels of endemism driven by the Pacific versant's geographic isolation from the main Amazon drainage — the Andes act as a barrier separating Atlantic and Pacific ichthyofaunas, producing a distinct fish community on the western slope.

The Río San Juan and its tributaries in the Chocó foothill zone are characterised by fast-flowing, clean to slightly turbid water over cobble and bedrock, high rainfall year-round (the Chocó receives some of the highest precipitation totals on Earth), and well-oxygenated conditions. This is prototypical Chaetostoma habitat: rocks bearing periphyton growth, strong current, and variable water levels between wet and dry seasons, though the Chocó wet season is less extreme than in more markedly seasonal Andean systems.

No published water chemistry data specific to C. paucispinis collection sites have been located. Conditions in the upper Río San Juan near Tadó are expected to be soft to moderately hard, circumneutral to slightly acidic (pH approximately 6.5–7.2), with water temperatures cooler than Amazonian lowland rivers given the foothill elevation. These remain inferred parameters pending field measurements.

Feeding

Chaetostoma paucispinis is a rheophilic algae and periphyton grazer, consistent with all members of the genus. The ventral suctorial disc, reinforced by jaw musculature and the characteristic fine, multi-cusped teeth, is well suited to scraping the epilithic biofilm — diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, and associated organic material — that colonises the surfaces of rocks and boulders in fast-flowing Pacific-slope rivers.

The Chocó rivers offer productive algae growth on sun-exposed boulders even in high-rainfall conditions, given the generally clear water and warm temperatures at foothill elevations. Gut content studies on Chaetostoma from comparable Andean river systems consistently show a diet dominated by algae and detritus, with minor contributions from microinvertebrates and sediment ingested incidentally while scraping substrate. No dietary studies specific to C. paucispinis have been located.

Mating

No specific mating observations for Chaetostoma paucispinis have been published. The species is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade and has not been documented in captivity.

The diagnostic character of the species — the reduced interopercular spine count — is itself a feature linked to male secondary sexual signalling in Chaetostoma. The interopercular odontodes function in male-male competition, and males in breeding condition typically display these spines when confronting rivals or when approaching females. The reduced number in paucispinis does not necessarily imply reduced agonistic behaviour; the display value may be compensated by other morphological or behavioural cues. These remain open questions.

Breeding

No breeding data for Chaetostoma paucispinis have been published, and the species has not been documented as reproduced in captivity. Given the endemic, Data Deficient status of this fish and its restriction to a single Colombian river system, hobbyist records are essentially absent.

Chaetostoma in general are presumed crevice or rock-shelter spawners following the wider loricariid pattern — the male occupying and defending a rocky hollow or under-boulder space, guarding an adhesive egg clutch — but this remains extrapolated for C. paucispinis specifically.

In the aquarium

Chaetostoma paucispinis is not available in the ornamental trade and is unknown in hobby collections. Its Data Deficient IUCN status reflects the scarcity of field data rather than confirmed abundance, and the species should be considered potentially sensitive to collection pressure until better population data exist.

For reference, Chaetostoma from Pacific-slope Colombian rivers would be expected to thrive under conditions similar to hillstream or Andean loricariid setups: strong filtration with high oxygenation, cool to moderate temperatures (approximately 68–77 °F), smooth or cobble-like rocky substrate providing attachment surfaces and hiding spaces, and a diet anchored by algae and spirulina-rich wafers supplemented with blanched vegetables. The compact 3.5 in adult size would make the species manageable in a moderately sized aquarium if ever legitimately available.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Chaetostoma paucispinis as Data Deficient (DD), assessed on 7 October 2014. The DD listing reflects a genuine lack of population data rather than an absence of concern: the species is known from a restricted endemic range in the Río San Juan basin of Colombia, and insufficient survey effort has been conducted to determine whether populations are stable, declining, or numerically threatened.

The Chocó biogeographic region, while containing some of South America's most intact humid forest, faces ongoing pressures from mining activity (particularly gold and platinum extraction, which is widespread in the Chocó), deforestation, and agricultural encroachment. Fast-flowing rivers in the foothill zone are particularly vulnerable to sedimentation from placer mining, which can smother the rocky substrates on which Chaetostoma depend for both feeding and reproduction.

The Data Deficient assessment signals a priority for further field surveys to establish basic population parameters for this endemic. Given its restricted distribution and the acknowledged threats to Chocó river systems, an eventual reassessment with better data could yield a more precautionary listing.
