A compact rheophilic loricariid from the Maracaibo basin of Venezuela, Chaetostoma sovichthys belongs to the rubber-nose or rubberlip pleco group — small, armoured suckermouth catfishes built for life in the fast, oxygen-rich currents of Andean foothills streams, where they graze algae from wave-washed rock surfaces and deposit their eggs on the underside of flat stones.

Taxonomy & naming

Chaetostoma sovichthys was formally described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944, published in the Proceedings of the United States National Museum (volume 94, number 3172, page 292, Plate 8, figures A–B). The type locality is near the bridge over the Río San Pedro, a tributary of the Río Motatán southeast of Mene Grande, in the Maracaibo basin of Venezuela. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid species Chaetostoma sovichthys; the junior synonym Chaetostoma anomala sovichthys reflects an earlier treatment as a subspecies of C. anomala.

The genus Chaetostoma Block, 1900 is one of several loricariid genera collectively known in the hobby as rubber-nose or rubberlip plecos — small to medium suckermouth catfishes strongly adapted to high-gradient, fast-flowing Andean and sub-Andean rivers. Armbruster's (2004) work places Chaetostoma within the tribe Chaetostomini of subfamily Hypostominae. Ceas and Page (1996) provide diagnostic characters for the genus. A historical point of confusion exists in the literature: a PlanetCatfish image (image_id 21972) sourced from Galvis et al. (1997) was originally labelled C. tachiraense, suggesting possible past misidentification between the two Maracaibo-drainage Schultz 1944 species.

The genus name derives from the Greek chaite (hair, bristle) and stoma (mouth), alluding to the interopercular odontodes — spine-like bristles posterior to the gill cover — that are diagnostic for the genus. The species epithet sovichthys is not glossed in the sources consulted; it may be a Latinised compound from the collector's or locality name.

Morphology

Chaetostoma sovichthys is a small loricariid, reaching a maximum recorded size of 3 in standard length (SL). The body is dorsoventrally flattened and heavily armoured with bony scutes, with the ventral surface of the abdomen unplated — a diagnostic feature distinguishing Chaetostoma from related genera. The snout edge likewise lacks the odontode-bearing plates seen in some congeners such as Chaetostoma platyrhynchus.

The most distinctive external feature of the genus is the presence of interopercular odontodes: stiff, bristle-like spines located on the cheek region posterior to the gill cover. These are particularly developed in adult males and constitute one of the primary characters separating Chaetostoma from the superficially similar Ancistrus — Ancistrus bears fleshy tentacle-like appendages on the snout (particularly in males), whereas Chaetostoma has none.

Sexual dimorphism in C. sovichthys is consistent with the broader Chaetostoma pattern. Males develop a larger, broader head and carry proportionately larger pelvic fins than females — a functional adaptation, since males use the expanded pelvic fins to cover and stabilise the egg clutch during spawning in fast current. Females have a narrower head and slimmer ventral profile when not gravid.

Habitat

Chaetostoma sovichthys is endemic to the Maracaibo basin of northwestern Venezuela, occurring in the Motatán River and its tributaries draining into Lake Maracaibo. The Motatán rises in the Andes of Mérida and Trujillo states, descending through foothills and lowland plains before reaching the lake. The type locality near Mene Grande lies in the western piedmont zone of the basin.

All Chaetostoma are rheophilic by biology — obligate fast-water specialists whose entire morphology reflects adaptation to strong current. The flattened body, broad adhesive ventral disc formed by the expanded sucker mouth and lips, and unplated abdomen (which reduces suction disruption against rock surfaces) are adaptations for clinging to wave-swept substrates in riffle and rapid habitats. The micro-oxygenation of fast-flowing water is not merely preferred but likely essential: the high metabolic demands of a muscle-intensive, current-resistant lifestyle require consistently well-oxygenated water.

Substrate in natural habitat is predominantly rock — cobbles, boulders, and bedrock outcrops that develop thick biofilm and algal mats in the well-lit, turbulent conditions of Andean foothill streams. No detailed field chemistry data (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen) specific to H. sovichthys collection sites in the Motatán basin are available in the sources consulted, but the Maracaibo foothill streams generally carry soft to moderate-hardness water with neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and temperatures reflecting the tropical-to-subtropical elevation gradient.

Feeding

Chaetostoma sovichthys is an algae-grazing periphyton feeder, as expected for the genus. In the aquarium, chaetostomas are typically offered a diet of spirulina-based wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, peas), and algae tablets. Live algae growth on tank glass and décor is welcomed. Heavy protein foods should be limited; the genus is primarily herbivorous-to-algivorous in the wild, and excess protein can cause digestive issues.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour in Chaetostoma is tied closely to fast-flowing water, and C. sovichthys is presumed to follow the genus pattern. Males establish territories around suitable flat-rock spawning sites in areas of active current, and their disproportionately large pelvic fins — a distinctive dimorphic feature — serve a functional role during spawning: the male uses these fins to cover and stabilise the egg clutch in fast current, pressing against the underside of a flat stone to hold the adhesive eggs in place and maintain fertilisation contact.

The broader head and heavier build of males, combined with the prominent interopercular odontodes, are likely involved in male–male competition and display. Females in breeding condition are distinguishable from males by the narrower head, less developed interopercular odontodes, and (when gravid) a visibly fuller abdomen.

Breeding

Chaetostoma spawn in shallow, fast-flowing water on the underside of flat objects — flat rocks are the natural substrate, and in the aquarium a flat slate tile or smooth river stone in a high-flow zone replicates this. The egg clutch is adhesive and is deposited on the underside of the spawning surface. The male guards the clutch, pressed upside-down against the spawning substrate, using the enlarged pelvic fins to cover and ventilate the eggs while current provides additional oxygenation.

This upside-down egg-guarding posture, under flat surfaces in strong current, is characteristic of the genus and distinguishes Chaetostoma breeding from the burrow-based paternal care seen in many other loricariids. No breeding reports specific to Chaetostoma sovichthys in captivity are available in the sources consulted; the above reflects the documented genus-level breeding pattern drawn from PlanetCatfish's Chaetostoma notes.

In the aquarium

Chaetostoma sovichthys is not commonly kept in the aquarium hobby and does not appear in mainstream trade under its own name. The genus Chaetostoma as a whole — sometimes sold collectively as 'rubber-nose plecos' or 'bulldog plecos' — is occasionally available, though many specimens in trade are not identified to species level.

The fast-water specialisation of Chaetostoma makes strong, directed water movement the most critical husbandry parameter for any member of the genus. Powerheads or circulation pumps creating a robust current over a rocky substrate section are essential. Without adequate flow, Chaetostoma species show poor condition, respiratory stress, and reduced feeding activity. A tank of 20–30 US gal or more with a well-turned-over filter and additional circulation would suit a small group of this species.

Furnishings should replicate the rocky fast-water habitat: smooth river cobbles, flat slate pieces stacked to create current-swept surfaces and potential spawning sites. Driftwood and plants compatible with strong flow can be added for cover. The species requires well-oxygenated, clean water; efficient mechanical and biological filtration is important, and weekly partial water changes of 25–30% are advisable.

Specific water parameter data (temperature range, pH, hardness) for C. sovichthys are not available in the sources consulted. Agricultural expansion and deforestation in the Andean foothills zone of the Motatán catchment also affect water quality and sedimentation. For a small, fast-water specialist like C. sovichthys, sedimentation events that smother rock biofilm — its primary food source — can be locally damaging even when they do not qualify as basin-wide threats. The species' current Least Concern status may be reassessed as basin-level data improve.
